The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has approved the construction of a N1 trillion metropolitan rail service in Kano state to transform the state’s transportation network system, improve economic and social activities, and reduce traffic congestion in urban areas.

Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano state, stated this while addressing the state’s delegates team that participated in the 2025 national Qur’anic recitation competition in Borno state.

“The project aims to provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system, connecting key districts and enhancing mobility for the residents,” the governor said in a statement issued on Thursday, January 29, 2026, by Sanusi Bature, his spokesperson.

“It is expected to stimulate trade and investment, improve the quality of life, and position Kano as a major transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.

The Kano state government would work closely with federal agencies to ensure smooth implementation and transparency.”

Governor Yusuf lauded the federal government’s urban renewal drive, restating his administration’s commitment to supportive policies and infrastructural development that will boost the state’s economic expansion, progress, advancement, prosperity, and improvement in living standards.

Recall that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) had, on November 6, 2025, announced that the federal government would bring to light a comprehensive national railway development roadmap to ensure rail connectivity across all 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

The national railway project is projected to improve the nation’s transportation network, living conditions, and the standard of comfort.

The NRC stated the roadmap is drawn to enable every state to access and utilise the national rail corridors at no implicit cost.
