The private screening, held in Lagos, brought together media professionals, filmmakers, and Canon’s creative community to experience the film’s moral lesson of resilience, determination, and triumph.

Beyond a film event, it was a statement of Canon’s growing investment in African storytelling and the next generation of visual creators.

At Canon, we believe in the power of storytelling and the importance of equipping creators with the right tools to express their vision,” said Rashad Ghani, B2C Business Unit Director for Canon Central and North Africa.

Our collaboration with Nora on Racket Queen reflects how technology and artistry come together to elevate filmmaking in Africa. We’re proud to continue empowering creators and building a thriving creative community across the region.”

The event featured two sessions, which included a morning media screening that offered an intimate viewing for journalists, followed by an evening industry gathering designed for filmmakers and Canon’s creative partners.

Each moment spotlighted Canon’s focus on enhancing film culture in Nigeria, while ensuring collaboration and conversation around emerging cinematic talent.

Adding to the excitement, Canon used the platform to unveil the EOS C50, its new entry-level cinema camera. Compact, powerful, and designed for accessibility, the C50 expands Canon’s professional lineup and supports aspiring filmmakers eager to step into professional production.

Racket Queen, Awolowo’s latest project in collaboration with Canon, follows the journey of a young girl who discovers her love for tennis and pursues her dream against all odds, guided by her mother’s solid support.

With standout performances from Pamilerin Ayodeji, Tunbosun Aiyedehin, Kayode Jnr Ojuolape, and Folu Storms, the film captures the spirit of perseverance and hope that aligns with many African stories.

Working with Canon is always a creative partnership built on trust and innovation,” Awolowo said. “The EOS C400 gave me the flexibility and technical precision I needed to bring Racket Queen to life. I’m proud of what we achieved together and grateful for Canon’s continued support for filmmakers like myself.”

Awolowo spoke about her creative journey, from studying accounting to becoming one of Nigeria’s most distinctive visual storytellers. She described how her approach to cinematography embraces imperfection, movement, and the emotional weight of real life, blending visual symbolism with narrative sincerity.

Canon’s B2B Director for Africa, Fashad, commended Awolowo’s talent and the spirit of Nigerian creativity that drives the country’s entertainment industry.

Every time I visit Lagos, I am reminded of the resilience and passion Nigerians bring to their craft,” he said. “This film celebrates that same spirit, resilience, determination, and the will to achieve. Talent is everywhere; it only needs to be recognised and nurtured. That’s why we are here, to back creativity, empower creators, and stand by them with our products, support, and technology.”

The collaboration aligns with Canon’s Innovation, Customer, and Employee Experience (ICE) strategy, which ensures creativity through access to advanced tools, mentorship, and training.

For over a decade, Canon has been a driving force in Nigeria’s visual industry, from partnerships with Netflix productions to hands-on training for content creators across the continent.

In Racket Queen, Awolowo goes beyond sports to deliver a heartfelt story about vision, family, and faith in one’s dreams, a reflection of Nigeria’s creative spirit.

Canon Expands Creative Footprint in Rwanda with Launch of Canon Academy Workshops at Kigali Visual Encounters 2025 https://techeconomy.ng/canon-academy-kigali-visual-encounters-2025/ https://techeconomy.ng/canon-academy-kigali-visual-encounters-2025/#respond Mon, 03 Nov 2025 14:12:39 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=170416 Canon Central and North Africa (CCNA) has launched Canon Academy Rwanda, a new initiative designed to provide photographers and videographers with practical, hands-on training.

The workshops, held in partnership with the Kigali Centre for Photography, will take place from October  27–29, 2025, at the Institut Français in Kigali as part of the Kigali Visual Encounters Festival.

The Canon Academy brings a direct, skills-based approach to photography education, moving beyond theory to practical mastery.

It is Canon’s latest investment in nurturing Africa’s creative industries, with a goal to empower young professionals to transform passion into sustainable livelihoods.

According to Rashad Ghani, B2C business unit director at Canon Central and North Africa, “Through the Canon Academy, we’re expanding our reach and impact by making photography training accessible to our customers in Rwanda.

