The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami and the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Danbatta  were today joined by other industry stakeholders to witness the 5G trial in Nigeria conducted by MTN Nigeria.

The trial, TechEconomy.ng gathered, was conducted at MTN Nigeria regional office in Abuja.

TechEconomy.ng reported in August 2019 that NCC had set tune for 5G trial in the country. This was announced by Prof. Umar who said that the Commission approved dedicated spectrum for trial deployment of Fifth Generation (5G) services in the country.

Danbatta disclosed this in an opening remarks at the 1st Digital African Week organised by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) hosted by the Commission at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

Similarly, the Director, Technical Standards and Network Integrity at NCC, Engineer Bako Wakil while delivering Prof. Danabatta’s speech at Mobile and Disruptive Technology Forum (#MoDiTECH2019) reaffirmed that the trial will go ahead.

He said that the 5G trial was necessitated by the Commission’s quest to understand the key attributes of the technology before approval can be granted.

Wakil said that the process was like a ‘Proof of Concept’ to be carried out by operators with the existing frequency and spectrum and all the major 5G system vendors in the country – Huawei, Nokia, Ericsson, ZTE – are involved in the test which would determine whether 5G is achievable on the country’s current network configuration.
