Nigeria has the highest number of tech startups in Africa with over 3,360 as of 2024. That’s more than Egypt and Kenya combined!

But again, Africa has the highest entrepreneurial rate globally, with 22% of its working-age adults in the space, yet it also holds the crown for the greatest fear of failure among budding entrepreneurs.

Why the paradox? Perhaps it’s the daily duel with inflation, unstable exchange rates, or even the high stakes of being courageous in an unstable market.

Nevertheless, Africa’s perceived opportunities and credibility are one to commend, creating a system where innovation thrives despite the odds.

Today, we dive into the stories of 10 entrepreneurs to watch in 2025, having gone through challenges, overcame them, and still driving through the rough roads.

These, among many others, are the leaders turning challenges into achievements, from enhancing financial technology to bolstering transport and embracing blockchain as well as cybersecurity innovations.

These entrepreneurs reiterate the fact that Africa isn’t just watching the world evolve, it’s involved in the processes.

Cashwise Finance Launches to Disrupt $20 Billion Remittances Market https://techeconomy.ng/cashwise-finance-launches-to-disrupt-20-billion-remittances-market/ https://techeconomy.ng/cashwise-finance-launches-to-disrupt-20-billion-remittances-market/#respond Fri, 17 Jan 2025 09:15:45 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=151377 Over $20 billion in remittances flow into Nigeria annually, with $553 million just in July 2024, yet millions of Nigerians encounter challenges such as hidden fees, lengthy transaction times, and restrictive platforms.

Tackling this issue requires a consortium of innovators, and Cashwise Finance, a new fintech startup is determined to turn things around in the global remittance space.

If you’ve ever thought scaling through local and international financial transactions was like solving a riddle while blindfolded, Cashwise might just be the answer we’ve all been waiting for.

The official launch of Cashwise Finance brings with it a promise of simplicity, transparency, and cutting-edge solutions aiming to bridge the gap between local and global transactions.

The app, now available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, has rolled out a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) packed with features that bring convenience to international finance.

Including P2P transfers that take out transaction fees within its system, Virtual USD Cards enabling seamless global payments, the platform already sets a high standard.

But what inspired this move? Techeconomy sat down with Elsie Godwin, Co-founder and chief operating officer of Cashwise Finance, to delve deeper into the vision behind the innovation.

Connecting the Dots: The Inspiration Behind Cashwise

At Cashwise Finance, we aim to create financial solutions that genuinely serve and connect people to their money, no matter where they are,” Elsie explained when asked about the platform’s genesis.

The inspiration came from the lived experience of the founders as travellers and recognising the increasing interconnectedness of our global community and the persistent barriers faced in moving money across borders. By combining local and international financial services, we’re addressing a technical challenge and empowering individuals to thrive in a global economy. We envision transforming global remittances by making them faster, more transparent, and accessible—reducing costs and creating a seamless experience for our users.”

This customer-centric ethos is at the heart of Cashwise’s mission.

Overcoming Challenges: USD Cards and Zelle Integration

The unique features of Cashwise include its Virtual USD Card and Zelle functionality—tools that promise great convenience for users sending and receiving money across borders. However, bringing these features to life wasn’t without some obstacles.

Integrating features like the Virtual USD Card and Zelle functionality required navigating technical and regulatory complexities. Ensuring compliance with financial regulations in multiple jurisdictions while maintaining a smooth user experience was vital. We also had to address varying infrastructure capabilities between regions,” Elsie shared.

The result? A solution that meets specific user needs by enabling secure and convenient international transactions through trusted platforms.

Building Trust Through Transparency

One of the most obvious pain points in the financial sector is the lack of pricing transparency. Cashwise aims to change this.

Trust is the foundation of everything we do at Cashwise Finance. From the beginning, we committed to a transparent and fair pricing policy because we understand how frustrating hidden fees can be,” Elsie noted.

The platform ensures users are well-informed about charges and provides tools like real-time notifications on transactions and downloadable card statements. According to Elsie, “Building trust isn’t just about policies; it’s about delivering consistently excellent service and responding to our users’ needs.

Innovating Beyond the MVP

The launch of the MVP is just the first step in what promises to be an exhilarating journey for Cashwise. When asked about the future, Elsie revealed:

As Cashwise Finance evolves, we’re exploring a range of innovations, from AI-driven financial insights to enhanced savings tools that cater to individual and business users. We are also looking forward to expanding into other regions like Europe.

