Scheduled to take place in Enugu State, this year’s conference is themed: “Code, Capital and Compliance: Unlocking Nigeria’s iGaming Tech Opportunity.”

As Nigeria’s gaming industry undergoes a structural transformation driven by decentralised regulation, digital innovation, and increased investor interest, EGC 2026 will serve as a critical convening point for stakeholders across the ecosystem.

The conference will bring together regulators, gaming operators, technology providers, investors, fintech leaders, legal experts, and policymakers to engage in high-level discussions that will shape the future of gaming in Nigeria.

With a deliberate national outlook and a strategic regional focus, EGC 2026 is uniquely positioned as the gateway to the South East gaming market, one of the most dynamic and under-leveraged regions in Nigeria’s gaming landscape.

The South East, led by Enugu State’s progressive regulatory approach, is fast emerging as a hub for gaming innovation, compliance-driven operations, and structured market expansion.

The conference will spotlight this regional opportunity, offering stakeholders direct access to market insights, regulatory frameworks, and partnership pipelines specific to the zone.

“EGC 2026 is not just a conference; it is a market entry platform,” said Prince Arinze Arum, the Executive Secretary and CEO, Enugu State Gaming and Lotteries Commission, co-organizers of the event. “For operators and technology companies looking to expand into Nigeria, particularly the South East, this event provides unmatched access to regulators, local partners, and actionable intelligence required to navigate the ecosystem effectively.”

The 2026 edition will feature:

  • Strategic keynote sessions addressing national policy direction, digital transformation, and regulatory decentralisation.
  • High-impact panel discussions on compliance, data protection, fintech integration, and responsible gaming.
  • Specialized sessions with regulatory bodies and enforcement agencies, providing clarity on licensing, taxation, and operational requirements across states.
  • Investor and operator roundtables focused on unlocking capital flows and scaling gaming businesses within Nigeria.
  • Exhibitions and tech showcases highlighting cutting-edge gaming technologies and solutions tailored to the Nigerian market.

A major highlight of EGC 2026 will be its emphasis on compliance as a growth enabler, particularly in a post-centralized regulatory environment.

Participants will gain practical insights into navigating Nigeria’s fragmented regulatory structure while leveraging technology to drive efficiency, transparency, and trust.

The conference will also reinforce Enugu State’s role as a pioneer in structured gaming regulation at the sub-national level. Through deliberate policy frameworks and stakeholder engagement, the state continues to demonstrate how regional markets can drive national industry growth.

For international stakeholders, EGC 2026 offers a unique opportunity to understand Nigeria beyond headline metrics, providing nuanced perspectives on regional market dynamics, consumer behavior, and localized regulatory requirements.

As the Nigerian gaming sector continues to expand, EGC 2026 stands out as a must-attend event for any organization seeking relevance, market entry, or expansion within the industry.

The Real Jackpot: Why Nigeria is Making Money from Bets, But Missing Billions from Technology https://techeconomy.ng/the-real-jackpot-why-nigeria-is-making-money-from-bets-but-missing-billions-from-technology/ https://techeconomy.ng/the-real-jackpot-why-nigeria-is-making-money-from-bets-but-missing-billions-from-technology/#respond Fri, 17 Apr 2026 13:42:17 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=180020 Let’s start with an uncomfortable truth: Nigeria is making money from gaming, but not nearly as much as it should.

On the surface, the industry looks healthy. With a young, mobile-first population and a deep appetite for sports and digital entertainment, gaming has grown into a significant contributor to economic activity.

From bustling kiosks to seamless mobile platforms, the evidence is everywhere: Nigerians are playing, and paying.

But beneath that activity lies a quieter reality.

We are earning from the act of gaming, not from the architecture behind it.

And that is where the real jackpot is being missed.

The global gaming industry does not generate its biggest returns from bets alone. It thrives on platforms, on the software, systems, and infrastructure that power the entire experience. Gaming engines, payment orchestration, fraud detection tools, compliance frameworks, these are the layers where value compounds.

In Nigeria, most of these layers are still imported.

Which means that while local operators generate revenue and governments collect taxes, a significant share of long-term value is exported through licensing fees, foreign technologies, and external dependencies.

It’s a classic case of participating in the market without owning the engine.

