NIPOST reclaims Stamp Duty collection mandate from FIRS

. As FG unveils 60th anniversary commemorative stamps

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has again regained the mandate to collect Stamp Duty in the country. had reported in its January 3, 2020 edition about the lamentation of the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali-Pantami, said that moves by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, to start collecting stamp duty simply implies usurping NIPOST’s responsibility as contained in its establishing Act.

Flip to today, March 11, 2021 the Minister said that the newly signed Financial Act of 2020 has addressed the issue as NIPOST now has its mandate back to collect stamp duties.

Aside that, the Digital Economy sector has recorded another milestone as Dr Pantami today unveiled the Diamond anniversary commemorative postage stamps in Abuja.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Minister noted that the significance of the stamps are deeply rooted in our national history as an independent nation.

“The stamps bring to life, our founding fathers and the roles they played birthing our independence from our colonial masters. This set of stamps illustrates the fact that we can achieve greater success, when we are united, regardless of our diverse ethno-cultural and religious differences. Furthermore, these stamps are to be used in authenticating and validating our official documents”

Dr Pantami further noted that in spite of the enormous challenges bedevilling the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), the federal government is committed to repositioning the organisation to attain its maximum potential in adding value to the economy.

To this end, Dr Pantami has championed and established the recognition of NIPOST as the legal producer of stamp duties through the Finance Act of 2020, a move which strategically empowers the institution to generate revenue.

The minister expressed his gratitude to the National Assembly particularly, the relevant committees for their unflinching support in the journey so far and reiterated his commitment in taking NIPOST to unprecedented heights.

Recall that NIPOST is one of the institutions under the purview of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.