“One area we’re particularly excited about is integrating more robust microfinance features, such as credit-building programmes tailored to our users’ unique circumstances. User feedback will remain at the core of these developments. We’re committed to maintaining an open dialogue with our community, ensuring that every enhancement we introduce aligns with their needs and aspirations.”

And the Regulatory Aspects?

Operating across multiple countries comes with its own set of regulatory challenges. How does Cashwise plan to maintain compliance while ensuring seamless transactions?

Operating in multiple countries requires a proactive and collaborative approach to compliance. At Cashwise Finance, we apply a compliance-first approach. We’ve prioritised forming strong partnerships with regulated financial institutions in each region to ensure we meet all local requirements,” Elsie explained.

The company’s compliance team works to anticipate regulatory changes while leveraging advanced technology to safeguard user transactions. “By focusing on transparency and adaptability, we’re confident in our ability to provide seamless, compliant financial services that meet the diverse needs of our users in Nigeria, the U.S., and beyond,” she added.

Cashwise Finance enters the fintech space with huge plans, aiming to bolster how people send, receive, and manage money.

With its transparent pricing model, innovative features, and focus on user feedback, it seeks to ensure individuals and businesses thrive through interconnectivity.

So, whether you’re shopping globally with Cashwise’s Virtual USD Card or sending money seamlessly to loved ones via Zelle, Cashwise Finance might just be the game-changer the industry has been waiting for.

TechEconomy reached out to Elsie Godwin to find out how she started ELSiEiSY, and the motives behind establishing the blog. She has some words of advice for budding blogging: “Remember the influence you wield”.

Happy anniversary, Elsie!

Elsie Godwin, founder of ElSiEiSY Blog
Elsie Godwin

When asked how it all-started with her blogging, Elsie said:

“Blogging for me started with me wanting to share an unpleasant dating experience. At the time, the dynamics of social media in this part of the world was very different from what it is now. It was the time of lists – published on blogs and driving conversations on twitter.

“There were different well written stories and lists by amazing budding writers who mostly maintained pseudo names.

“My close friends at the time had their own blogs and I needed them to share my story on their blogs but they refused, urging me to start my own blog. Being someone who has always loved a challenge, I took it up, weighed my options between blogspot and wordpress, I chose wordpress and the rest as they say is history.

“Published my first blog post on the 29th of December 2012 and looking back, I believe that was a defining moment for my career path.

What does ELSiEiSY mean?

So my full name is Elsie Isioma Godwin. Elsieisy is the combination of my first and second name. Elsie-isy (Isioma).

As a graduate of computer science, how easy was it for you to switch to blogging? Do you still practise computer science as a course?

“Blogging is a mixture of art and science. You need technology to run a blog. My blog is currently powered on the wordpress platform with the help of a web/software developer. However, having a working knowledge of what happens at the backend of my blog is also important to me. I have to understand decisions we make with things like domain, host, SSL, theme, widget control and so much more as we make them.

“My understanding of digital marketing tools and how to use them is a part of computer science. Marketing is science and the way marketing has evolved over the years creates a field where I have to always interact with technology. My career as a Marketing professional is tech based and being able to use these tools means that I always have to practise.

When asked how she could describe the last 10 years of ELSiEiSY blog, she said:

“The last 10 years have been impactful and rewarding. I have grown in many ways and evolved into the woman that I am now because of my curiosity and thirst for knowledge that I can share – blog. I have found opportunities in researching and learning on the go”.

Elsie said her commitment to the society through EELSiEiSY blog is that it will always support impact projects. “The goal is to provide value through blogging as we help our readers see issues from different perspectives”, she added.

We have seen controversial bloggers, but you chose to be rational and professional?

“I do not see other bloggers as irrational or unprofessional, they just practise a different kind of blogging and it is okay. I only wish that they also create room to promote content that will help maintain our culture and value as well. I have made attempts to change my style of blogging for one reason or the other, but I always fall back to realising that the only type of blogging I can do is blogging for impact.

“It’s a decision which resonates with my thought process and value system. I don’t think it makes me more professional than other bloggers”.

Recently, you graduated from PAU certification programmes with three certificates in the same year… how did you pull that?