“This collaboration with the Kigali Centre for Photography for the Kigali Visual Encounters Festival represents our commitment to equipping young people and communities with the skills, inspiration, and opportunities they need to succeed in the creative economy.

“It is also a reflection of Canon’s strategic approach to shape Africa’s future through education and innovation.”

Unlike traditional seminars, the Academy’s structure focuses on experiential learning. Participants will receive guided instruction from certified Canon trainers, with each session adapted to different experience levels, from first-time camera users to professionals seeking advanced techniques.

Workshops will cover essential concepts such as composition, lighting, and exposure, followed by outdoor sessions like street photography exercises.

Attendees will work with Canon’s latest mirrorless and DSLR systems, including the R50, R100, R10, and R8, testing the technology in real-world environments.

The hands-on sessions will culminate in the Canon Academy Hangout, where participants will showcase their work, network, and receive formal certification.

Leading the sessions are Jacques Nkinzingabo, founder of the Kigali Centre for Photography, and Raul Gabat, Canon’s business development manager.

Together, they will guide participants through the creative and technical aspects of storytelling through images.

Nkinzingabo said, “The Kigali Centre for Photography serves as a learning and creative space dedicated to advancing photography, visual culture, and artistic practices in Rwanda. The first and only of its kind in Kigali City, it has positioned itself as a hub of creative learning and cultural exchange.

“Through the Kigali Visual Encounters 2025, and in collaboration with Canon, it provides an inclusive, meaningful, and community-driven platform for development.”

Since its inception, Canon Academy has trained over 2,200 students across Africa. The expansion into Rwanda represents a new learning opportunity and also a commendable move to strengthen the region’s creative economy.

Through this initiative, Canon aims to cultivate a new generation of storytellers, individuals who can capture Africa’s realities and ambitions through powerful visual narratives.

Investing in people and education, Canon is aligning with its Kyosei philosophy: “Living and Working Together for the Common Good.” In Kigali, that philosophy takes on a new form, blending artistry, technology, and opportunity to build a stronger creative future.

The Creative Summer School provides a safe and inspiring space where participants develop the skills and confidence to pursue their dreams.

“Partnering with Canon Miraisha allows us to prepare boys not just for careers, but for meaningful lives of leadership.”

The Miraisha Programme, which has already trained over 7,000 young people in 11 African countries, is part of Canon’s broader mission to nurture the next generation of creatives. Its goal is to reach 10,000 beneficiaries by 2030.

Previous collaborations have included projects with Kings & Queens Art Academy in Nigeria, Maono Africa in Kenya, and the Lens on Life Project in Cameroon.

Debra’s Palace Initiative, a non-profit organisation focused on empowering boys, has also recorded strong impact with more than 3,500 participants engaged through its conferences, mentorship tours, and scholarship schemes.

The Creative Summer School is one of its flagship collaborations, aligning with its mission to shape boys into confident and responsible men.

With this latest edition, both Canon and Debra’s Palace Initiative are creating opportunities that extend beyond employment, building a generation of African creatives who can lead, inspire, and drive change in their communities.

Canon Launches Compact Cinema Camera with 7K Power, EOS C50 https://techeconomy.ng/canon-eos-c50-7k-cinema-camera-launch/ https://techeconomy.ng/canon-eos-c50-7k-cinema-camera-launch/#comments Wed, 10 Sep 2025 11:28:57 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=166865 Canon has launched the EOS C50, its smallest Cinema EOS camera till date, designed to serve filmmakers who need both portability and uncompromising image quality.

Unlike previous models, the C50 comes with a new 7K full-frame CMOS sensor paired with the DIGIC DV7 processor. Together, they enable internal RAW video recording at up to 7K 60P, high frame rate shooting at 4K 120P and 2K 180P, and still photography at 32 megapixels.

Another interesting feature is the C50’s open gate recording. This allows filmmakers to use the entire sensor, giving them maximum resolution and creative flexibility.

With the new Full Frame 3:2 mode, the camera can capture footage that takes advantage of the full image circle of full-frame lenses. For those who use anamorphic glass, it produces an immersive, cinematic frame that rivals much larger systems.

Canon has also introduced Simultaneous Crop Recording. Videographers can capture a full-angle image and, at the same time, generate a vertical or square cut optimised for platforms like TikTok or Instagram.

