This growth is attributed to the strong initial performance of the new Apple iPhone 16 series, which debuted on September 20, just a week before the end of the fourth quarter.

CEO of Apple, Tim Cook noted that early sales of the iPhone 16 outpaced those of the iPhone 15 during a similar timeframe, a positive reception to Apple’s latest product.

However, despite this encouraging news, the company’s overall revenue for the fourth quarter came in at $94.93 billion, slightly above the anticipated $94.58 billion.

Earnings of $1.64 per share, excluding a one-time tax charge, also surpassed expectations of $1.60 per share. Nevertheless, Apple’s stock saw a decline of 1.4% in after-hours trading, revealing investor doubts, particularly regarding disappointing sales figures in China, which fell short of forecasts.

Apple’s Chief Financial Officer, Luca Maestri, disclosed a cautious outlook for the upcoming fiscal first quarter, forecasting revenue growth in the low to mid-single digits. This contrasts sharply with analysts’ expectations of a 6.65% growth to approximately $127.53 billion.

Again, while Apple anticipates double-digit growth in its services sector, which includes services like iCloud and Apple Music, questions were raised about the potential decline in hardware revenue.

China’s market remains a focal point of concern, with analysts like Tom Forte from Maxim Group highlighting the risk of continued weak sales in the region.

Apple executives did not provide specific insights into the iPhone’s performance in China or comment on when the new AI features would be made available in the country, further intensifying investor apprehensions.

With these challenges, Apple is actively pursuing an aggressive AI strategy, integrating AI capabilities into its latest operating systems.

Cook confirmed that users are adopting the new iPhone operating system, which includes enhanced AI features, at double the rate seen in the previous year.

However, not all promised features have been launched, which has led to speculation regarding potential delays in device upgrades by consumers.

Capital expenditures also saw an increase, climbing by $2.91 billion from the previous quarter to $9.45 billion. This rise reiterates Apple’s focus on infrastructure, though the company continues to leverage third-party data centres for certain AI functions, focusing on maintaining privacy and security through its own in-house chips.

In other segments, Apple faced challenges as sales in its services business fell short of expectations at $24.97 billion, below the $25.28 billion forecast. Added to this, Mac and iPad sales of $7.74 billion and $6.95 billion, respectively, did not meet analyst projections.

Sales in the home and wearables division, encompassing products like the Apple Watch and AirPods, also dipped to $9.04 billion, missing estimates of $9.2 billion.

Apple iOS 18.1 Update Lets Users Remove Objects in Photos Seamlessly https://techeconomy.ng/apple-ios-18-1-update-lets-users-remove-objects-in-photos-seamlessly/ https://techeconomy.ng/apple-ios-18-1-update-lets-users-remove-objects-in-photos-seamlessly/#respond Thu, 29 Aug 2024 08:39:44 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=141608 Apple has introduced new features in its latest developer betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1, with a particular focus on enhancing photo editing capabilities.

One of the interesting features of these updates is “Clean Up,” a tool that allows users to effortlessly remove unwanted objects from their photos.

The Clean Up feature, integrated into the native Photos app, provides users with the ability to remove elements from an image without disturbing the overall composition.

By simply selecting an object or drawing over it, users can remove distractions from their photos. Apple’s system intelligently fills in the background where the object was removed, even accounting for shadows and reflections to ensure a seamless edit.

This addition comes as Apple continues to expand its range of photo editing tools, aiming to offer users more control over their images directly from their devices.

While similar features, such as Google’s Magic Eraser, have been available on other platforms, Apple’s Clean Up is designed to integrate deeply with the existing Photos app, making it a convenient and powerful tool for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users.

Currently, Clean Up is available only to users in the United States who have the latest iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max models, or M1-powered devices.

Other updates in iOS 18.1 include enhancements to Apple Intelligence features like notification summaries, now extended to cover all apps, and improved natural language search in Photos.

With these updates, Apple is enhancing its software ahead of the full release of iOS 18, expected to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 16 in September. However, Clean Up and other new features will be rolled out more widely in October with the iOS 18.1 update.

