Global innovative activity is showing resilience as international patent applications filed through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) rose by 0.7% in 2025.
This marks the second consecutive year of growth, with total filings reaching a record 275,900.
The growth is largely attributed to a massive surge in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Digital communication emerged as the top category, accounting for 11.1% of all applications.
This was followed closely by computer technology (9.6%) and electrical machinery (9.0%).
The AI Factor:
Daren Tang, WIPO director general noted that Artificial Intelligence is the latest engine fueling this growth. Increased investment in AI deployment is transforming how enterprises secure IP protection across borders.
Notably, the semiconductor sector recorded one of the fastest growth rates, tied with digital communication at +6.1% for the year. For investors and tech enthusiasts, the data confirms that the global economy is doubling down on deep tech.
While traditional sectors remain stable, the capital and intellectual energy are clearly shifting toward the hardware and infrastructure (semiconductors) required to power the next generation of AI.
