A recent report indicates that only 24% of technical roles worldwide are filled by women and the number of women with technical training is declining.
Also consider this fact: while digital skills are a known enabler for empowerment, freedom and equal access to the labour market, more than half of all women worldwide (52%) still have no internet access compared to 42% of men.
Therefore, it has become imperative to face head on inequality and promote more inclusive technology and this requires more proactive measures by stakeholders including the government, private organisations and advocacy groups.
The President, Nigerian Women In Information Technology (NIWIIT), Bamidele Bayo-Osibo (Mrs.), in a chat with TechEconomy.ng, said that the aforementioned informed the choice of theme for the forthcoming sixth National Conference of NIWIIT which is “Promoting Digital Inclusion: Harnessing Opportunities With A Gender Lens”.
The hybrid (physical and Virtual) two-day conference holds on Wednesday, June 2 and Thursday, June 3, 2021 at the National Centre for Women Development, Tafawa Balewa Way, Central Business District, Opposite CBN headquarters, Abuja (Nigeria) and through Zoom.
“NIWIIT is the women’s wing of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) that firmly believes that gender equality, in all functions and at all levels, is a powerful performance enabler”, Bayo-Osibo said.
