Primero Transport Services Limited, operator of Lagos State’s pioneer Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, marked its 10th anniversary on Thursday, December 11, 2025, with a colourful celebration at its headquarters in Ikorodu.
The event, sponsored by Sterling Bank Plc, Value Media Advertising Limited, e-Purse Systems Limited, and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), drew traditional rulers, government officials, partners, staff, customers, and other well-wishers.
Some dignitaries present included the MD of BRTAN, Alhaji R.A. Rabiu; HRM Oba Richard Abayomi Ogunsanya, the Olubeshe of Ibeshe; HRM Oba Adeoriyomi Oyebo, the Obateru of Egbin; HRM Oba Orimadegun Kasali, the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo; and HRM Oba (Engr.) Aremu Shotonwa, the Sekumade of Ipakodo.
In his welcome address, Fola Tinubu, the MD/CEO of Primero Transport, said the company’s survival over the past decade was due to the dedication of its workers, especially during tough periods when salaries could not be paid on time.
“Ten years ago, when we started, we didn’t know what the journey would look like. That we are still here is because of all of you. We’ve had our ups and downs, and some very tough times, but you stayed. No MD could ask for better people,” he said.
Tinubu noted that the company had recorded commendable growth despite challenges.
He highlighted Primero’s early adoption of technology, from offering Wi-Fi on its buses to introducing electronic ticketing, and the listing of its N16.50 billion Primero BRT Securitisation SPV PLC Bond on FMDQ Securities Limited.
“We had hoped to be listed on the Nigerian Exchange by now, but we still have a lot to celebrate. We were the first bus company in Nigeria to introduce Wi-Fi and electronic ticketing,” he said.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, commended Primero for staying the course and encouraged deeper collaboration in developing cleaner, more efficient transport systems.
“As we mark this milestone, the future will demand more innovation and integration. The next phase requires cleaner technologies, better passenger experience, and wider connectivity,” he said.
Speaking on transportation costs, Fola Tinubu renewed his call for government support for mass transit, saying subsidies are necessary to keep fares affordable across the country.
“I know subsidy is not a popular word in Nigeria, but the truth is that we need to subsidize public transportation, not just in Lagos but nationwide,” he said.
In her vote of thanks, Idoreyin Popoola, head of the Business Support Group, appreciated the management and staff for sustaining the company through difficult years.
“This is a remarkable milestone. Regardless of the odds, we pulled through. Our prayer is that in the next 10 years, we’ll gather again, bigger and better,” she said.
Fola Tinubu received a Leadership Award, while senior executives, Frank Obi, Oluwabunmi Famogbiele, Idoreyin Popoola, Alaba Agbede, Clarence Jumbo, and Obasanjo Obafemi, were also honoured. Several staff members were named Primero Ambassadors, and long-service awards were presented.
With over 550 buses in operation, Primero says it remains committed to safety, professionalism, innovation, and punctuality.
As Lagos works toward a world-class public transport system, the company’s first decade stands as evidence of how vision and resilience can transform a critical sector.
