For years, Apple’s main OLED suppliers have primarily been Samsung, from the iPhone X era to the current Pro models. However, a new player is now taking on a bigger function.

According to new industry reports, Apple and BOE Technology Group are deepening their partnership, targeting the shipment of 35 million OLED panels for iPhones throughout the year.

Apple began using BOE display panels in 2021 before later expanding their use across some standard iPhone models, including the iPhone 12, 13 and 14 series.

While the Chinese company initially struggled to meet Apple’s quality standards, it eventually became a regular supplier of some lower-tier iPhone models. Now, the partnership appears to be expanding further.

Currently, BOE has solidified its position as the primary supplier for legacy models and entry-level iPhones including the new 17e.

By scaling with BOE, Apple gains greater bargaining power, ensuring no single supplier can dictate pricing or create problems in the global distribution of its most popular devices.

The 35 Million Display Target is Not Random

Being one of the most important tech companies globally, Apple cannot just hand over the supply of 35 million OLED panels to a supplier unless they have passed years of testing, calibration, and manufacturing scrutiny.

BOE’s expected 35 million panel allocation is likely linked to Apple’s more mainstream iPhone lineup. Devices like the upcoming standard iPhone models and future “e” variants are expected to benefit the most from this partnership expansion.

Unlike many Android manufacturers that aggressively market AMOLED saturation with high peak brightness, Apple’s philosophy has always been about a balance of colour, power efficiency and long-term reliability.

This approach has become highly important in regions where millions of users keep their devices longer than before.

The more Apple distributes OLED panel production across multiple suppliers, the stronger its bargaining position becomes.

However, this does not imply that Samsung is suddenly out of the picture.

Samsung Display is still expected to be Apple’s primary supplier, particularly their most advanced niche OLED panels, especially in areas where manufacturing complexity is higher.

This includes displays for Pro iPhone models, high-refresh LTPO panels, ultra-thin OLED architectures, and potentially Apple’s rumoured foldable iPhone.

What Apple is doing is not replacing Samsung, but redistributing responsibilities and reducing overall dependence on a single supplier.

LG Electronics (LG) has reaffirmed its commitment to community, compassion, and shared prosperity as it joins Muslim faithful across Nigeria in celebrating the holy month of Ramadan.

Through its annual “Share The Life’s Good” campaign, the brand continues to create meaningful impact by organizing Iftar outreaches in mosques and community centres across key cities. The initiative provides meals to fasting Muslims, fostering a spirit of togetherness and reinforcing the values of giving and unity that define the season.

Ramadan, a period of spiritual reflection, devotion, and generosity, offers an opportunity for individuals and communities to reconnect and support one another. LG’s intervention aligns with these values, ensuring families can experience comfort and nourishment during the fasting period.

LG Gives Muslim Faithfuls a Ramadan to Remember

Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Hyoung Sub Ji, the managing director, LG Electronics, described Ramadan as a time that strengthens human connection and shared purpose.

“Ramadan is a sacred period marked by prayer, fasting, and reflection. It brings people closer and reinforces the importance of kindness and community. This trio of cutting-edge technologies marks a bold new chapter in TV evolution uniting cinematic picture quality, AI-driven personalization, and industry-first wireless capabilities.

While each product line is tailored to suit different viewing preferences and lifestyle needs, they all share a single mission: to redefine the future of television through immersive visuals, intelligent sound, and seamless smart home connectivity.

From the refined elegance of OLED to the vibrant brilliance of QNED, and the proven performance of NanoCell, LG continues to set the standard in premium viewing experiences offering something extraordinary for every type of viewer.

“Whether it’s the cinematic mastery of OLED, the bold brilliance of QNED, or the vibrant clarity of NanoCell, LG’s 2025 lineup is designed to reflect the way people live, play, and connect today,” said Mr. Choongbae Seok, general manager, Media Entertainment Solutions, TV Division, LG Electronics West Africa. “We’re not just building televisions; we’re creating personal entertainment ecosystems for every Nigerian home.”

