Google Fi has introduced a new feature, Number Lock, aimed at enhancing user security against SIM swapping attacks.

Number Lock prevents users from transferring their phone number to a new device or porting it to another carrier.

Given the severity of SIM swapping attacks, enabling this feature is highly recommended for Google Fi users.

The new feature provides additional protection at no extra cost. Once activated, it ensures that users cannot transfer their number to another phone or port it to a different carrier, effectively safeguarding against unauthorized attempts to hijack a phone number.

To enable Number Lock, users need to sign in to their Google Fi account on the web. They should navigate to “Phone settings,” select “Privacy & security,” and then choose “Sign in to manage Number lock.”

After re-entering their account credentials, they can toggle the “Number lock” feature to ON. Conversely, to transfer the number to a new device or another carrier, users must disable Number Lock by following the same steps and switching the toggle to OFF.

With SIM swapping attacks leading to high risks, the Number Lock feature is very necessary and reliable for protecting users’ personal information and maintaining the integrity of their mobile communications.
