The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at elevating data protection and privacy standards across Nigeria’s telecommunications ecosystem.
The MoU signed in a ceremony attended by key stakeholders from both regulatory bodies, underscores the increasing importance of collaboration between regulators in safeguarding personal data amid rapid digital growth.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, national commissioner of the NDPC, emphasised that meaningful progress in this area is only possible through effective collaboration and cooperation between regulators. Prioritising privacy in the telecommunications sector cannot be overstated, and this MoU represents a significant step forward.
At the signing, the NDPC also recognised the leadership of Dr. Aminu Maida, the executive vice‑chairman of the NCC, for his proactive engagement with mobile network operators on issues of privacy and compliance.
Dr. Olatunji applauded Dr. Maida’s efforts, noting that such leadership is essential to advancing a culture of data protection within the telecom sector.
Dr. Maida echoed this sentiment, highlighting the global importance of data protection and reaffirming the NCC’s commitment to ensuring compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) across all entities under its regulatory oversight.
Both commissions have agreed to begin implementing the provisions of the MoU without delay, highlighting a shared focus on regulatory cooperation, enforcement, and the protection of personal data across Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
