The company said the feature works through a new command-line interface tool, now in beta, which connects Spotify with external coding agents such as OpenAI’s Codex, Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenClaw.

Users can generate private audio briefings or podcast-style content from notes, schedules, articles and other personal material, then listen to them inside the Spotify app.

Spotify also explained that the podcasts will remain private and do not appear for other users on the platform.

People are already starting to use their agents to create personal audio that guides their day: from summaries of class notes before an exam to briefings of what’s on their calendar. And they’re asking for a way to listen to it on Spotify, where they already listen to everything else,” the company said in a blog post.

The tool lets users create different types of audio content depending on what they need. Someone preparing for work can generate a short morning briefing with meeting reminders, weather updates and podcast suggestions for their commute.

A student studying philosophy could also create weekly audio lessons based on saved notes, articles and research material.

Users who already work with coding agents on desktop can install the beta tool through its GitHub page. After signing into Spotify through a browser, they can write prompts describing the kind of podcast they want and ask the agent to save it directly to their Spotify account.

For example, a user could request an audio session explaining the history of the World Cup, including major players, host countries and details about this year’s tournament. The system then creates the podcast and adds it to the user’s library with a Spotify link for playback.

The company further noted that the feature is available to eligible Free and Premium users globally, although limits may apply during the testing period.

Spotify plans to continue adjusting the personal podcasts experience as it receives feedback from listeners and expands the beta programme.

OpenAI Develops GitHub Rival as $840bn Valuation Spurs Expansion https://techeconomy.ng/openai-develops-github-rival-code-hosting-platform/ https://techeconomy.ng/openai-develops-github-rival-code-hosting-platform/#respond Wed, 04 Mar 2026 08:03:54 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=177153 OpenAI is building its own code-hosting platform that could compete directly with GitHub, according to a report by The Information.

The project is still in its early stages but people familiar with the matter say it may take months before it is ready.

Engineers at OpenAI began exploring the idea after repeated service disruptions on GitHub in recent months disrupted their work. Those outages forced internal teams to reassess how much they rely on external platforms.

From what has been reported, OpenAI has discussed offering the repository as a paid service to its existing customers. That would place it in direct competition with GitHub, which is owned by Microsoft.

Neither OpenAI nor Microsoft has publicly confirmed the plan. The companies did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publication.

If OpenAI moves forward, the decision would test its relationship with Microsoft. The software giant is one of OpenAI’s biggest backers and also controls GitHub, which serves more than 100 million developers worldwide. A competing product from OpenAI would be a rare overlap in their commercial interests.

In February 2026, OpenAI closed a $110 billion funding round that valued the company at $840 billion. Investors in that raise included Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank.

The deal stands among the largest private capital raises to date and places OpenAI ahead of competitors such as Anthropic and Inflection in valuation terms.

For now, the proposed platform is still under development, with OpenAI still weighing whether to build more of its own infrastructure rather than depend on tools owned by partners.

10 Side Projects That Can Make You Money (or Land You a Job) in Tech https://techeconomy.ng/10-side-projects-in-tech/ https://techeconomy.ng/10-side-projects-in-tech/#respond Mon, 30 Jun 2025 11:00:52 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=162059 We’re well past the point where side projects are just “nice-to-haves.” They’re now your portfolio, your proof of work, and sometimes, your paycheck.

While 80% of side hustlers say they just want to earn more, others are driven by a deeper urge of freedom, ownership, and the chance to create on their own terms.

Nonetheless, only 34% of job seekers in tech actively work on side projects, despite the fact that hiring managers are scanning portfolios and GitHub pages before they even look at your CV.

In our Macro Monday discussion today, we’re not recycling vague advice. These are practical, field-tested projects people are using right now to build wealth, gain skills, and land roles. Smart work that pays off.

Project Categories at a Glance

To make it easier, we’ve grouped these into four core types:

  • 🛠 Build Something Useful – Tools, products, or platforms
  • 🎨 Create & Share Content – Blogs, tutorials, newsletters
  • 💼 Offer a Service – Freelance, contract, consulting
  • 🤖 Use Smart Tools – AI-powered or automated hacks

You don’t need to pick one lane. In fact, over 50% of side hustlers juggle three or more projects. Let’s dive in.

10 Side Projects Worth Your Time

1. Build a Chrome Extension That Solves One Frustrating Problem

What it is: Identify a pain point (e.g. LinkedIn limits, auto-refresh for crypto trackers), then create a small extension that fixes it.
Monetisation: Offer a free version, then upsell features.
Real example: Many developers have built Chrome tools that now passively earn them hundreds monthly via Gumroad.
Start here: Learn the basic Chrome APIs, use JavaScript, and publish to the Web Store.