“Mahn! I don’t know how I pulled that off. I am thankful to God for what I did. At some point, it felt like I had bitten more than I could possibly chew. I thought that I would not be able to meet the criteria for graduation in one of the courses. But for each new week, God strengthened me and I pulled through. It was tough but necessary. I also have to thank MTN Nigeria for sponsoring one of the programmes on Media Innovation. It’s been a great year!”

What is the next phase for Elsieisy blog?

“I will keep writing, seek out other brilliant minds who would love to write for the blog, look out for ways to diversify content distribution for wider reach and maintain the authenticity of the brand”.

How do you select topics to write or discuss?

“I draw inspiration from the news, trending stories, personal encounters and lived experiences.

It seems you multitask alot because apart from ELSiEiSY blog, you are engaged in other Marketing communications activities…how do you combine these roles?

Lol. I think I am the Queen of multitasking. I also know when to take a break and rest. When I take on a job – full time, part time or contract, it is my responsibility to deliver on that job and my blog takes the back seat. However, I have people who work for and with me on the blog from time to time to ensure that it is kept alive”.

Is blogging a noble job?

“It can be. It depends on who is blogging and what their values are”. Elsie said.0

In her advice to other bloggers, Elsie said:

Vlogger, Blogger, Tiktok, Tiktok video, Videos, Camera

“Remember the influence you wield. To whom much is given, much more is expected. Use your platform to spread more positive than negativity. We can conquer the craze of being driven by clicks and impressions if we choose to”.

…Let’s start with your current role at Cassava Network and the most exciting part of your work

In my role as the Marketing Manager at Cassava Network, I oversee all communication and marketing efforts of the company in Nigeria.

This includes but not limited to directing and reviewing content/design creation for all platforms, driving brand awareness, Partners collaborative marketing efforts, identify communities which helps drive the goal of web3 adoption, relationship management with KOLs and marketing networks, Product launch and Campaign strategies, Online and Physical events, Conversation direction and moderation, identify and deploy right digital tool for campaigns, support product test and development, Public Relations, drive Cassava product growth through sign ups, Avatar creation and adoption.

The most exciting part for me is when I engage with people who have zero understanding of the Web3 ecosystem, the opportunity to break it down in a way that helps them begin to understand Blockchain Technology and its benefits is one that I love to take on anytime.

What has been your most career-defining moment that you are proud of?

For me, defining moments are continuous. In marketing, the measurable results keep you going. Every campaign I have led and executed, gives me a different perspective and understanding of different markets. I am always looking for the next challenge, where my skills can be used and valued. However, I must say that having the opportunity to lead marketing for web2 & Web3 brands has been quite an interesting journey and learning curve for me. I can now say that I have done marketing on both sides of the divide.

What challenges have you faced in the workplace, especially your experience in male-dominated environments?

I think that the challenges I face are true to the job and the leadership roles I occupy. The energy is always high and ideas have to be managed. Beyond that, the men in my life – friends, mentors, bosses, have all been very helpful especially during my transition phases.

They help me overcome imposter syndrome and sometimes I think that they believe in me more than I do myself. Over all, it’s just important to know when to stay put and when it’s time to move to the next phase of your journey. There is time and season for everything; time to learn and time to fly.

I have been lucky to grow in my career in a way that I get to negotiate my terms and conditions of work from a place of strength. Bringing value to the table is my number one priority and this means that I do everything to give my best to any company I work for and with. And like I said, upskilling is a way of life for me. Which is why this year, I pushed myself so hard to get three certificates from Pan Atlantic University.

In your opinion, what is the biggest obstacle to women’s career progression?

I think that women want to be perfect for a role before they apply. We constantly underestimate and undervalue ourselves. Personally, I am learning that we all learn on the job. I have had the opportunity to listen to people I respect in different fields whether through reading their books or attending a session where they were kind enough to share and one thing is common – for every growth, for every new role, you have to learn on the job.

With a value first mindset, a willingness to learn and personal investments, the sky is the starting point for any woman.

What would you recommend to any company regarding infrastructure to develop the best talent?

The world is changing and people are the heart of great ideas. It’s important to create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

Give room for ideas sharing, identify the area of strength of your team members and find creative and nurturing ways to maximise it for the growth of the company. If you want to keep and retain your talents, you must value them right and be willing to do the job.

