MTN MIP-5 - MTN Media Innovation Programme

MTN MIP-5

MTN Nigeria has announced that applications are now open for the fifth edition of its Media Innovation Programme (MTN MIP-5), with an expanded cohort of 25 fellows, increasing from 20 in previous editions.

The expansion to 25 is symbolic, marking MTN Nigeria’s 25th anniversary and reinforcing its continued commitment to supporting the development of Nigeria’s media landscape.

As MTN Nigeria marks 25 years of connecting people, the programme represents a parallel investment in the storytellers shaping how that connection is understood, experienced, and amplified across society. It underscores a deliberate effort to support a vibrant, independent, and forward-looking media industry that continues to evolve alongside the digital economy.

Launched in 2022 in partnership with the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University (PAU), the fully funded six‑month certificate programme has grown into one of Africa’s most influential media capacity building platforms.

Since inception, it has equipped media professionals with the knowledge, tools, and networks required to lead and innovate within a rapidly evolving media and technology landscape.

The fifth edition introduces an expanded cohort, a broader curriculum scope, and a stronger pan-African outlook that broadens fellows’ perspectives and exposure to media and technology ecosystems across the continent.

“The Media Innovation Programme reflects our commitment to supporting the growth and evolution of the media industry by providing access to knowledge, exposure, and meaningful engagement with the realities shaping it. The expansion to 25 fellows this year is a deliberate reflection of our 25-year milestone, and a reminder that as the media industry continues to evolve, there is a continued need to invest in the people and ideas that will shape its future,” said Tobe Okigbo, chief corporate services and sustainability officer, MTN Nigeria.

The programme is delivered through academic sessions at the School of Media & Communication, Pan-Atlantic University, combined with industry engagements and an international study visit.

The international component in South Africa includes academic sessions at the University of Johannesburg, alongside engagements with leaders across the media, business, and policy landscape.

These experiences provide a broader perspective on the role of the media within society and its intersection with technology, governance, and economic development across the continent.

“At the School of Media and Communication, we are committed to delivering a learning experience that combines academic rigour with real world relevance. The Media Innovation Programme lives up to our institutional goal of forming competent professionals who will make a difference in society. The programme brings together academic depth, industry insight, and practical engagement to equip participants with the critical thinking and professional competence required to excel in a rapidly evolving media environment,” said Dr. Ikechukwu Obiaya, dean, School of Media and Communication, Pan‑Atlantic University.

Since its launch, the Media Innovation Programme has built a strong and influential alumni network across Nigeria’s media industry.

Alumni now occupy key positions across leading media organisations,  have launched new media platforms, and continue to shape public discourse through impactful storytelling across digital and traditional channels.

For many, the programme has been a defining moment in their professional journey, broadening perspectives, sharpening skills, and accelerating growth.

How to Apply

Applications to MTN MIP-5 are currently open via the School of Media and Communication website, mtnmip.smc.edu.ng/,  with the application window closing April 22, 2026.

Shortlisted applicants will undergo a structured and highly competitive selection process, and successful applicants will commence the programme in May 2026.

The programme is open to media practitioners and digital content creators working across print, electronic, digital, and social media.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to innovation, impactful storytelling, and continuous professional development.
