The total number of active mobile telephony subscriptions in Nigeria: 204,601,313 as at December 2020, according to statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
This indicates a reduction by 3,306,396 active mobile telephony subscriptions compared to the 207,907,709 recorded in November 2020.
From the breakdown of the numbers, TechEconomy.ng understands that MTN remains its market dominance with 80,764,128 subscribers. Airtel is second with 55,642,209. Airtel is closely followed by Globacom on the third position with 54,840,192. 9Mobile remains fourth with 12,982,149.
Going by these figures, MTN accounts for 39.55% of active telephony subscription in the country as at December 2020; Airtel is second with 27.25% market share followed by Globacom with 26.85% while 9Mobile has 6.36% market share.
Active Internet Subscription
Nigeria’s active Internet subscriptions stood at 154,301,195 as at December 2020.
The figure is lower than 154,878,203 recorded in November 2020.
TechEconomy.ng also gathered that GSM accounts for 153,873,786; fixed wired: 11,468 and VoIP: 415,941.
Also, during the period under review, Nigeria’s broadband penetration slowed by 0.058.
But, the country’s Year-on-Year (YoY) broadband penetration between December 2019 (30.80%) and December 2020 (45.02%) stands at 7.22%.
By implication, Nigeria’s record internet penetration was in October 2020 when it peaked at 45.93%.
TechEconomy.ng had reported that the country’s broadband access-gap clusters have also reduced from 207 to 114.