A Tale of Two Titans: OLED evo vs QNED

At the core of LG’s 2025 TV offerings are two powerhouses: the OLED evo, known for its self-lit pixel precision and cinematic blacks, and the QNED, which pushes the boundaries of LCD through Mini LED backlighting and LG’s proprietary Dynamic QNED Color technology.

Though different in their technological foundations, both platforms are unified by LG’s latest Alpha AI processors and webOS 25, delivering smarter, more personalized user experiences.

OLED evo: The Gold Standard in Picture Precision

For the purist, LG’s OLED evo models now led by the G5 and C5 series are unrivaled in delivering perfect blacks, infinite contrast, and award-winning design.

Powered by the Alpha 11 AI Processor Gen2, the OLED evo TVs boast Brightness Booster Ultimate, achieving brightness levels three times higher than traditional OLEDs.

Certified by UL and Intertek for Perfect Black and 100% Colour Fidelity, these displays promise breath-taking realism in any environment.

Gamers will especially value the OLED evo’s 4K 165Hz VRR, a world first, along with NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium certification, ensuring tear-free, ultra-responsive gameplay.

Additional creator-focused tools like Dynamic Tone Mapping Professional and Filmmaker Mode with Ambient Light Compensation position OLED evo as both a home theatre essential and a creator’s canvas.

QNED: Next-Level LCD with a Premium Edge

For those seeking a high-performance alternative to OLED, the QNED series delivers striking visual depth through Mini LED and Dynamic QNED Color, replacing traditional quantum dot technology. With precise light control managed by the Alpha AI processor, these TVs offer brilliant contrast and clarity, rivaling OLED’s excellence in large, well-lit environments.

The 2025 QNED models also shine in the gaming arena with 4K 144Hz support, low latency, and a built-in LG Gaming Portal featuring native apps and cloud services, no console required.

And with sizes extending up to 100 inches, QNED brings ultra-large cinematic viewing to a wider audience, making it ideal for modern family rooms and smart homes.

LG Display Shatters Limits with 4,000-Nit OLED Panel | 33% Brighter | 40% More Colourful | 20% More Efficient https://techeconomy.ng/lg-display-shatters-limits-with-4000-nit-oled-panel-33-brighter-40-more-colourful-20-more-efficient/ https://techeconomy.ng/lg-display-shatters-limits-with-4000-nit-oled-panel-33-brighter-40-more-colourful-20-more-efficient/#respond Thu, 16 Jan 2025 11:29:16 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=151306 LG Display has launched its fourth-generation OLED TV panel, built with a four-layer tandem structure that brings more brightness and improved energy efficiency.

The new panel comes with a maximum brightness of 4,000 nits, a 33% improvement over the previous model, making it the industry’s brightest OLED display to date.

This is made possible by LG Display’s proprietary Primary RGB Tandem structure, which uses independent layers of red, green, and blue light elements. Unlike previous designs, this panel incorporates two layers of blue elements and separate layers for red and green, significantly enhancing light production and overall brightness.

In addition to its amazing brightness, the panel achieves a colour brightness of 2,100 nits, a 40% increase from earlier versions. In separating the primary colours into distinct layers, the display is sharper with more vivid visuals, ensuring true-to-life picture quality even in bright environments.

The panel also includes ultra-low reflection technology, which eliminates 99% of internal and external light reflections, allowing for perfect blacks and superior contrast, even in well-lit settings.

Energy efficiency is another great feature. The panel is designed to meet the high power demands of advanced AI-powered TVs while consuming 20% less energy compared to its predecessor.

These improvements make it a sustainable choice, with over 90% fewer plastic raw materials used in its production and a recycling rate of over 92.7% for its components.

LG Display also prioritised user health and comfort with the new OLED panel, reducing harmful blue light emissions to just 45%, way lower than the levels emitted by traditional LCDs. This makes the display safer for extended viewing, reducing strain on the eyes and minimising disruptions to sleep patterns.

The fourth-generation OLED panel will initially be featured in LG Display’s premium TV range, including models from Panasonic and LG Electronics. Plans are also underway to incorporate this technology into high-end gaming monitors, offering features like rapid refresh rates, enhanced response times, and bendable designs that adapt to the content being displayed.