The cropped area can even be shifted for better framing, cutting out extra post-production steps for creators working under tight deadlines.

In terms of usability, the EOS C50 is built to adapt. Its modular design supports handheld use, gimbals, or complex rigs. A detachable handle adds two full-size XLR ports for professional audio, plus direct controls for recording and zoom.

Even if it is mounted horizontally or vertically, the display and interface adjust automatically, a practical feature for today’s mix of traditional and social media production.

Connectivity is another area where Canon has raised the bar. The C50 comes with HDMI, USB-C, XLR, Timecode, and dual card slots for CFexpress and SD, offering multiple recording formats simultaneously. It supports livestreaming via UVC/UAC at up to 60P and includes Canon’s XC Protocol for remote operation.

For cloud-based workflows, it connects directly to Frame.io’s Camera to Cloud service, ensuring proxy files move instantly from set to post-production.

Canon confirmed that the release of the C50 will be followed by firmware updates for other Cinema EOS cameras, including the EOS C400 and C80. These updates will bring new features such as 3:2 open gate RAW recording and enhanced focus tools.

The EOS C50’s specifications include dual base ISO (800/6400), more than 15 stops of dynamic range, and support for multiple professional recording formats including 12-bit Cinema RAW Light, Canon Log 2, Log 3, and XF-HEVC S.

With the 7K power in a body smaller than any Cinema EOS before it, Canon is giving us compact without compromise.

Canon Launches MS-500 Ultra-High-Sensitivity Camera for Advanced Surveillance https://techeconomy.ng/canon-launches-ms-500-ultra-high-sensitivity-camera-for-advanced-surveillance/ https://techeconomy.ng/canon-launches-ms-500-ultra-high-sensitivity-camera-for-advanced-surveillance/#respond Wed, 30 Aug 2023 15:43:17 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=111835 Canon Inc. has launched MS-500, the ultra-high-sensitivity ILC (Interchangeable-Lens Camera) equipped with the 1” SPAD (Single Photon Avalanche Diode) sensor featuring the world’s highest pixel count of 3.2 megapixels1 in late August 2023.

This innovative camera was built to cater to areas requiring the utmost security, such as seaports, public infrastructure facilities, and national borders. The MS-500’s high-precision monitoring capabilities enable accurate target capture even under challenging day and night conditions. Distinguishing itself as the world’s first ultra-high-sensitivity camera equipped with a SPAD sensor for color video shooting, the MS-500 achieves an exceptional minimum subject illumination of a mere 0.001 lux.

By pairing the MS-500 with ultra-telephoto broadcast lenses, users gain the remarkable ability to capture clear, long-range videos of subjects situated several kilometers away, even amidst the darkness of nighttime.

Central to the MS-500’s uniqueness is the utilization of the SPAD sensor, leveraging an advanced technology known as “photon counting.” This method enables the pixel to quantitatively count incoming light particles (photons). Unlike the conventional CMOS sensor’s approach of accumulating light over time, the SPAD sensor instantaneously amplifies incoming photons by approximately 1 million times, translating them into a robust electrical signal.

This distinctive capability ensures even the faintest traces of light are detectable. Further, the digital photon counting process minimizes noise interference during signal readout, a pivotal advantage that facilitates crystal-clear color video capture in environments as dim as 0.001 lux.

The MS-500 seamlessly integrates with a bayonet lens mount, adhering to the widely recognized BTA S-1005B standards, commonly used for broadcast lenses. Canon’s expansive range of broadcast lenses, recognized for their ultra-telephoto performance, augments the camera’s capacity to identify and track subjects situated several kilometers away, even in the depths of nocturnal obscurity.

In situations demanding night monitoring and extended-range surveillance, factors like noise and atmospheric distortions can significantly impact video clarity, especially in low-light settings. To combat these challenges, Canon introduces “CrispImg2,” an image correction function integrated into the custom picture settings.

This feature optimizes sharpness, gamma curve, and noise reduction specifically for monitoring scenarios, ensuring high-visibility videos regardless of the time of day. Furthermore, the Canon MS-500 boasts support for a “haze compensation” function, effectively counteracting the negative effects of haze and mist. By automatically adjusting contrast and implementing image correction, the camera delivers superior video quality.

