Enextgen Finds MTN 4G LTE Quality in Yaba ‘Unpredictable’

Enextgen Wireless, a provider of consumer experience on mobile networks through its flagship National Independent Wireless Broadband Quality Reporting (NIWBQR) which measures the quality of effort in Radio Frequency engineering invested in commercial LTE network, has released report of its findings regarding the quality of 4G LTE deployed by MTN Nigeria in Yaba area of Lagos.
The company described MTN’s 4G LTE quality as ‘unpredictable’.
In the report made available to TechEconomy.ng, Enextgen Wireless report contains thus, “We have used MTN’s 4G LTE on Harvey Road in Yaba since 2018. The problem has remained the same: ‘Unpredictable quality of experience due to poor RF Optimization’.
“We have collected UE logs daily along specific routes between Araromi and Harvey Road in Yaba for months now and the problems have remained variations of ‘Unpredictably wide range of packet latencies, from packet losses to very low packet delays’”.
The report also shows unpredictable number of MTN’s re-directions to 3G where latencies are routinely very high and inability to access the internet abound, and “areas with very poor quality of Radio Frequency (poor RF Optimization). The following slides show our experience in five weekdays starting from Wednesday of last week (February 23 – March 03, 2022), while the overall quality is still bad, it is an improvement over previous experience”.
“Is this a chance occurrence or a result of some effort by MTN?”, the report queried.

Enextgen Wireless said its UE was not able to connect to the internet during a trip from Araromi to Harvey Road from 8:27 AM to 9:12 AM on February 23, 2022
“This is not uncommon.
“There was data on the SIM. When contacted, MTN responded almost immediately.
“MTN did not find any issues with our subscription or data plan. They advised we reset our mobile device and get back if the issue persisted. Our UE was mobile. We did not do anything on our UE.
“Our 4G LTE access to the internet returned by itself. We did not re-trace our steps to check if issue persisted”, the report reads in part.

The area of No. 1 Harvey Road, close to Domino’s Pizza has experienced poor LTE service for a long time as a result of poor RF optimization.

- Zoomed-in view of the RRC Call Drop area
- This is the only area where RRC Call Drops occur consistently.
- For an obvious reason
- Poor RF Optimization
- We wish MTN would address this.

In this case, it seems obvious that the quality was worse in 3G than in 4G (LTE). This is typical.
