The enrolment of the diplomats started on Monday 18th January, 2021.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) in his bid to ensure seamless enrolment of all diplomats in the country for the purpose of the ongoing NIN-SIM linkage and other needs, directed the setting up of the enrolment center at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.
Explaining further in reasons for the mandatory NIN registration for members of the Diplomatic Corps, the Minister said, “The National Identity Number is mandatory for diplomats who will reside in Nigeria for a continuous period of two years or more”.
“It is also mandatory for all other lawful residents in the country as stated in Section 16 of the National Identity Management Commission Act 2007.
“The Law has made it mandatory for Nigerians and legal residents to obtain a NIN since 2007. However, compliance has been low, until recently.
“The Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy remains committed to creating an enabling environment for all Nigerians and legal residents to obtain their Digital Identity Number.
“Also, the NIMC wishes to assure members of the general public that all hands are on deck to ensure the enrolment of all Nigerians and legal residents into the National Identity Database”, the Head, Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, said
