As SSDs have no moving parts, they are also more durable than traditional hard drives and are better protected against damage from drops and bumps.

Having no moving parts also means that SSDs receive less wear and tear, as there are no read or write heads for the drive media to come into contact with.

SSDs also help to deliver improved battery life and cooler operating temperatures. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

SSD with high capacity and enhanced reliability

If you have been searching for SSD that delivers high capacity with enhanced reliability, then, you have the right tool, a WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD uses Western Digital 3D NAND technology to achieve higher capacities than previous generation WD Blue SSDs and help reduce cell-to-cell interference for enhanced reliability.

Warranty

Every WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD comes with a limited 5-year warranty, so you can be confident of your storage when you upgrade or replace any of your drives. Although, the user-manual contains WD contacts for technical supports comes with no contact for Nigeria. Western Digital needs to look into that.

Let’s look at some questions you are likely going to ask:

Question: I’m interested in this SSD but I am not sure if it is compatible with my Minix Neo J50c-4. Now, tell me, are you able to confirm that it will be or not?

Answer:

When checking the Minix official compatible SSD list, the Western Digital isn’t listed however if you check the Minix forums it has been user tested and this model (WDS500G2B0B) has been successfully used.

You may need to contact the manufacturers (Minix) support to verify if you still have concerns but hope that helps with your query.

Question: I have an Asus laptop; will it work?

Answer: While you would need to check with ASUS for complete certainty, from what I can see this should be compatible with your laptop.

WD Blue 500GB 3D

WD Blue 500GB 3D

This uses a standard M.2 interface; the ASUS has such an adaptor; and it’s easy to find instructions on upgrading the M.2 SSD in your model of laptop.

Question: Okay, do I have to buy the connector separately?

Answer: In most cases no, your motherboard will bring a few SATA cables and the power adapter, that should also come with your power supply.

Meanwhile, you can just use the extra SSD as a storage drive, but if the newer SSD you are buying is faster, I would probably reinstall the operating system on the newest on.

If you are scared about that though, there are many YouTube videos that will help you not only to transfer the OS if you wanted to, but also to reinstall windows.

Windows tends to perform better if you reinstall.  Let me know which route you prefer to go and I can link a video for you.

Question: Very helpful, thanks. My WD 1Tb SSD has a big yellow sticker warning me it is electrostatically sensitive, suggesting I need to root out my electrostatic wrist strap and earth myself to the nearest radiator before touching it. I’m worrying how sensitive these SSDs really are.

Answer: Experts in this field would tell you to make sure before touching it, just touch the inside of your case which will discharge your ESD and take care of everything. Also, make sure you don’t have food or grease on your hands, just make sure everything is clean but you are good.

Question: I am worried, I just bought the SSD but doesn’t fit in the 2.5” drive bay, what do I do?

Answer: Don’t be worried. You can use some double sided tape and stick it where it fits.

Question: One of my problems is that the PSU Cable is preventing me from mounting the SSD from the case side. So my only option is to put it on a hard drive tray which only screws two sides of the SSD leaving it hanging.

Response: That is the great thing about SSD’s, since there are no moving parts, you can have them anywhere inside your machine basically, dangling if you want, though I would maybe double sided sticky tape the drive so that it does not get loose and fall, but you are good.

Question: Can I use whatever SATA Cable I have? I am asking because my motherboard only had 2 SATA Cables, I have another SATA cable; can I use that or something is going to happen?

Answer: Yes, you should have no problem.

Again, here are some specs of the SSD

Conclusion

This is a great device that gives you leverage to monitor your drive’s available capacity, operating temperatures, SMART attributes and more with the WD SSD Dashboard. Acronis True Image WD Edition software, available as a free download, can clone drives and backup your operating system, applications, settings and all of your data.

The problem I have here is the warranty. Western Digital needs to be specific if the 5-year warranty applies here (Nigeria) because on the pack you get this inscription – “Local Nigerian Warranty”.