Interestingly, this is not unfamiliar territory. Nigeria has seen this pattern before, and broken it. In fintech, the country moved from relying on foreign systems to building solutions now used across Africa. What changed was not talent, but focus.

Gaming now sits at that same crossroads.

Because the truth is, Nigeria already has the ingredients needed to build globally relevant gaming technology. A large and engaged user base.

A fast-evolving regulatory landscape. And perhaps most importantly, a generation of developers accustomed to solving complex, real-world problems, from unstable networks to fragmented payment systems.

These are not limitations. They are exportable insights.

Yet, instead of packaging these solutions into scalable products, the industry largely deploys them locally and stops there. The result is growth without depth, activity without full value capture.

And that comes at a cost.

Every imported platform is a missed opportunity for local innovation. Every external system reinforces dependence. Over time, it limits not just revenue potential, but strategic control.

Because in technology, the real power lies not in usage, but in ownership.

To shift this trajectory, the industry must begin to think beyond operations. Regulation remains important, but it cannot be the endgame.

The conversation must expand to include technology development, investment in local platforms, and stronger collaboration between regulators, operators, and builders.

Encouragingly, this shift is beginning to surface in industry conversations, especially within platforms like the Enugu Gaming Conference, where the narrative is slowly evolving from compliance to creation.

The question now is whether that momentum will translate into action.

Because while Nigeria continues to make money from bets, the real opportunity lies elsewhere, hidden in the systems we have yet to build, and the markets we have yet to serve.

In the end, the real jackpot isn’t in the bets being placed. It’s in the technology the world is waiting to buy.

The Real Value of Gaming to Nigeria’s Growing Economy https://techeconomy.ng/the-real-value-of-gaming-to-nigerias-growing-economy/ https://techeconomy.ng/the-real-value-of-gaming-to-nigerias-growing-economy/#respond Thu, 07 Aug 2025 19:19:57 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=164618 When the curtains fell on the 2nd Enugu Gaming Conference 2025, one message stood clear: gaming in Nigeria is no longer an informal sector hanging by regulatory threads, it is a fast-rising economic force.

Held under the theme “From Unification to Diversification: Shaping Nigeria’s Gaming Future,” the conference served as both a mirror and a map. It reflected how far we’ve come and pointed boldly toward where we’re headed.

Once viewed solely through the lens of lotteries and sports betting, gaming in Nigeria is now morphing into something bigger and more structured, diversified verticals, unified data systems, interstate collaborations, and a wave of innovation that goes well beyond picking lucky numbers.

If the goal is to grow a resilient, digitally driven economy, gaming is not just a player, it’s a team captain.

At the Enugu conference, state regulators, operators, fintech innovators, and policy wonks gathered not merely to pat themselves on the back, but to wrestle with the complex question: How do we move from a fragmented regulatory environment to a harmonized yet diverse gaming ecosystem that benefits all? The answers weren’t always simple, but they were insightful.

You only had to sit through the fireside chats and breakout sessions to see the big picture. One discussion focused on how states are beginning to localize gaming laws while still aligning with national frameworks, creating room for innovation without losing grip on control. Another panel laid bare the hidden job chains in gaming: app developers, call center agents, payment gateway engineers, gaming influencers, and even event planners, all part of a thriving, under-celebrated ecosystem.

And of course, the money talks. Nigeria’s gaming industry is estimated to generate upwards of ₦450 billion annually. But beyond revenue, what makes gaming economically invaluable is its accessibility.

Enugu Gaming Conference 2025
Enugu Gaming Conference 2025

Unlike oil rigs or tech unicorns, gaming businesses can sprout with modest capital and scale rapidly, employing youths, driving digital adoption, and generating taxes without importing complex machinery.

One speaker, with admirable wit, remarked: “In Nigeria, gaming doesn’t just diversify the economy, it diversifies dreams.”

From a small POS booth in Nsukka to a blockchain-based lottery startup in Lagos, the reach is broad, and the potential is breathtaking.

But we’re not there yet. The sector still wrestles with regulatory turf wars, operator licensing conflicts, and societal misconceptions. However, the Enugu Gaming Conference showed that unity of purpose, even among diverse interests, is possible, and necessary.

This is just the beginning. As this weekly column takes off, we’ll explore the depth and width of Nigeria’s gaming revolution, its people, its policies, its pitfalls, and its potential.

So to those still asking, “Is gaming really that important?” this column replies, watch this space.