Microsoft to Supply China Staff with iPhone 15 for Tightened Security https://techeconomy.ng/microsoft-to-supply-china-staff-with-iphone-15-for-tightened-security/ https://techeconomy.ng/microsoft-to-supply-china-staff-with-iphone-15-for-tightened-security/#respond Tue, 09 Jul 2024 08:33:29 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=136121 Microsoft has revealed plans to provide its employees in China with Apple’s iPhone for accessing essential authentication apps.

This decision, which will enable Microsoft to tighten its cybersecurity, is part of its Secure Future Initiative and comes in response to the absence of Google Play Store services in China, which limits the availability of essential security applications such as Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Pass.

Per Reuters, a spokesperson from Microsoft confirmed the initiative on Monday, explaining that the change to iOS is necessary to ensure employees have seamless access to the required security tools.

This development follows a series of security challenges for Microsoft, including recent incidents involving Russian hackers who breached the company’s email systems.

According to an internal memo reported by Bloomberg News, Microsoft will reportedly begin distributing iPhone 15 models to its China-based employees starting in September. This will mitigate the risks associated with the unavailability of Google’s Android services in the region and maintain strong security standards for its workforce.

Microsoft has been present in China since entering the market in 1992. The company operates a research and development centre in the country, focusing on its long-term goals in the region despite the complex regulatory environment.

Hence, the latest measure is Microsoft’s assertive approach to safeguarding its operations and ensuring compliance with regional restrictions in the country, thereby maintaining high-security standards for its global workforce.

Will iPhone 16 Be the Game Changer? Rumours of the “Ultra” Possibilities https://techeconomy.ng/will-iphone-16-be-the-game-changer-rumours-of-the-ultra-possibilities/ https://techeconomy.ng/will-iphone-16-be-the-game-changer-rumours-of-the-ultra-possibilities/#comments Wed, 07 Feb 2024 17:59:03 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=124578 Just like me, a lot of people have definitely been waiting for the magic Apple would input in the iPhone 16 series following the release of the 15 series last year in September.

The buzz around the iPhone 16 has been growing steadily, with numerous leaks and rumours giving us a glimpse into what we can expect from Apple’s upcoming device.

Expected to hit the shelves in September 2024, the iPhone 16 is already generating excitement among tech enthusiasts and Apple fans alike. One of the most anticipated aspects of the iPhone 16 is its design.

Rumours suggest that the Pro models will sport larger displays, with sizes ranging from 6.3 inches to 6.9 inches. Meanwhile, the standard models are expected to retain the same size as the previous, with slight improvements in camera technology and overall performance.

In terms of hardware, the iPhone 16 is rumoured to run on 3-nanometer A18 chips, built with faster speed and improved efficiency. The Pro models may even feature more powerful versions of the A18 chip, enhancing the user experience and enabling seamless multitasking.

One of the unique features of the anticipated iPhone is the introduction of the “Capture” button, designed to modify the way users take photos and videos. This dedicated button will allow for quick and easy access to the camera functions, making it easier than ever to capture those special moments.

The iPhone 16 is expected to support Wi-Fi 7 and feature a Snapdragon X75 modem, ensuring lightning-fast connectivity and a smoother browsing experience. With these advancements, users can expect faster download speeds and improved network reliability. Additionally, the standard iPhone 16 models might see an upgrade to Wi-Fi 6E, offering improved bandwidth and reliability on the 6GHz band.

On the software front, iOS 16 has been unveiled, bringing a host of new features and enhancements to the new iPhone. Improved search capabilities in Messages to customizable lock screens with widgets and interactive wallpapers, iOS 16 is coming to take the user experience to new heights.

Another interesting rumour is a possible “iPhone 16 Ultra” variant, positioned as the pinnacle of the lineup. This premium model could assert additional camera enhancements, an even larger display, and perhaps even a portless design. However, concrete evidence for this “Ultra” version remains elusive.

iPhone 16 Specifications
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max Specifications

While the iPhone 15 Pro models experimented with solid-state buttons, ultimately opting for mechanical ones, rumours suggest Apple might revisit this concept in the anticipated iPhone. However, instead of replacing all buttons, the focus might be on a refined “Action Button” experience, potentially expanding its functionality across all iPhone 16 models.

