This follows several complaints, including a recent incident involving the BBC, where the summarisation feature distorted the content of headlines.

In a statement released on Monday, Apple confirmed that a software update, expected in the coming weeks, will make it more transparent to users when a summary has been created using Apple Intelligence. The company also encouraged users to report any issues with inaccurate summaries.

The BBC had complained after a headline about a murder case involving Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was incorrectly summarised.

The notification noted that Mangione had shot himself, a claim that was not part of the original report. Other inaccuracies stated by the BBC included summaries falsely announcing a darts champion before the tournament concluded and wrongly attributing a statement about sexual orientation to tennis star Rafael Nadal.

Apple Intelligence, introduced as part of its notification system, aims to help users by condensing information for quick viewing. However, the tool has had issues of occasionally generating misleading summaries. In one instance, a text message reading, “That hike almost killed me,” was summarised as “attempted suicide.”

Users have the option to disable the summarisation feature or adjust its application to specific apps through their device settings. Apple stated that the feature remains optional and part of its goal is to improve user experience with feedback-driven updates.

This development comes as tech companies face challenges in managing AI-generated content. Meta and Google, for example, have also revised their labelling of AI-generated outputs after complaints from users and professionals.

With Apple enhancing its software, the company aims to provide reliable and user-friendly technology. The forthcoming update is expected to address issues and improve reliance on the notification system.

Yahoo Mail Introduces AI-Powered Features to Simplify Email Management https://techeconomy.ng/yahoo-mail-introduces-ai-powered-features-to-simplify-email-management/ https://techeconomy.ng/yahoo-mail-introduces-ai-powered-features-to-simplify-email-management/#comments Tue, 11 Jun 2024 13:43:22 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=133745 Yahoo Mail now supports linking with other email accounts, including Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, and AOL, enabling users to manage all their emails from a single interface

Yahoo Mail is launching a series of updates on its desktop platform, with new AI capabilities targeted at improving email and task management.

Among these enhancements is a feature that generates brief AI summaries of emails, highlighting key tasks and actions with bulleted lists.

This function is part of a new Priority inbox tab, which uses AI to identify and prioritize the most important messages. Gmail has introduced a similar summaries feature for its mobile app, but access to it is restricted to Workspace and Google One AI Premium subscribers.

In addition to AI-generated summaries, Yahoo Mail is simplifying email interactions with quick action buttons directly in the inbox. These buttons enable users to perform tasks such as adding calendar events, checking in for flights, and tracking packages with ease.

A new persistent “starred view” panel also allows users to quickly access their most important tasks and revisit significant emails.

Again, Yahoo Mail now supports linking with other email accounts, including Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, and AOL, enabling users to manage all their emails from a single interface. This integration simplifies the process of handling multiple email accounts simultaneously.

Kyle Miller, Yahoo Mail’s VP of product, highlighted the convenience of the new features: “People are craving better ways to streamline the daily activities that often bog us down, like managing multiple email accounts, sorting out schedules, reading through long messages, and tracking orders. The new features we’re launching are aimed at making life that much easier for anyone that relies on email.”

These updates are being made available to new users in the US immediately and will roll out to existing US users on an opt-in basis starting today. Yahoo plans to introduce these features to its mobile app in the future.

Yahoo Mail’s move into AI is not new. Last summer, it incorporated several AI-driven features, such as an enhanced search function, the Shopping Save feature to locate forgotten gift cards and discount codes, and a writing assistant to help users compose emails with the right tone.
