France Halts iPhone 12 Sales Over Radiation Levels https://techeconomy.ng/france-halts-iphone-12-sales-over-radiation-levels/ https://techeconomy.ng/france-halts-iphone-12-sales-over-radiation-levels/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 17:20:44 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=112949 Writer: TOLULOPE OLANIYI

France has reportedly ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation.

On Tuesday, the French watchdog which governs radio frequencies also told the tech giant to fix existing phones.

The ANFR has advised Apple that if it cannot resolve the issue via a software update, it must recall every iPhone 12 ever sold in the country.

But the World Health Organization has previously sought to allay fears about radiation emitted by mobile phones.

It says on its website there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to humans.

The iPhone 12 was first released in September 2020, and it is still sold worldwide.

Apple told the BBC it was contesting the ANFR’s review and said it had provided the regulator with lab results from the tech giant itself and third parties which show the device is compliant with all the relevant rules.

It said the iPhone 12 was recognised as being compliant with regulations on radiation levels worldwide.

France’s digital minister Jean-Noel Barrot told French newspaper Le Parisien the decision was due to radiation levels above the acceptable threshold, according to Reuters.

He said the ANFR found the iPhone 12’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was above what is legally allowed.

“Apple is expected to respond within two weeks,” he said.

“If they fail to do so, I am prepared to order a recall of all iPhones 12 in circulation. The rule is the same for everyone, including the digital giants.”

France will share its findings with other regulators across the trading bloc – which Barrot said could result in “a snowball effect”.

The ANFR requires the SAR of devices to be checked against two different ways a phone is used.

First there is a “membre” – or limb – check, for when a phone is in close contact with a person’s body, such as when it is held or placed in a trouser pocket. The SAR limit for this is four watts per kilogram.

The regulator said the device’s “membre” SAR was 5.74 watts per kilogram – higher than the limit.

There is also a check for when a phone is slightly further away, such as when it is in a bag or jacket pocket, but the iPhone 12’s SAR measure came in under this threshold.

The news first broke on Tuesday in France – the same day that Apple unveiled its new iPhone 15.

The new phone is the first since 2012 to feature an alternative charging port, and Apple says it will sell an adapter so people can use their existing cables.

It comes as the Chinese foreign ministry issued a rebuttal against media reports which claimed government agencies had told staff to stop using iPhones.

It said China has not issued any laws, regulations or policies blocking the use of Apple’s products.

France orders Apple to remove iPhone 12 from market over radiation concerns

France has ordered Apple to remove its three-year-old iPhone 12 from the market because tests showed electromagnetic radiation above permissible levels.

A French regulator has demanded that Apple remove its three-year-old iPhone 12 from the French market because tests showed electromagnetic radiation above permissible levels.

The French agency in charge of telecommunications regulation (ANFR) ordered that the iPhone model “no longer (be) offered for sale in all distribution channels in France” again.

The ANFR recently tested 141 phones in a laboratory to determine how much electromagnetic radiation the body absorbs during the operation of the phone.

It was found that the iPhone 12 exceeded the limit for direct body contact, for example, in the hand or the pocket.

Instead of the maximum permitted four watts per kilogramme, it was 5.74 watts per kilogramme.

The authorities want to check a possible update from Apple.

The limit value of two watts per kilogram for radiation values at a distance of five millimetres from the body, however, was complied with by the iPhone 12, wrote the ANFR.

It applies to situations in which a phone is carried in a jacket or pocket, for example.

How Good is MTN 5G? Users Share Experience https://techeconomy.ng/how-good-is-mtn-5g-users-share-experience/ https://techeconomy.ng/how-good-is-mtn-5g-users-share-experience/#comments Sun, 05 Mar 2023 19:51:26 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=97124 MTN’s 5G network launch in Nigeria is no longer breaking news. But, in case you didn’t know, 5G has been available in Nigeria since August 2022 and is available on routers and phones (iPhone 12 upwards and newer Android phones).

With news of higher multi-Gbps maximum data speeds of up to 10 Gbps and ultra-low latency on 5G technology, there has been a lot of talk about what 5G can do, the speed, and the mind-boggling possibilities it enables, among other things.