Hyeon-woo Lee, senior vice president and head of the Large Display Business Unit at LG Display, described the innovation as a leap forward in display technology. “This panel represents the essence of innovation, surpassing the limitations of existing displays. With unmatched picture quality and user-friendly features, we aim to redefine the viewing experience while maintaining our leadership in OLED technology,” he said.

Just imagine the convenience of being able to control and monitor your household appliances—like the refrigerator or washing machine—remotely via an app on your phone while away from the house.

With rising adoption of Smart Living solutions and products, the market is recording noticeable growth. Industry stats indicate that the number of active households with Smart Home (or Living) devices and appliances is expected to reach about 93.6 million by 2027, while the average revenue per installed Smart Home unit is currently expected to amount to $546.50.

The revenue is expected to show an annual growth rate (CAGR 2022–2027) of 10.22%, resulting in a projected market volume of $52.19 billion by 2027, according to Statista.

And device and household appliance manufacturers, having recognised this trend, are aligning their future plans and strategies to target and address the needs of this growing market. And among these companies keenly taking aim at the Smart Living industry is LG Electronics.

In early August, LG Electronics announced that it aims to become a Smart Living solutions company that connects and expands customers’ diverse experiences by 2030.

To achieve the vision, the South Korea-based company plans to invest more than Kshs 5.48 trillion by 2030 for the qualitative growth of the business, including the advancement of the business portfolio led by the three new growth engines: transitioning to a platform-based service business model, accelerating B2B business, and procuring new growth engines.

The move will see the company record an estimated global annual revenue of up to Kshs 10.96 trillion, even as it evolves from its current position as a top global home appliance brand.

“LG will continue to pursue its bold vision to transform and leap forward as a smart life solutions company that connects and expands customers’ various spaces and experiences, rather than resting on its current position as the best home appliance brand that provides quality products,” said CEO Cho. “We will establish a brand-new LG by reinventing the way we work and communicate toward this goal.”

And to further outline its Smart Living Solutions vision, LG introduced its latest energy-efficient technologies and products to reaffirm its commitment to achieve a sustainable future at IFA 2023 in Berlin, Germany.

Showcased to the media during the LG briefing at IFA 2023 was the LG Therma V R290 Monobloc Air-to-Water Heat Pump (AWHP), which comes with powerful heating capability to help create a warm, comfortable indoor environment within the household.

The AWHP is equipped with an array of efficiency-boosting LG technologies and utilizes R290 refrigerant, which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only three.

The solution also ensures convenient maintenance with a remote support feature that enables quick software updates and the easy application of installer settings.

Then there’s the LG SIGNATURE second-generation washer-dryer, which features the brand’s own inverter heat pump drying module that boosts energy efficiency, improves drying results, and reduces fabric damage.

And to control and monitor these appliances even remotely, LG’s own smart home platform, LG ThinQ, enables users to seamlessly connect all of their household appliances for a smarter, more convenient user experience.

The ThinQ app makes it possible to effortlessly control each appliance, manage the entire HVAC system, and monitor energy storage and consumption in real-time.

“Highly energy efficient, LG’s home appliances support households to save energy, shrink their utility costs, and lower their carbon footprint,” said Kim Dong Youn, MD, LG Electronics West Africa Operations.

“We will continue to leverage our industry-leading core technologies to create products that make people’s lives better and have less impact on the planet.”

The extensive lineup of home appliances offering A-grade (and above) energy efficiency in the ‘Net-Zero House’ at IFA 2023 is designed for a more sustainable life.

The company’s latest kitchen, laundry, and living solutions respond to the growing need to reduce power consumption, running costs, and environmental impact.

The lineup includes; energy-efficient laundry solution with AI Optimization LG’s new front-loader washer and dryer – the pair gets laundry clean and dry without running up the power bill.

LG energy-efficient Refrigerator with strong performance is another highly efficient performer, the new LG bottom freezer refrigerator has an A-20 percent energy rating.
