TechEconomy reached out to Elsie Godwin to find out how she started ELSiEiSY, and the motives behind establishing the blog. She has some words of advice for budding blogging: “Remember the influence you wield”.
Happy anniversary, Elsie!
When asked how it all-started with her blogging, Elsie said:
“Blogging for me started with me wanting to share an unpleasant dating experience. At the time, the dynamics of social media in this part of the world was very different from what it is now. It was the time of lists – published on blogs and driving conversations on twitter.
“There were different well written stories and lists by amazing budding writers who mostly maintained pseudo names.
“My close friends at the time had their own blogs and I needed them to share my story on their blogs but they refused, urging me to start my own blog. Being someone who has always loved a challenge, I took it up, weighed my options between blogspot and wordpress, I chose wordpress and the rest as they say is history.
“Published my first blog post on the 29th of December 2012 and looking back, I believe that was a defining moment for my career path.
What does ELSiEiSY mean?
So my full name is Elsie Isioma Godwin. Elsieisy is the combination of my first and second name. Elsie-isy (Isioma).
As a graduate of computer science, how easy was it for you to switch to blogging? Do you still practise computer science as a course?
“Blogging is a mixture of art and science. You need technology to run a blog. My blog is currently powered on the wordpress platform with the help of a web/software developer. However, having a working knowledge of what happens at the backend of my blog is also important to me. I have to understand decisions we make with things like domain, host, SSL, theme, widget control and so much more as we make them.
“My understanding of digital marketing tools and how to use them is a part of computer science. Marketing is science and the way marketing has evolved over the years creates a field where I have to always interact with technology. My career as a Marketing professional is tech based and being able to use these tools means that I always have to practise.
When asked how she could describe the last 10 years of ELSiEiSY blog, she said:
“The last 10 years have been impactful and rewarding. I have grown in many ways and evolved into the woman that I am now because of my curiosity and thirst for knowledge that I can share – blog. I have found opportunities in researching and learning on the go”.
Elsie said her commitment to the society through EELSiEiSY blog is that it will always support impact projects. “The goal is to provide value through blogging as we help our readers see issues from different perspectives”, she added.
We have seen controversial bloggers, but you chose to be rational and professional?
“I do not see other bloggers as irrational or unprofessional, they just practise a different kind of blogging and it is okay. I only wish that they also create room to promote content that will help maintain our culture and value as well. I have made attempts to change my style of blogging for one reason or the other, but I always fall back to realising that the only type of blogging I can do is blogging for impact.
“It’s a decision which resonates with my thought process and value system. I don’t think it makes me more professional than other bloggers”.
Recently, you graduated from PAU certification programmes with three certificates in the same year… how did you pull that?
“Mahn! I don’t know how I pulled that off. I am thankful to God for what I did. At some point, it felt like I had bitten more than I could possibly chew. I thought that I would not be able to meet the criteria for graduation in one of the courses. But for each new week, God strengthened me and I pulled through. It was tough but necessary. I also have to thank MTN Nigeria for sponsoring one of the programmes on Media Innovation. It’s been a great year!”
What is the next phase for Elsieisy blog?
“I will keep writing, seek out other brilliant minds who would love to write for the blog, look out for ways to diversify content distribution for wider reach and maintain the authenticity of the brand”.
How do you select topics to write or discuss?
“I draw inspiration from the news, trending stories, personal encounters and lived experiences.
It seems you multitask alot because apart from ELSiEiSY blog, you are engaged in other Marketing communications activities…how do you combine these roles?
“Lol. I think I am the Queen of multitasking. I also know when to take a break and rest. When I take on a job – full time, part time or contract, it is my responsibility to deliver on that job and my blog takes the back seat. However, I have people who work for and with me on the blog from time to time to ensure that it is kept alive”.
Is blogging a noble job?
“It can be. It depends on who is blogging and what their values are”. Elsie said.0
In her advice to other bloggers, Elsie said:
“Remember the influence you wield. To whom much is given, much more is expected. Use your platform to spread more positive than negativity. We can conquer the craze of being driven by clicks and impressions if we choose to”.