Now that MTN’s 5G network has been operational in Nigeria for over six months, let’s look at what the streets have said about it.

Much has been said about the speed of 5G. Let’s see if it’s true; A Twitter user, @hayateey1, got a download speed of 1 Gbps in Kano State using the MTN 5G network. @oumar_dr, a TikTok user in Kano state, had an internet download speed of 585 Mbps and an upload speed of 107 Mbps. Consider all the possibilities with that much internet speed.

    How Good is MTN 5G

Another Twitter user, @OlumayowaTJ, achieved 610 Mbps while using the MTN 5G network in Lagos. To put this in context, watching Netflix in 4K resolution requires a constant internet connection speed of 15 megabits per second.

    How Good is MTN 5G

Twitter user @Joe_brendan_ got an internet speed of 840 Mbps in Abuja.

    How Good is MTN 5G

Want more proof of how fast 5G is? Another Twitter user, @Ndianefoz, downloaded a 23 Gigabyte file in less than 60 minutes using the MTN 5G network in Lagos. Consider how much time this would save you if you are a content creator.

    How Good is MTN 5G
    Testimonials about MTN 5G

The gaming community is one of those most excited about 5G because the technology’s fast and stable connections will reduce lags, allowing them to enjoy playing multiplayer games more easily.

@smartdepotech, a Nigerian TikToker based in Port Harcourt, performed a ping test while playing Call of Duty on the MTN 4G and MTN 5G networks. For those unfamiliar with gaming terminology, the lower the ping, the faster and smoother the response rate when gaming. When he ran the ping test, the gameplay on the 5G network was smoother, giving him a competitive advantage. In another video, the same TikToker obtained an internet download speed of 1.4  Gbps in Port Harcourt.

5G is a game changer in technology because it makes what seemed impossible possible. With 5G, telemedicine, virtual reality, and smart homes, among other things, are now possible. Interestingly, some 5G use cases were demonstrated at the commercial launch of MTN 5G.

We’re sure you’re excited about the possibilities of 5G. However, before you buy a router, check the MTN site to see if your area has 5G coverage. You can configure and set up your router by following this YouTube tutorial.

MTN Unleashes 5G for iPhone Users in Nigeria  https://techeconomy.ng/mtn-unleashes-5g-for-iphone-users-in-nigeria/ https://techeconomy.ng/mtn-unleashes-5g-for-iphone-users-in-nigeria/#comments Mon, 19 Dec 2022 15:14:10 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=91702 Using a smartphone that is 5G-enabled is one way to connect to the 5G network. If your existing phone does not support 5G, you will need a new 5G phone in order to connect to MTN’s new 5G network and increase your world’s possibilities.

To date, no other telecom provider in Nigeria has launched the 5G network. Simply put, this indicates that only the MTN network is authorized to introduce 5G on devices like the Apple iPhones 12, 13, and SE 3rd Generation.

MTN claims that comprehensive testing of 5G with Apple allowed them to provide its subscribers with the benefits of 5G via the new iPhone.

Karl Olutokun Toriola, the CEO of MTN, posted on LinkedIn on Monday that mobile subscribers who possess an iPhone 12 and higher versions can start using the MTN 5G.

“You can now experience the power of 5G on your iPhone.

“Enjoy faster browsing speeds and downloads when you upgrade to iOS 16.2. Available on iPhone 12 and above.”

Recall that MTN promised to roll out the network in six additional cities after launching its commercial 5G network in Lagos in September 2022. Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri, and Maiduguri are among the cities.

Following 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, 5G is a brand-new international wireless standard. In order to connect practically everyone and everything together, including machines, objects, and people, 5G enables a new type of network, objects, and devices

Stream your favorite movies in 4K, make video calls with your loved ones without buffering or lag, enjoy a quality gaming experience, and carry out downloads at super-fast speeds with the MTN 5G network in Nigeria.

With download speeds up to 10 times faster than its predecessor, 5G will reinvent how we use the internet and bring us to a new phase of technological advancement with never-before-seen innovations and applications.
