This concern took centre stage at the Africa Tech Alliance Forum (AfriTECH 5.0) and ATAEx Awards 2025, where Happiness Obioha, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tizel Cybersecurity, delivered one of the event’s most compelling arguments for a new cybersecurity paradigm rooted in African intelligence rather than foreign technology.

Speaking on the theme “Beyond Firewalls: The Case for Homegrown Cybersecurity Intelligence in Africa,” Obioha maintained that Africa’s cybersecurity risks cannot be effectively mitigated with imported solutions that were never designed for the continent’s distinct digital realities.

She described Africa’s cyber landscape as one defined by unique threat actors, infrastructural limitations, cultural nuances, and business patterns that global security platforms often fail to understand.

According to her, relying solely on perimeter-based defenses such as firewalls is no longer adequate in a world where cyberattacks grow more adaptive, persistent, and sophisticated.

Obioha argued that Africa’s dependence on generic global tools has created a critical gap in the continent’s ability to detect, interpret, and respond to emerging threats, and explained that foreign cybersecurity systems frequently misread local attack patterns or fail to anticipate region-specific vulnerabilities.

As a result, many African organizations operate with a false sense of safety while facing increasingly complex threats ranging from ransomware and financial fraud to targeted breaches on government infrastructure.

The Tizel CEO emphasised that Africa’s long-term security lies in adopting intelligence-led approaches that draw from local insights, indigenous expertise, and continental research, and noted that such solutions allow faster and more precise threat detection because they are built with an understanding of local behaviour patterns and digital environments.

Beyond security improvements, she stressed that homegrown cybersecurity also strengthens national sovereignty, reduces capital flight, expands technical capacity, and creates jobs in one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors.

Obioha cited Tizel Cybersecurity as an example of what locally grounded innovation can achieve, explaining that the company’s model integrates contextual intelligence, real-time monitoring, rapid incident response, and strict adherence to regulatory frameworks.

According to Happiness Obioha, Tizel’s work with banks, telecom operators, government agencies, and SMEs demonstrates the measurable impact of Africa-specific cybersecurity architecture.

Among the results she highlighted were the prevention of a major ransomware attack in the financial sector, a significant reduction in network downtime for a telecom operator, and the deployment of effective real-time monitoring systems for a government agency.

She reinforced that Tizel’s success is built on its deep understanding of the African digital ecosystem, a familiarity she described as indispensable for delivering cybersecurity that genuinely protects African institutions.

The region’s business culture, infrastructural diversity, and evolving digital habits, she said, can only be accurately interpreted by experts who operate within the same environment.

Obioha urged African enterprises and governments to take a more deliberate approach toward securing their digital future, and encouraged them to re-examine their cybersecurity posture, invest in indigenous intelligence-driven solutions, and build internal teams equipped to respond to emerging threats.

The survival and competitiveness of African businesses, she noted, will increasingly depend on their ability to align security strategies with the realities of the continent’s rapidly evolving digital economy.

“Africa’s digital future is promising,” she concluded during the presentation at AfriTECH 5.0, “but it must be secured with intelligence and innovation that come from within the continent.”

AfriTECH 5.0: Chukwuemeka Mbabaie Explains Why Africa Needs Decentralized Digital Sovereignty https://techeconomy.ng/why-africa-needs-decentralized-digital-sovereignty/ https://techeconomy.ng/why-africa-needs-decentralized-digital-sovereignty/#respond Mon, 24 Nov 2025 07:22:25 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=171534 A powerful call for Africa to seize control of its digital future echoed through the hall at the 5th edition of the Africa Tech Alliance Forum (AfriTECH 5.0) in Lagos, as Lagos Blockchain Week Lead, Chukwuemeka Mbabaie, delivered a compelling presentation urging the continent to embrace decentralized systems as the foundation of a new, sovereign digital economy.

Mbabaie described the blockchain sector as a rapidly expanding “borderless, multi-billion-dollar industry,” already valued at more than $3 billion and growing at an unprecedented pace, and emphasized that Africans, particularly young Nigerians, must urgently position themselves to benefit from this global shift.

“You can be in Gombe or Makurdi and still earn globally. It’s a borderless environment,” he said, stressing that the blockchain ecosystem offers opportunities without the need for visas, relocation, or traditional entry barriers.

He explained that decentralized systems represent a fundamental redesign of digital infrastructure, one where no single corporation, government, or financial institution wields absolute control. Instead, authority is distributed across globally dispersed nodes and validators operating under transparent, verifiable rules enabled by blockchain and peer-to-peer technologies.

This, he noted, stands in sharp contrast to Africa’s prevailing centralized systems.

While acknowledging the contributions of centralized platforms like Opay, Moniepoint, and M-Pesa in advancing financial inclusion, Mbabaie warned that their architectures leave millions vulnerable to outages, policy disruptions, and systemic failures.

He noted that blockchain networks, by comparison, rarely experience shutdowns due to their global distribution. “If a node in America goes down, the one in Gombe or China keeps the system running. That’s the beauty of the space,” he said.

Beyond reliability, Mbabaie underscored digital sovereignty as decentralization’s most critical advantage. It enables financial transactions that cannot be arbitrarily blocked, digital identities that cannot be erased, and infrastructure that Africans themselves can build, own, and profit from.