What do you think we should be doing to encourage more girls to consider a career in tech?

Before now, I would have said that we are already doing a lot in terms of outreach, initiatives and providing pathways and opportunities for girls in tech.

But I recently visited Kano state for Adaverse/Cardano’s Blockchain event where I was a guest speaker and that experience changed my perspective which I wrote about on my blog. We need to create more initiatives but beyond that, we have to creatively fine tune these initiatives in ways that align with the culture of different regions.

There are platforms already making efforts to help eradicate the peculiar challenges and barriers for girls to consider a career in tech such as Cybersafe Foundation, but more needs to be done and tailored for each region.

Is there one piece of advice you wish somebody gave you at the beginning of your career?

I was told that my work will speak for me but now, I wish I was told to actively blow my own trumpet. It’s now a digital village which means that your next door neighbour or your team member is no longer your competition.

These days, we apply for a role alongside hundreds of people from different parts of the world. It’s important to stand out through verifiable digital footprints and skillset.

It’s important to position yourself for recognition and growth while upskilling and working with a collaborative mindset.

Cassava Network Launches AfriMyth Avatars to Onboard Millions of African Users to Web3 https://techeconomy.ng/cassava-network-launches-afrimyth-avatars-to-onboard-millions-of-african-users-to-web3/ https://techeconomy.ng/cassava-network-launches-afrimyth-avatars-to-onboard-millions-of-african-users-to-web3/#comments Thu, 29 Sep 2022 13:00:00 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=84536 Cassava Network, a Web3 rewards infrastructure protocol, today launched the first version of their Web3 DApp alongside their AfriMyth Avatar collection.

The Avatars, inspired by pan-African mythology, are the foundation for Cassava’s upcoming Cassava ID rewards system that seeks to introduce millions of Africans to Web3 through partnerships with existing Web2 apps.

Cassava Network aims to harness the growing interest in blockchain technology across Africa by creating a stepping stone for users to enter the world of cryptocurrencies and Web3.

Developers can implement the Cassava rewards protocol into their existing apps, and in doing so reward their users while also introducing them to the possibilities of Web3 through Cassava.

The first version of Cassava’s DApp allows users to create an AfriMyth Avatar, which will later represent a soul-bound token that supports Cassava’s rewards infrastructure. For now, users only need an email address to create their avatar, opening the door for non-crypto users to begin exploring what Web3 has to offer.

Users can visit Cassava’s website today to begin exploring both AfriMyth and the broader Cassava ecosystem, which will include a powerful, all-in-one wallet for crypto, DeFi, and NFTs.

To help support the launch, Cassava Network will airdrop Rare-tier NFTs to the first 2,000 users who create an AfriMyth Avatar.

These NFTs will play a role in the upcoming rewards system, allowing users to modify their reward potential by equipping different upgrades to their Avatars.

“With AfriMyth, we’re paying tribute to the rich and diverse peoples and their stories from across Africa and sharing them with the world,” says Mouloukou Sanoh, Co-founder of Cassava Network. “It’s also the first step on our journey toward widespread Web3 adoption as we look to roll out Cassava’s Web3 infrastructure over the coming months and year.”

Elsie Godwin, Marketing Manager at Cassava Network, continued: “Cassava is bringing Web3 to an entire continent via our rewards infrastructure. Games, news apps, music streaming services, social networks and more can all implement Cassava rewards, allowing developers to bridge their existing apps to Web3 without starting from zero. This also means users can begin earning rewards by using the apps they already love to use.”

Africa is quickly becoming one of the most important sectors for blockchain, with adoption rates and interest surging across the continent. Nigeria in particular has emerged as a significant market, with Chainalysis reporting that more than 32% of Nigerians owned or used cryptocurrencies.

To capture this booming market, Cassava Network has been busy forming partnerships with leading Web2 apps in Africa, including steaming giant Boomplay, news platform Scooper, and social network Vskit. Combined, these apps have hundreds of millions of daily active users, presenting an incredible opportunity to onboard users quickly to Cassava.

Cassava recently closed a US $8 million funding round led by Everest Ventures Group, the EMURGO-backed Adaverse, and Dragonfly Capital. Their native token, $CSV, is slated for release in late Q4, 2022.
