In a bid to promote inclusivity in artificial intelligence (AI) and related fields, Google DeepMind has launched its 2025 AI for Science Scholarships.
These scholarships are aimed at training students from underrepresented backgrounds, particularly in Africa, with the tools and opportunities needed to scale in AI and science disciplines.
With this initiative, Google DeepMind is creating a more diverse AI industry, recognising that the inclusion of varied perspectives is important for the responsible development of emerging technologies.
In supporting talented individuals who might otherwise face limitations to advanced education, the programme seeks to ensure AI benefits all of society.
Fully Funded Opportunities for African Students
This year’s scholarships come with postgraduate opportunities available through the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and other leading institutions.
Selected students will receive comprehensive financial support, covering tuition fees, living expenses, relocation costs, and access to essential resources like high-speed internet and computing facilities.
Added to these, recipients will benefit from mentorship by experts at Google DeepMind, as well as invitations to attend international AI conferences and events.
These interactions are designed to help students build networks and gain insights into cutting-edge developments in the field.
Eligibility and Requirements
To qualify for the Google DeepMind 2025 AI Scholarships, applicants must be citizens and residents of African countries and possess a strong academic background in disciplines such as mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, or related fields.
Applicants must hold at least a four-year undergraduate degree or its equivalent and must not have previously received an AIMS scholarship.
The programme also emphasises transparency and rigour in the selection process. Candidates will be required to complete a detailed application form, submit academic transcripts, and solve mathematical and coding tasks to demonstrate their technical abilities. Finalists will be invited to participate in online interviews in May 2025.
Application Process and Deadlines
Interested candidates can apply through the official AIMS application portal before the deadline on Friday, March 21, 2025. The application involves uploading a curriculum vitae, a 500-word motivation letter, and other supporting documents.
For students pursuing master’s degrees outside Africa, Google DeepMind is partnering with universities globally, offering similar scholarships in North America, Europe, South America, and the Middle East.
Applicants are encouraged to visit the respective university websites for region-specific information and deadlines.
The 2025 AI Masters scholarships outside of the UK will be offered by IIE, to applicants and scholars selected by host universities. For more information, visit IIE’s website.