Gaming isn’t Nigeria’s side hustle. It’s part of its economic backbone.

Enugu Pushes for Gaming Sector Leadership with Regulatory Overhaul, Tech Innovations, and Social Responsibility Drive https://techeconomy.ng/enugu-pushes-for-gaming-sector-leadership-at-conference/ https://techeconomy.ng/enugu-pushes-for-gaming-sector-leadership-at-conference/#respond Wed, 30 Jul 2025 23:00:26 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=164072 In a commendable statement of intent, the Enugu State Government has asserted its goal to become Nigeria’s gaming innovation capital, backed by a solid mix of technology-driven oversight, transparent regulation, and a strong emphasis on social responsibility.

At the 2025 Enugu Gaming Conference, held at the International Conference Centre, the Governor’s address, Dr Peter Mbah, delivered by the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Dr Nathaniel Urama, noted the state’s strategic pivot towards gaming as a tool for economic growth.

This administration is working to reclaim Enugu not only as a government of substance but as an investment hub within Africa,” the Governor said in his welcome address.

Themed “From Unification to Diversification: Shaping Nigeria’s Gaming Future,” the conference brought together stakeholders, tech innovators, regulators, and investors from across the continent.

Enugu Gaming Conference
Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Dr Nathaniel Urama, representing the Governor

According to the Governor, “We are living in a time where the future of gaming will be determined by how well we harmonise innovation, regulation, expansion, responsibility and investment.”

Enugu’s leadership is backing words with action, and over the past year, the state has rolled out a range of initiatives that go beyond token regulation.

At the heart of these measures is an automated licensing and operator registration portal, a secure digital platform that allows real-time tracking and evaluation of gaming operators.

This innovation drastically reduces manual interference, minimises the risk of fraud, and ensures compliance with our gaming norms,” the Governor stated.

Equally important is the deployment of a Central Monitoring System (CMS) for virtual and retail gaming activities. This system allows the state to monitor gaming transactions in real time, aiming to improve transparency in revenue declarations and tax compliance; an area notoriously murky in the Nigerian gaming sector.

But the state’s vision is not limited to digital as Enugu is also taking a firm stance on ethics.

Enugu Gaming Conference 2025

In Enugu State, our administration fully recognises the growing influence of the gaming and lottery industry as a driver of job creation, digital innovation…

“But even more importantly, we understand the need for a regulatory environment that is transparent, secure and investment-friendly, one that supports legitimate operators while protecting the interests of players and the broader society.”

In a particularly interesting move, the government recently launched a public awareness campaign to tackle underage gambling, aligning its digital reforms with a human-centred policy approach.

This initiative speaks directly to our commitment to social responsibility and public welfare, ensuring that the economic benefits of gaming do not come at the cost of the next generation,” the Governor said.

To better achieve its goals, the state plans to deploy a GPS-based operator mapping and audit system. This tool will allow the commission to geo-locate all gaming outlets in the state and analyse operator data to detect illegal operations and enforce compliance in a smarter way.

These initiatives are not isolated, as they are aligned with our broader agenda of digitally driven governance, ease of doing business, and a modernised economy where transparency, accountability and efficiency are the norm,” the address stated.

While many Nigerian states are wrestling with the implications of the Supreme Court ruling that granted them power to regulate gaming activities within their jurisdictions, Enugu is already racing ahead, readying itself with digital infrastructure, legislative tools, and a public service mindset.

Enugu State is open for business, and we are building a regulatory framework that invites innovation while preserving integrity,” the Governor said.

Gov. Mbah Harps on Technology, Decentralisation as Key Drivers for Nigerian Gaming Industry https://techeconomy.ng/gov-mbah-technology-decentralisation-enugu-gaming-conference/ https://techeconomy.ng/gov-mbah-technology-decentralisation-enugu-gaming-conference/#respond Wed, 30 Jul 2025 21:30:42 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=164065 Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, has highlighted technology and decentralisation of regulatory powers as key to the development and growth of the Nigerian gaming industry.

Mbah spoke during the opening of the second and 2025 edition of the Enugu Gaming Conference organised by the Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission, at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, on Wednesday.

The two-day Conference, which has “From Unification to Diversification: Shaping Nigeria’s Gaming Future” as its theme, is part of the resolve of the Enugu State Government to shape and grow the state’s gaming industry.

