A Reality Check On Nigeria’s 2025 Growth Projections as Q2 Progresses

April 28, 2025

You know what’s funny? You spend months saving up, finally let go of your Android for an iPhone, thinking you’ve crossed some invisible digital line, and then boom! You’re stuck staring at an empty WhatsApp screen and wondering why your photos look like they’ve vanished into thin air.

It’s like buying a new car, only to find out the keys don’t work because you used to drive a Toyota.

Switching from Android to iPhone shouldn’t feel that difficult. But for many of us, it does. And while we can chalk part of it up to tech incompatibility, the truth is deeper, and far more deliberate.

The Pain of Switching

The migration from Android to iPhone is both technically awkward and emotionally exhausting. People are not just moving files, they’re carrying memories, business contacts, chat histories, and sometimes, their entire digital footprint.

Let’s start with WhatsApp. Yes, there are now official ways to move your chats from Android to iPhone. But try telling that to someone with poor internet, a full Google Drive, or an iPhone with less storage than their old phone. It rarely goes smoothly. And if you’re not tech-savvy, or can’t afford a technician to do it, you could end up losing more than data. You lose time, trust, and peace of mind.

Then there’s the issue of app compatibility. Many Android apps don’t even exist on iOS. Others require new logins, new verification codes, and sometimes, new subscriptions. Your phonebook may carry over, but your life doesn’t.

Here’s the part we don’t talk about enough: the pain of switching is designed. Apple wants it that way. The more difficult it is to move your stuff into the Apple world, the more likely you are to stay, and buy more Apple products. The tech giant has built a seamless, user-friendly environment… but only for those already inside.

From AirDrop to iMessage to iCloud backups, Apple’s ecosystem is optimised for loyalty, not mobility. If you’re switching from iPhone to iPhone, everything restores with a single tap. But moving in from Android? Prepare for confusion, compatibility issues, and data loss.

Google isn’t blameless either. Its ecosystem is wider but usually disjointed. There’s no true Android equivalent of iCloud. And while tools like Google Photos or Google Contacts help, they’re not tightly integrated with Apple devices.

The result is an invisible border wall between the two tech giants, and users are stuck at the checkpoint.

Why is This Important in Nigeria

In Nigeria, phones have gone beyond just tools to status symbols. For many youths, owning an iPhone is about perception, not entirely features. The rise in second-hand iPhone markets is proof. People will swap a brand-new Android device for an older iPhone just to “belong.”

But this migration comes at a cost. Not everyone knows how to transfer their data properly. Many rely on phone shop assistants who usually don’t know more than the customers themselves. This creates a huge information gap and leaves many frustrated, misinformed, or ripped off.

  • Data is expensive.
  • Internet speeds are unstable.
  • Tech literacy isn’t where it should be.

But then, tech giants design migration processes as if everyone has fibre broadband, three power banks, and a YouTube tutorial playing on another screen.

It’s unrealistic and unfair.

Making Switching Less Painful

So, how can users actually switch from Android to iPhone without losing their minds, or their memories?

Quick Guide: How to Transfer Data from Android to iPhone (2025 Edition)

✅ Step 1: Prepare Both Phones

  • Fully charge both devices.
  • Connect both phones to stable Wi-Fi.
  • On Android, enable Bluetooth and check for updates.

✅ Step 2: Install the “Move to iOS” App

  • Download Move to iOS from the Google Play Store on your Android device.

✅ Step 3: Set Up Your iPhone

  • Turn on your new iPhone and begin the initial setup.
  • When you reach “Apps & Data,” choose “Move Data from Android.”

✅ Step 4: Connect Both Devices

  • Open Move to iOS on your Android and tap Continue.
  • On your iPhone, a code will appear.
  • Enter that code into the Android device.

✅ Step 5: Choose What to Transfer

  • Select what you want to transfer: contacts, messages, photos, videos, web bookmarks, calendars, etc.
  • Tap Continue and wait. This could take several minutes or longer, depending on file size.

✅ Step 6: Finalise Setup

  • Once transfer is complete, finish setting up your iPhone.
  • Download necessary apps again from the App Store.

📌 Note on WhatsApp:
To move chats properly, go to:
Settings > Chats > Move Chats to iOS on your Android WhatsApp.
Ensure your chat history is backed up on Google Drive before switching.

A Problem Bigger Than Phones

Switching from Android to iPhone in 2025 still feels like migrating across two digital continents. And it shouldn’t be this hard. Not when tech companies have billions of dollars and machine-like control over our data.

For Nigeria, the issue is about equity. Our reality, low digital literacy, high data costs, inconsistent electricity, is not considered when these systems are designed.

What Needs to Change?

  • More localised support. Retail phone shops should provide free, accurate transfer guides.
  • Better education. Tech influencers and digital publications should break down migration solutions in local languages.
  • Less brand arrogance. Apple and Google must acknowledge that Nigeria is a key emerging market and simplify switching for users here.

Buying a new phone shouldn’t mean losing your past. It should mean upgrading your future.