Reports also suggest deeper integration of AI features with iOS 18, and the iPhone 16 could be at the forefront of this advancement. Some AI features might be exclusive to the new iPhone, leveraging its improved microphone with enhanced water resistance and signal-to-noise ratio for seamless interaction with Siri and other AI-powered applications.

Though specifics are hazy, camera improvements are a constant expectation with each iPhone iteration. The iPhone 16 Pro models might feature a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens for superior low-light performance, while both Pro models could get 5x telephoto lenses, eliminating the exclusivity currently held by the Pro Max. Additionally, a “super telephoto periscope” lens is rumoured for the Pro Max, bringing a dramatic zoom increase for photography enthusiasts.

Again, ProMotion displays with 120Hz refresh rates might grace standard iPhone models starting in 2025, while under-display Face ID and front-facing cameras are speculated to arrive by 2026, spotlighting a truly all-screen design.

France Halts iPhone 12 Sales Over Radiation Levels https://techeconomy.ng/france-halts-iphone-12-sales-over-radiation-levels/ https://techeconomy.ng/france-halts-iphone-12-sales-over-radiation-levels/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 17:20:44 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=112949 Writer: TOLULOPE OLANIYI

France has reportedly ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation.

On Tuesday, the French watchdog which governs radio frequencies also told the tech giant to fix existing phones.

The ANFR has advised Apple that if it cannot resolve the issue via a software update, it must recall every iPhone 12 ever sold in the country.

But the World Health Organization has previously sought to allay fears about radiation emitted by mobile phones.

It says on its website there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to humans.

The iPhone 12 was first released in September 2020, and it is still sold worldwide.

Apple told the BBC it was contesting the ANFR’s review and said it had provided the regulator with lab results from the tech giant itself and third parties which show the device is compliant with all the relevant rules.

It said the iPhone 12 was recognised as being compliant with regulations on radiation levels worldwide.

France’s digital minister Jean-Noel Barrot told French newspaper Le Parisien the decision was due to radiation levels above the acceptable threshold, according to Reuters.

He said the ANFR found the iPhone 12’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was above what is legally allowed.

“Apple is expected to respond within two weeks,” he said.

“If they fail to do so, I am prepared to order a recall of all iPhones 12 in circulation. The rule is the same for everyone, including the digital giants.”

France will share its findings with other regulators across the trading bloc – which Barrot said could result in “a snowball effect”.

The ANFR requires the SAR of devices to be checked against two different ways a phone is used.

First there is a “membre” – or limb – check, for when a phone is in close contact with a person’s body, such as when it is held or placed in a trouser pocket. The SAR limit for this is four watts per kilogram.

The regulator said the device’s “membre” SAR was 5.74 watts per kilogram – higher than the limit.

There is also a check for when a phone is slightly further away, such as when it is in a bag or jacket pocket, but the iPhone 12’s SAR measure came in under this threshold.

The news first broke on Tuesday in France – the same day that Apple unveiled its new iPhone 15.

The new phone is the first since 2012 to feature an alternative charging port, and Apple says it will sell an adapter so people can use their existing cables.

It comes as the Chinese foreign ministry issued a rebuttal against media reports which claimed government agencies had told staff to stop using iPhones.

It said China has not issued any laws, regulations or policies blocking the use of Apple’s products.

France orders Apple to remove iPhone 12 from market over radiation concerns

France has ordered Apple to remove its three-year-old iPhone 12 from the market because tests showed electromagnetic radiation above permissible levels.

A French regulator has demanded that Apple remove its three-year-old iPhone 12 from the French market because tests showed electromagnetic radiation above permissible levels.

The French agency in charge of telecommunications regulation (ANFR) ordered that the iPhone model “no longer (be) offered for sale in all distribution channels in France” again.

The ANFR recently tested 141 phones in a laboratory to determine how much electromagnetic radiation the body absorbs during the operation of the phone.

It was found that the iPhone 12 exceeded the limit for direct body contact, for example, in the hand or the pocket.

Instead of the maximum permitted four watts per kilogramme, it was 5.74 watts per kilogramme.

The authorities want to check a possible update from Apple.

The limit value of two watts per kilogram for radiation values at a distance of five millimetres from the body, however, was complied with by the iPhone 12, wrote the ANFR.

It applies to situations in which a phone is carried in a jacket or pocket, for example.
