The Lagos State Government (LASG) plans to expand the Cowry ticketing system across all modes of public transportation within the next two years.

This expansion, outlined in the recently released Lagos State Transport Policy, focuses on enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of public transportation services in the state.

The Cowry ticketing system, initially introduced for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, has been highly convenient for commuters with its modern, contactless payment solution.

Utilizing reloadable smart cards, known as Cowry Cards, passengers can seamlessly manage their fares, check balances, and top up their cards through various channels, including terminals, online platforms, and mobile apps.

Under the expanded scheme, the Cowry payment system will integrate with all public transportation modes, including ferries and smaller commercial buses operated by the Lagos Bus Services Limited (LSBL).

This integration aims to simplify the boarding process, reduce cash transactions, and provide commuters with a more convenient and efficient travel experience.

The LASG’s Transport Policy outlines several key initiatives aimed at enhancing public transportation in Lagos. Alongside the expansion of the Cowry ticketing system, the policy emphasizes the development of the BRT network, establishment of the Light Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) system, and promotion of water transport for both passengers and freight.

Again, measures such as the First and Last Mile (FLM) bus arrangements, improved access for women, children, and the physically challenged, and increased private sector involvement in transport infrastructure are highlighted.

Furthermore, traffic management strategies are incorporated to optimize existing infrastructure and alleviate congestion on Lagos roads. These collective efforts indicate the LASG’s work in creating a more inclusive, efficient, and sustainable transportation system for residents and commuters.

The implementation timeline outlined in the Transport Policy projects the full integration of the Cowry payment system across various public transportation modes within the next two years.
