Nigeria has a fast-growing startup ecosystem. The country is home to multiple innovation hubs and incubators supporting new ventures.
With the government recognizing the opportunity within the tech sector, it has introduced various initiatives to boost startups. However, more needs to be done to create an enabling environment for emerging businesses to thrive.
With this in mind, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the minister of communication, innovation, and digital economy has announced the launch of the Startup Support and Engagement Portal. According to the minister, the portal is a key requirement for the implementation of the Nigeria Startup Act.
Aiming to solve some of these issues within the startup ecosystem, the former President signed the Nigeria Startup Act 2022 into law on October 19, 2022.
The Act is a collaborative effort between the Presidency and the Nigerian tech startup scene to utilize jointly developed legislation to fully realize the promise of our digital economy.
The Act’s goals are to position Nigeria’s startup ecosystem as the continent’s preeminent hub for digital technology and to facilitate the establishment and growth of an environment that supports technology-enabled companies in Nigeria.
“The launch of the Startup Support and Engagement Portal will allow us to initiate the process of setting up the startup consultative forums to select representatives to the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship, in order to facilitate discourse and consensus among Nigerian ecosystem players,” Dr Tijani said.
The minister noted that the startup portal will drive the identification and aggregation of Nigerian startups, venture capital companies, hubs, and innovation centres to facilitate engagement and support for ecosystem players.