2. Turn Your Resume into a One-Page Portfolio Site

What it is: Convert your CV into a personal webpage showcasing work, skills, links, and testimonials.
Job impact: Instant credibility. Recruiters Google you; give them something to find.
Visibility: Include GitHub links, project demos, or blog posts.
Start here: Use templates from tools like Framer or Notion, or host a static site via GitHub Pages.

3. Write a Weekly Newsletter in Your Niche

What it is: Share insights, curations, or experiments in tech, design, or writing.
Monetisation: After building a subscriber base, offer sponsorships or premium content.
Job angle: Writing forces clarity and attracts employers who care about communication.
Start here: Substack, Beehiiv, or even LinkedIn Newsletters.

4. Contribute to an Open Source Project

What it is: Improve, document, or bug-fix public codebases.
Credibility: Shows team skills, code quality, and real-world impact.
Networking: Maintainers and contributors often refer each other for jobs.
Start here: Use GitHub’s “Good First Issue” label to onboard quickly.

5. Build and Sell Notion or Figma Templates

What it is: Create digital templates people can use for productivity, design, or content planning.
Income: List them on marketplaces or your own site. Some sellers earn $500–$2,000/month.
No code needed: Just good design thinking and problem solving.
Start here: Browse the most downloaded templates, then create your own twist.

6. Join and Win a Hackathon (Even a Virtual One)

What it is: Build a product or prototype over a few days with a team or solo.
Value: Recognition, cash prizes, and sometimes direct job offers.
Resume boost: Demonstrates speed, collaboration, and initiative.
Start here: Sites like Devpost, MLH, and AngelHack list ongoing events globally.

7. Start a Micro SaaS That Solves a Niche Problem

What it is: A simple subscription-based tool built for a narrow audience.
Earnings: Many devs earn $1k–$5k/month from solo tools.
Scalability: Low overhead, high leverage.
Start here: Solve a workflow issue in your industry. Build in public for feedback.

8. Create an Open Source API Wrapper

What it is: Wrap a complex or poorly documented API (e.g. government data, crypto, niche SaaS) into something easier to use.
Impact: Developers appreciate great wrappers—your repo might go viral.
Job bonus: Shows backend and API fluency, which hiring managers love.
Start here: Pick an API, write the wrapper, document it clearly, and share.

9. Design and Sell Developer-Themed Merchandise

What it is: Funny t-shirts, coding mugs, niche stickers, even physical zines.
Earnings: Print-on-demand means zero upfront costs.
Branding: Build a small community and turn it into a brand.
Start here: Use Teespring or Redbubble, promote on Reddit or Dev.to.

10. Launch a Free Tool That Solves a Micro-Pain

What it is: A tiny website, calculator, or widget that does one thing well.
Why it works: Low barrier to build, high value if done right.
Examples: Colour palette generators, Markdown previewers, habit trackers.
Start here: Identify what you Google for regularly, then build it yourself.

Bonus: Stack Your Side Projects

One side project can turn into a whole ecosystem. Your Chrome extension gets you newsletter subscribers. Your newsletter feeds into your micro SaaS. Your micro SaaS becomes your main income.

This is how people are building tech careers that don’t depend entirely on job boards or HR filters. It’s all about creating your own momentum.

Just Start

Most people overthink this. You don’t need VC funding or perfect skills. You just need to start.

In 2025, spending 11–16 hours per week on a side project can translate into $16–23/hour or even more over time. For those of us in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, where online gig work is becoming more common, this isn’t just a trend, it’s a strategy and a growth path to thrive.

Choose one idea. Build fast. Ship often. You never know which project will open the next door.

Which of these projects are you most likely to start? Hit reply, comment, or share it with someone who’s stuck. Your future job, or income stream, might be waiting on the other side of a weekend build.

GitHub to Layoff 10% of Staff as it goes Fully Remote https://techeconomy.ng/github-to-layoff-10-of-staff-as-it-goes-fully-remote/ https://techeconomy.ng/github-to-layoff-10-of-staff-as-it-goes-fully-remote/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2023 12:15:53 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=95564 GitHub is laying off 10% of its almost 3,000 staff as it goes fully remote.

The Microsoft-owned company is also moving to Teams for its video conferencing needs and moving its laptop refresh cycle from three to four years in a bid to cut costs.

In an email to the staff, Thomas Dohmke, CEO, GitHub wrote: “Today, we are announcing a number of difficult decisions, including saying goodbye to some Hubbers and enacting new budgetary realignments, designed to protect the short-term health of our business while also granting us the capacity to invest in our long-term strategy. With great respect for Hubbers, I first want to be clear about why we are making these decisions and what it means for GitHub’s future.