Again, the MS-500 excels not only in its imaging capabilities but also in its compatibility with serial communication protocols. Canon’s proprietary “NU” protocol, designed for ultra-high-sensitivity cameras and remote cameras, enables seamless remote control of pan/tilt operations and image quality adjustments. Additionally, the camera supports the widely adopted “Pelco-D” protocol, facilitating remote control of remote cameras and pan-tilt heads. Utilizing these protocols will enable users to connect the camera, lens, and pan-tilt head to a control device, granting them remote control and operation capabilities.

The new device combines cutting-edge photon counting technology, advanced image correction functions, and versatile remote control integration, solidifying its position as an indispensable tool for high-precision surveillance in even the most challenging environments.

Another Canon Milestone with the Production of 110 Million EOS Series Cameras https://techeconomy.ng/another-canon-milestone-with-the-production-of-110-million-eos-series-cameras/ https://techeconomy.ng/another-canon-milestone-with-the-production-of-110-million-eos-series-cameras/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2023 11:52:36 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=107475 Canon Inc. has recently achieved two significant production milestones in the world of photography.

In March, Canon reached a cumulative total of 110 million Electro Optical System (EOS) Series interchangeable-lens cameras, and in May, it surpassed 160 million RF/EF series interchangeable lenses.

The 110 millionth EOS series camera produced was the EOS R6 Mark II, which was released in December 2022. This particular model exemplifies Canon’s pursuit of “Speed, Comfort, and High Image Quality.” On the other hand, the 160 millionth interchangeable lens was the RF 100mm F2.8 L MACRO IS USM, introduced in July 2021.

The EOS Series debuted in March 1987 alongside the EF series of interchangeable lenses. It marked the world’s first fully-electronic mount system for silver halide film AF SLR cameras. Since then, Canon has been at the forefront of digital SLR camera innovation, starting with the groundbreaking EOS 300D (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS Kiss Digital) in September 2003. This model revolutionized the industry and paved the way for digital SLR video recording.

Canon’s dedication to expanding the boundaries of visual expression led to the introduction of the next-generation EOS R System in October 2018. By continuously expanding its lineup of attractive products that meet diverse needs, Canon has maintained its position as the world’s number one share leader in digital SLR cameras for over 20 years, from 2003 to 2022. This achievement was further solidified with the production of the 110 millionth EOS series camera in March 2023.

Since the release of the EF lenses in March 1987, Canon has continuously pushed the boundaries of imaging technology. The EF lens lineup has incorporated numerous innovative technologies, including the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, and a multilayered diffractive optical (DO) element.

With the addition of the RF Lens, introduced as part of the EOS R System in 2018, Canon’s lens offerings have expanded to include a total of 115 models. These lenses leverage a large aperture and short-back focus, along with a high-speed signal transmission system, to achieve unprecedented high image quality. The recent celebration of the production of 160 million EOS series interchangeable lenses highlights Canon’s commitment to advancing imaging technology.

Canon remains committed to refining its proprietary imaging technologies and expanding its EOS series along with its RF and EF lens lineup. The company aims to push the boundaries of imaging and contribute to the further development of photographic and video imaging culture.

The EOS series has evolved over the years, with each new model catering to a wide range of user needs. From professionals with the EOS-1 series to entry-level photographers with the EOS 500 (EOS Rebel XS or EOS Kiss), Canon has consistently delivered innovative products. The company’s dedication to visual expression led to the launch of the EOS R System in 2018, which opened new possibilities in photography and video capture.

Canon’s RF and EF lens lineup continues to impress with world-first technologies. The lenses offer exceptional image quality, whether it’s the fast f/2 aperture across the entire zoom range of the RF 28-70mm F2 L USM or the high image quality and portability of the RF 100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM telephoto zoom lens.

With 115 lenses in its RF and EF lineup, Canon caters to a wide range of photography needs. From ultra-wide-angle to super-telephoto lenses, and even lenses for video production, Canon ensures that users have access to the perfect lens for their creative endeavors.

As Canon celebrates these production milestones, the company remains dedicated to advancing imaging technology and meeting the diverse needs of photographers and videographers worldwide.
