X Rebuilds Android App from Scratch with Faster Performance, New Foundation

X has released a completely rebuilt version of its Android app, almost a year after saying it would start over with a fresh codebase instead of trying to improve the ageing version.

The update is now available globally through the Google Play Store. According to the company, the new app comes with faster loading, smoother scrolling and more reliable notifications while giving its engineers a stronger foundation to introduce new features more quickly.

The project has been in development for almost a year. In August 2025, X’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier, said the company had assembled an Android “dream team” to rebuild the app after years of complaints that the Android experience lagged behind iOS.

Later that year, Bier also revealed that Android recorded one of X’s biggest download weeks ever in October, reinforcing the need to improve the platform.

Announcing the release, Bier described the work as one of the biggest engineering efforts in the company’s history.

“It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed.”

Rather than updating the old app, X rebuilt it from the ground up using a modern software foundation. The company believes this will make it easier and faster to develop and release new features in the future.

The Android rebuild comes as X expands its products beyond social networking. In recent months, the company launched standalone apps for X Money and X Chat, reiterating its goal to build a comprehensive digital ecosystem.

The new Android app could also help X strengthen its place in markets where Android dominates, including Africa, Asia and Latin America. For years, Android users received new features later than iPhone users, while some also experienced bugs and broken links that affected the app’s performance.

Even so, X admits there is still work to do. Bier said the company is improving performance on older Android devices and is still working to bring Spaces, its live audio feature, to the rebuilt app.

Other features, including the new video editor, react-with-video, cashtags and custom timelines, are also expected to arrive in future updates.

Android users can access the rebuilt app by updating X through the Google Play Store.