“Africa owns the rails, not just rides the train,” he declared, urging stakeholders to envision a continent where Africans write the rules of their digital economy.

He broke down the foundational principles of decentralized systems, no gatekeepers, transparent rules, and universally distributed data, highlighting their superiority to traditional financial structures that can manipulate money or restrict access, adding that blockchain offers immutable transparency: “Any transaction can be seen. Any file can be tracked. Nothing disappears.”

Citing Bitcoin’s more than 200,000 active wallets and the resilience of decentralized internet initiatives like Wikipedia’s distributed network, Mbabaie argued that Africa must prepare for a future powered by smart contracts, AI-integrated protocols, and globally interoperable blockchain systems.

To fast-track this transition, he outlined three urgent policy actions for African governments and regional tech bodies:

  • Data localization and mandatory interoperability to ensure critical digital infrastructure is hosted locally and free from vendor lock-in.
  • A risk-based licensing regime for Virtual Asset Service Providers and a mandatory 90-day token classification window aligned with the VASPA framework.
  • A ₦50 billion Sovereign Compute Fund to support the development of African-built Large Language Models (LLMs) and on-chain AI agents capable of competing in the global AI race.

Mbabaie praised Nigeria’s recent progress in establishing regulatory and compliance structures for blockchain adoption and reiterated that the nation still leads Africa despite earlier missed opportunities, and urged young innovators, policymakers, and industry players to act decisively.

“We are at a defining moment,” he said. “If Africa embraces decentralized systems now, we can unlock long-term economic empowerment, digital independence, and true global competitiveness.”

AfriTECH 5.0: Rudman Highlights Local Traffic Exchange as Vital for Digital Sovereignty https://techeconomy.ng/afritech-5-0-rudman-highlights-local-traffic-exchange-as-vital-for-digital-sovereignty/ https://techeconomy.ng/afritech-5-0-rudman-highlights-local-traffic-exchange-as-vital-for-digital-sovereignty/#respond Mon, 17 Nov 2025 06:54:59 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=171120 Mr. Muhammed Rudman, the chief executive officer of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), has underscored the urgent need for Nigeria to strengthen its local traffic exchange ecosystem, describing it as a strategic national imperative for speed, security, and digital economic expansion.

Speaking during a presentation at the African Tech Alliance (AfriTECH 5.0) Forum on Thursday last week, Rudman explained that local traffic exchange, where ISPs, content providers, and networks exchange data within Nigeria rather than routing it through international paths, remains the backbone of a modern, efficient internet economy.

He noted that Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) enable this by ensuring that data generated in Nigeria stays within the country, leading to faster connectivity, better user experience, and significant cost savings.

Rudman emphasised that the most visible benefit for users is dramatically reduced latency.

A cross section of AfriTECh 5.0 attendees
A cross section of AfriTECh 5.0 attendees

According to him, internet traffic routed abroad often travels through undersea cables to Europe before returning to Nigeria, resulting in delays between 150ms and 300ms. However, with local peering at IXPN, latency drops to as low as 5ms to 10ms.

“This is the difference between a frozen video call and a smooth one,” Rudman said. “For real-time applications like gaming, fintech transactions, and cloud services, milliseconds matter.”

He added that lower latency boosts productivity for businesses and enhances the performance of modern digital tools.

Rudman listed data sovereignty as another critical benefit of keeping traffic local, and explained that when Nigerian data is forced to travel through foreign infrastructures, it exposes the country to unnecessary security and surveillance risks.

“Local traffic exchange keeps Nigerian data protected under Nigerian laws and reduces exposure to foreign interception,” he stated.

He also stressed that maintaining local routing is essential for continuity during cable cuts. “If an undersea cable fails, locally hosted services, such as .ng websites and email, continue running normally,” he added.

Citing a major milestone, Rudman revealed that the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria has recently crossed 2 terabits per second (Tbps) in peak domestic traffic, and described this as evidence of the rapid localisation of Nigerian internet traffic, with some members already achieving up to 70% traffic localisation.

According to him, this growth has saved the Nigerian economy hundreds of millions of dollars in international bandwidth costs, positioned Lagos as a digital hub for West Africa, and provided the foundation for local innovation in fintech, media, cloud services, and more.

“A fast, cheap, and reliable internet is the platform upon which new digital businesses are built,” he said.

Rudman urged policymakers, telecom operators, businesses, and global content providers to deepen their commitment to local peering, and recommended that government recognises IXPs as critical national infrastructure, mandate public-sector peering, and create policies that incentivise local hosting.

He further noted that while Telecoms and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) peer more aggressively to strengthen the ecosystem, content providers such as Google, Meta, Netflix, and the rest, deploy more local caches.

While urging businesses to choose ISPs that participate in local exchange and adopt Nigeria’s online identity such as .ng, the IXPN Chief Executive posited that local traffic exchange is no longer a technical luxury but a cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital sovereignty, economic competitiveness, and national security.

“Local traffic exchange is the foundation for a faster, safer, and more sovereign digital future,” he said.

The fifth edition of the Africa Tech Alliance Forum, (AfriTECH 5.0), which held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos, had as its theme, “AI & Sovereign Tech: Building Africa’s Digital Independence.”