Dr. Mbah represented by the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Nathaniel Urama, emphasised the transformative potential of the gaming industry as a catalyst for job creation and economic growth.

He commended the Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission for organising the Conference, which focuses on issues such as the movement from a centralised to decentralised regulatory architecture, reiterated his administration’s commitment to revolutionising the gaming sector through technological, innovation, and robust regulation.

Over the past year, the Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission has taken giant strides in regulatory transformation and I am proud to share that we have invested in cutting-edge digital infrastructure aimed at raising the bar for regulatory excellence.

“At the heart of this transformation is the Automated License Verification and Operator Registration Portal, a secure intelligence system that enables real-time tracking, licensing, and validation of gaming operators across the state.

“This innovation has drastically reduced manual interference, minimised the risk of fraud, and ensure compliance with our gaming laws,” he stated.

He further announced plans to roll out advanced technologies and awareness campaigns to promote responsible gaming, protect vulnerable communities, and eliminate underage gambling in Enugu State.

Speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prince Arinze Arum, underscored the evolving nature of the industry, noting that the conversion had been elevated.

We must be honest with ourselves: the Nigerian gaming industry is at a critical juncture. The conversations are no longer just about enforcement or revenue generation. They are now about jurisdiction, innovation, technology, cross-border collaborations, and most importantly, structure,” he said.

Arum stressed on the need for a decentralised regulatory framework tailored to local realities and economic priorities while maintaining synergy between state-level commissions and federal institutions.

Unification gave us a framework. Diversification now demands that we tailor that framework to local realities, economic priorities, and constitutional responsibilities,” he emphasised.

The National Commissioner of the National Data Protection Commission, Vincent Olatunji, who was represented by Alexander Owen, stressed the importance of privacy, security, and compliance in shaping the future of gaming.

He advocated for robust age verification processes on gaming platforms to protect minors and warned that personal data collection must be consensual and limited to what is necessary for platform operations.

Meanwhile, the Enugu Gaming Conference underscores the state’s resolve to grow and structure the gaming and lotto industry, leveraging technology and innovation to drive economic development while ensuring responsible and regulated practices.

Enugu Gaming Conference 2025: Shaping Nigeria’s Gaming Future from the South East https://techeconomy.ng/enugu-gaming-conference-2025-shaping-nigerias-gaming-future-from-the-south-east/ https://techeconomy.ng/enugu-gaming-conference-2025-shaping-nigerias-gaming-future-from-the-south-east/#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2025 12:52:01 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=156873 The Enugu Gaming Conference 2025, scheduled to hold on July 30th and 31st at the prestigious International Conference Centre, Enugu, is set to be one of the most influential gatherings in Nigeria’s gaming industry calendar.

With the theme “From Unification to Diversification – Shaping Nigeria’s Gaming Future,” this year’s edition is positioned to drive a deeper dialogue on the trajectory of gaming regulation, technology, investment, and inclusion in the Nigerian and African context.

A Booming Industry in Transition

Nigeria’s gaming sector has experienced rapid growth in recent years. According to the National Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), over 60 million Nigerians are actively engaged in gaming, and the industry generates more than ₦730 billion annually. The proliferation of smartphones, increased internet penetration, and a youthful demographic have been major drivers of this boom.

A 2024 report by KPMG Africa highlighted Nigeria as Africa’s fastest-growing gaming market, with revenues crossing $185 million in 2022, outpacing markets like Kenya and South Africa in digital game adoption. The need for policy alignment, innovation, and a localized approach to regulation is becoming increasingly apparent—hence the critical timing of the Enugu Gaming Conference 2025.

Enugu’s Emerging Gaming Ecosystem

Backed by the Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission (ESGC) and the government of Governor Peter Mbah, the Enugu Gaming Conference is a platform for strategic positioning of Enugu State as the epicenter of responsible, tech-driven gaming in Nigeria. The government’s economic transformation blueprint envisions a GDP increase from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, with the gaming and digital entertainment sectors identified as key contributors.

According to Prince Arinze Arum, Executive Secretary/CEO of ESGC, “The Enugu Gaming Conference is more than just a gathering. It’s a statement of intent by Enugu State to harness gaming for economic development, tech innovation, youth engagement, and regional leadership. This year’s theme reflects the critical need to shift from a centralized, fragmented market to a diversified, collaborative ecosystem.”