Sustained growth is important for every business. For GitHub, this means that we continue to enable more productive developers across the globe and move quickly as our opportunities to help our customers change.

Today, we are the home of 100M developers, and we must become the developer-first engineering system for the world of tomorrow. The age of AI has started and we have been leading this change with GitHub Copilot, our most successful product launch to date. We have an enormous opportunity to build an integrated, AI-powered GitHub with urgency.

We must continue to help our customers grow and thrive with GitHub, expedite and simplify their cloud adoption journey, while supporting them every day. This will require strong focus and changes to how and where we invest our finite resources.

To start, we will align our work with the areas where we can best impact these goals and our customers’ needs across all of our products. Unfortunately, this will include changes that will result in a reduction of GitHub’s workforce by up to 10% through the end of FY23. A number of Hubbers will receive notifications today, others will follow as we are re-aligning the business through the end of FY23. The hiring pause that I announced on January 18 remains in effect.

Although our entire leadership team has carefully deliberated this step and come to agreement, ultimately, as CEO the decision is mine. I recognize this will be difficult on you all, and we will approach this period with the utmost respect for every Hubber. We will speak with impacted Hubbers so that they understand the transition compensation and COBRA/COBRA equivalent (outside the US) that will be provided. Career transition services assistance benefits will also be offered.

Additionally, we have been working to improve our operational efficiency and scale as a business. One of our decisions is to move toward a fully remote GitHub. We are seeing very low utilization rates in our offices around the world, and this decision is a testament to the success of our long-standing remote-first culture. We are not vacating offices immediately, but will move to close all of our offices as their leases end or as we are operationally able to do so. We will share more workplace details and transition plans with you as they are finalized.

We are looking at further reducing our operating costs. We will share details and transition plans with you in the coming months, but I wanted to share two decisions with you: i) Effective immediately, we will be moving laptop refreshes from three years to four years. ii) We will be moving to Microsoft Teams for the sole purpose of video conferencing, saving significant cost and simplifying cross-company and customer conversations. This move will be complete by September 1, 2023. We will remain on Slack as our day-to-day collaboration tool.

Finally, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to every single Hubber and their incredible talents that have helped GitHub grow to where we are today. Every commit you have made and every day you have worked has helped construct GitHub into the largest and most important software development platform. Thank you for your dedication, resilience, and passion to empower millions of software developers around the globe.”

The partnership is through Microsoft-ChatGPT multiyear, multibillion dollar investment to accelerate AI breakthroughs to ensure these benefits are broadly shared with the world.

This agreement follows Microsoft’s previous investments in 2019 and 2021.

“It extends our ongoing collaboration across AI supercomputing and research and enables each of us to independently commercialize the resulting advanced AI technologies”, Microsoft said.

Under the new deal:

1. Supercomputing at scale –

Microsoft will increase its investments in the development and deployment of specialized supercomputing systems to accelerate OpenAI’s groundbreaking independent AI research.

“We will also continue to build out Azure’s leading AI infrastructure to help customers build and deploy their AI applications on a global scale”.

2. New AI-powered experiences –

Microsoft will deploy OpenAI’s models across our consumer and enterprise products and introduce new categories of digital experiences built on OpenAI’s technology.

“This includes Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, which empowers developers to build cutting-edge AI applications through direct access to OpenAI models backed by Azure’s trusted, enterprise-grade capabilities and AI-optimized infrastructure and tools”.

3. Exclusive cloud provider –

As OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider, Azure will power all OpenAI workloads across research, products and API services.

“We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications.”

The past three years of our partnership have been great,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

“Microsoft shares our values and we are excited to continue our independent research and work toward creating advanced AI that benefits everyone.”

Since 2016, Microsoft has committed to building Azure into an AI supercomputer for the world, serving as the foundation of our vision to democratize AI as a platform.

Through the initial investment and collaboration, Microsoft and OpenAI pushed the frontier of cloud supercomputing technology, announcing our first top-5 supercomputer in 2020, and subsequently constructing multiple AI supercomputing systems at massive scale.

OpenAI has used this infrastructure to train its breakthrough models, which are now deployed in Azure to power category-defining AI products like GitHub Copilot, DALL·E 2 and ChatGPT.

“These innovations have captured imaginations and introduced large-scale AI as a powerful, general-purpose technology platform that we believe will create transformative impact at the magnitude of the personal computer, the internet, mobile devices and the cloud.

“Underpinning all of our efforts is Microsoft and OpenAI’s shared commitment to building AI systems and products that are trustworthy and safe.

“OpenAI’s leading research on AI Alignment and Microsoft’s Responsible AI Standard not only establish a leading and advancing framework for the safe deployment of our own AI technologies, but will also help guide the industry toward more responsible outcomes”, the company said.
