The Minister, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, FMST, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said over Nine Hundred thousand jobs (900,000) have been created through the implementation of STI policies of the Federal Government.

He further disclosed that over N1 Trillion has been saved through the reduction in imports of raw materials, in the year 2017 and 2018 according to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics.

Dr. Onu disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the Science, Technology and Innovation EXPO 2020 at Eagle Square in Abuja on Monday.

He said the Ministry is supporting young Nigerians to embrace STI, in his words, “We have started the process of identifying bright young Nigerians at Secondary school level in a programmed tagged 774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award (774 YONSPA). It is a grassroot mobilization programme of young Nigerians in all 774 Local Government Areas of our country.”

He said the Ministry is achieving success in diversifying the economy from resource and commodity based to one that is knowledge and innovation driven.

He urged Nigerians to be committed and work hard to ensure that this feat is attained.

On the current Covid-19 epidemic recorded in many parts of the world, Dr. Onu said Nigerians should intensify efforts to manufacture locally made goods and patronize made- in Nigeria products.

In his words “The Presidential Executive Order 5 and The National Strategy for Competitiveness in Raw Materials and Product Development in the country passed by the Federal Executive Council will help in realizing this noble objective”.