A National Impact with Regional Emphasis

While the event is hosted in the South East, its implications are national. Nigeria used to operate a dual gaming regulation system—federal and state-led—often causing overlapping mandates.

The 2025 conference will provide a forum to show how the system has been structured to align interests between operators, regulators, technology providers, investors, and legal experts based on a landmark Supreme Court ruling of 2024 that excluded the federal as regulators in the industry.

Key highlights of the conference include:

Panel Discussions on Regulation & Policy: Focused on decentralization and the evolving role of state regulatory agencies.

Technology & Innovation Showcases: Featuring emerging solutions in gaming software, compliance tech, payment systems, and consumer protection.

Investment Pitches & Stakeholder Forums: Designed to connect investors with high-growth gaming startups and projects.

Exhibitions: Local and international companies will showcase products and services across betting, lottery, esports, and casual gaming.

Economic, Social and Technological Value

The potential impact of this year’s conference is multi-dimensional. From a job creation and investment attraction perspective, the event is expected to strengthen Enugu’s economy and attract inflows across tourism, hospitality, tech infrastructure, and creative services.

Importantly, the conference also champions responsible gaming, addressing key issues such as addiction, data privacy, youth exposure, and social awareness. ESGC has been intentional in aligning with other state commissions to promote ethical standards across platforms.

Conclusion

With over 1,000 expected participants, including policymakers, business leaders, developers, legal experts, and international observers, the Enugu Gaming Conference 2025 is not just another industry event—it is a strategic intervention aimed at shaping the future of gaming in Nigeria.

As the theme suggests, the path forward is not unification for its own sake, but strategic diversification that empowers every region and stakeholder to contribute meaningfully.

Enugu Gaming Conference: A Platform for Investors-Operators’ Handshake – Prince Arum https://techeconomy.ng/enugu-gaming-conference-2025/ https://techeconomy.ng/enugu-gaming-conference-2025/#comments Mon, 24 Mar 2025 15:07:05 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=155474 Enugu State is already establishing itself as the leading destination for gaming tourism in Nigeria.

The highly anticipated Enugu Gaming Conference 2025 is set to take place at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Independence Layout, on 30th and 31st July, Techeconomy can report.

Organized by the Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission (ESGC), the conference will bring together industry stakeholders to explore new opportunities and collaborations within the gaming sector.

Prince Arinze Arum, the executive secretary/CEO of the Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission (ESGC), told Techeconomy that the conference is building on the successes of the inaugural edition in 2024.

He said the Commission has already keyed into the vision of the State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s vision to set the State on productive economic trajectory.

In his words:

“Enugu Gaming Conference birthed in 2024 as a gathering of industry stakeholders; for key players to come and take a look at new innovation in the industry and by extension, the southeast market. How they take advantage of the growing market in this region.

“So, this year, we are offering unique opportunities to these players, again to have handshake with stakeholders in this market and even meet their customers.

“It is like a gaming festival. It is unique in the sense that is aimed at promoting local content. They all focus on the future of gaming starting from the grassroots.

“Those who want to scale up also need ideas and handholding to do that”.

Prince Arum extended invitation to critical stakeholder to come take advantage of the market, “meet young innovators in the State that have localized their ideas with the mindset of attracting global audience”.

Techeconomy can report that Enugu Gaming Conference seeks to build a bridge between local game developers and the big companies; the venture capitalists, the finances, the investors and the big operators, as well as the international gaming operators who are looking to expand to new market.

“Enugu is open to investors; this time, gaming companies and operators, payment gateway providers”, the Executive Secretary said.

Speaking further, he said “The conference was also conceived to play a key role in fulfilling His Excellency’s campaign promise and his ambition. His vision, which every appointee must work towards actualizing: To take our dear State’s GDP, from what it was when he came in $4.4billion, to $30 billion economy.

“Now, gaming and lottery as an industry, is unique in itself, and it has steadily been improving. This conference is aimed at driving investments in gaming and such investments come with ripple effects in the economy.

“The more foreign direct investment (FDI) you attract, which the conference aims to achieve by showcasing what we have to offer in terms of gaming, in terms of entertainment, and tourism, which, as you know, they have a nexus, it’s all part of connecting the dots towards the $30 billion economy, which His Excellency has promised.
