Remini AI photo editing App Now top position on the App Store with over 40 million downloads, writes Tolulope Olaniyi:

Remini, an AI photo editing app, has taken the internet by storm and dethroned Instagram’s Threads as it gains popularity on TikTok.

Launched in 2019, Remini recently introduced a generative AI feature that allows users to create stunning professional headshots by simply uploading their own selfies.

Remini’s rise to fame

The app’s rise to fame was fueled by TikTok user @Gracesplace, who showcased how she generated multiple professional-looking headshots from her own selfies, with her post garnering over 42.9 million views.

This viral video triggered a massive demand for Remini, catapulting it to the number one spot on the U.S. App Store on July 11th, surpassing the newly launched Instagram Threads. With over 22 million worldwide downloads in the last 30 days and more than 20 million daily active users, Remini has become a sensation.

Data from app analytics firm Apptopia and data.ai further confirms Remini’s triumph, reporting 2.1 million U.S. downloads across iOS and Android in the past 10 days and a substantial increase in consumer spending from June 9-15.

How Remini works

To create AI headshots with Remini, users select eight to 12 photos showcasing different backgrounds, expressions, and face angles. After choosing their gender and a reference “model” image, they can explore various styles, including “trendy,” “travel,” “casual,” and “Korean aesthetic.”

The AI technology processes these images within minutes, offering users an intuitive swiping experience to view their generated headshots. This process draws similarities to the famous dating app, Tinder. Remini’s approach is reminiscent of Lensa AI, which went viral on TikTok last year but faced controversy for using artists’ work as training data and generating inappropriate images.

Features and pricing

Beyond AI headshots, Remini offers an array of photo editing features, including restoring old photos, enhancing face quality, adjusting colors and tones, and even transforming selfies with an Official Barbie filter inspired by the new Barbie movie.

While Remini is a free download, certain features require a subscription, priced at $9.99 per week or $79.99 per year. Some users have found a way around this by starting a free trial, creating their AI headshots, and then canceling their subscription.

User reviews

Despite its viral success, Remini‘s AI headshots have received mixed reviews. Some users express dissatisfaction with body adjustments, such as appearing skinnier or unrealistic enhancements.

Concerns about the app’s impact on mental health and body image have been raised, though others have found motivation for weight loss through their AI-edited “skinny” photos.

The company behind Remini has not yet addressed these concerns, but they have seen remarkable success with over 40 million downloads from July 2-15. Remini is continuing to refine its AI technology to minimize such issues.
