Twitter users have gone into a frenzy after rumours of the popular video-sharing app, Tiktok being banned in the US surfaced online

On Friday, the hashtags #RIPTiktok and #Tiktokdown were trending for hours after users reported seeing strange features in the app sparking the rumours that the app is being banned in the US.

One user with the handle @KatStuartmusic tweeted “Tiktok is glitching… what the hailll we gon do now #riptiktok”

Another user @laithalishious tweeted a meme video with the caption “Tiktok influencers dropping one last video before the app is gone”

@nataliekara2 another user on Twitter said, “Me coming to twitter after seeing my views and likes on tik tok at 0 and finding out it’s banned #riptiktok #tiktokbanned”

The rumours about Tiktok being banned is not totally unfounded as there has always being a hate-love relationship between the US and the app. While many Americans love Tiktok and use it on a regular basis, American security advisers have always been wary of the app, claiming that it has privacy issues.

In January, branches of the US Military banned the app which has Chinese origins from government-issued smartphones, with the Pentagon warning that there was a  “potential risk associated with using the TikTok app” per New York Times.

Also, on Monday, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo told Fox News as reported by CNN that the US government was considering serious actions against Chinese-owned apps.

He said, “With respect to Chinese apps on people’s cellphones, I can assure you the United States will get this one right, too, Laura. I don’t want to get out in front of the President (Donald Trump), but it’s something we’re looking at.”

As at the time of filing this report, Techeconomy discovered that Tiktok was not yet banned in the US or elsewhere as the app is still available for download, but that fact is yet to quell the rumours.

The company has responded to the issue of the technical glitches being experienced on the app. With Tiktok Support Tweeting ““Hi TikTok community! We’re aware that some users are experiencing app issues – working to quickly fix things, and we’ll share updates here!”
