Highlights
  • Bayobab, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MTN Group, has signed a five-year deal with Infobip
  • The new collaboration simplifies messaging for brands with advanced technology

Infobip has entered a strategic five-year partnership with Bayobab, a leading African digital connectivity provider.

Bayobab will use Infobip’s Communication Platform as a Service (CPaaS) Customer Modules and Routing management to handle campaign management, APIs, and analytics and deliver SMS across Africa and beyond.

Bayobab will also access Infobip’s security solutions such as a best-in-class firewall to ensure the safety of their mobile subscribers.

With this partnership, Bayobab is streamlining its SMS connectivity and reducing associated administrative costs.

Bayobab is a leading connectivity and infrastructure provider in Africa which operates extensively across the continent, boasting over 115,000 km of fiber cable.

Bayobab provides access to and manages, directly or indirectly, 24 subsea cables, along with over 70 Points of Presence (PoPs) across Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Traditionally, brands had to connect individually with each Mobile Network Operator (MNO) within the MTN Group to terminate SMS.

With Infobip’s CPaaS enablement platform modules, Bayobab simplifies this process so that brands and aggregators can now securely connect once and terminate traffic to MTN and other operators.

This solution offers enhanced control, security, reporting, and efficiency, benefiting brands, mobile operators, and message recipients.

Kedar Gupte, chief mobility business officer at Bayobab, said:

“We wanted to simplify how brands manage messaging in Africa with a single access point, high-quality service, and necessary controls. Our partnership with Infobip equips us to do this on a large scale and is crucial for tapping into Africa’s growth potential, where consumers demand messaging solutions, chat apps, and internet access.

Matija Ražem, chief commercial telecom officer at Infobip, added:

“Our partnership optimizes Bayobab’s SMS connectivity and routing across Africa, supporting its expansion plans. We invested heavily in our CPaaS enablement capabilities, which now serve MNOs worldwide with top-tier security and efficiency.

“Infobip has been managing global SMS traffic since 2006. We excel in the messaging ecosystem with the latest technology, secure processes, and best practices. Extending this to large entities is a logical next step. The timing is right for more mobile operator groups to adopt a hub approach and maximize their messaging opportunities.”

Infobip’s CPaaS enablement modules, now available to all MNOs, include the following:

  • Best-in-class CPaaS platform: campaign and ID management, bulk messaging, usage reports
  • Route management:source, destination, quality, volume, percentage, time, traffic type
  • Revenue protection:grey route detection, automated penetration testing, least cost, minimum margin
  • Unified reporting:management overview, partner access, flexible interface, trends analysis
  • Onboarding:online visibility and onboarding for all brands, partners, and suppliers

These items are a critical component of Infobip’s significant CPaaS enablement solution.

It can integrate core telco network capabilities with RCS MaaP building blocks and Camara-compliant network APIs.

Infobip’s CPaaS enablement solution and Developer Experience network will help telecoms monetize CPaaS opportunities more efficiently.

It marks a major step for Infobip to democratize the messaging ecosystem globally, hand in hand with telcos.

Global communications platform Infobip is bringing together global mobile telecoms business Nokia, mobile industry association GSMA, leading Croatian telco Croatian Telekom (Hrvatski Telekom) and other companies at its leading developer-focused conference Shift this year.

Following several successful partnerships launching Camara-compliant Network APIs under the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, telcos and MNOs globally want to launch and monetize emerging and future services.

Many firms still need better relationships with developers to do so quickly and efficiently. That’s why MNOs are attending Infobip Shift this year.

Matija Ražem, VP of Business Development at Infobip, said:

“We are among the first to support the Camara project and the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, and closely working with telcos to deliver new added-value services. Our collaboration with Nokia, GSMA, and other MNOs at Shift Zadar shows how we work with our telco partners to expose customer experience-friendly APIs to developers”.

At Shift, Elmo, a tech-automotive company, will present its remote driving technology where attendees can drive a car in Finland through a console in Croatia.

Elmo worked with Nokia to implement its Network as a Code API to control Elmo cars remotely by operating the remote consol through the wireless 5G Campus network of Croatian Telekom and will count on Infobip’s and Croatian Telekom’s support to bring this experience in this year’s Shift Zadar edition to the guests.

“The work of building the Network API ecosystem has advanced remarkably well this year. This important developer event that our partner, Infobip, is hosting further underlines the strong appetite in that ecosystem to come together to share the latest information and solutions as we progress with making it easier for developers around the world to utilize network capabilities and develop new use cases for their customers,” said Shkumbin Hamiti, head of Network Monetization Platform, Cloud and Network Services at Nokia.

For GSMA – one of the main Shift Zadar sponsors this year – the Open Gateway initiative has a crucial role in the ecosystem of Telco APIs combined with CPaaS APIs. “The GSMA Open Gateway initiative is going from strength to strength and has culminated in the birth of a new API era. We want to nurture and grow this opportunity and provide access to developers, cloud providers, and telcos so they can launch game-changing new services. Our presence at Shift helps drive awareness of this opportunity and ensure its growth,” said Henry Calvert, Head of Networks at GSMA.

As one of the companies participating in Shift Zadar and providing the underlying communication technology for the Elmo remote driving experience, Boris Drilo, Chief Technical & Information Officer (CTIO) at Croatia Telekom, said:

“Network APIs are bringing the engagement of our customers and their favorite brands to the next level. Croatian Telecom offers this new business capability to Croatian businesses, bringing them eye-to-eye with their European peers. Telecom network capabilities exposure to developers has never been easier or simpler, revealing great possibilities. GSMA’s Open Gateway Initiative is making this approach scalable, creating the foundation for the rapid introduction of new use cases throughout telecom operators’ footprints. Croatian Telekom is opening the door to this new opportunity for all our partners to deliver their services in Croatia”.

As a great promoter and participant in the Open Gateway initiative, and one of the main guests at Shift Zadar 2024, Cedric Gonin, API Business Strategy and Channel Management Director at Orange, said:

“Making Network APIs accessible to developers is fostering innovation in several industries. At Orange, we are committed to share our APIs with developers and partners to experiment and implement new solutions. Our participation in the Infobip Shift event highlights our dedication to empowering the developer community with innovative tools that enable the creation of tomorrow’s digital services through the CAMARA API within the Open Gateway initiative.”

Today, Infobip, a globally recognised cloud communications platform, and Nokia, announced a partnering agreement that will enable the global developer community to leverage both companies’ Application Programmable Interface (API) platforms in order to build a wider array of telco network powered applications faster for consumer, enterprise, and industrial customers.

Infobip’s market-leading cloud Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) provides developers with APIs for integrating real-time omnichannel communications features such as SMS, voice, video, chat apps, and network APIs into their applications.

Infobip and Nokia

Nokia’s Network as Code platform with developer portal offers developers APIs for tapping into 5G network capabilities like quality of service (QoS) on demand, device location precision and network slicing, as well as 4G capabilities.

Developers will be able to utilize all of those capabilities more easily, giving them complete coverage of Network and CPaaS APIs in the development of new use cases and the capacity to enhance application performance.

Nokia’s Network as Code platform with developer portal brings together networks from around the world, along with systems integrators and software developers, into a unified ecosystem; using technical standards produced through industry initiatives such as the GSMA Open Gateway initiative and the Linux Foundation CAMARA. Nokia and Infobip contribute to both initiatives.

Infobip’s customer engagement use cases include CAMARA-compliant Number Verify and SIM Swap APIs, which are already live.

The firm is also working to bring further use cases to market including Device Location and Quality on Demand APIs, having now signed 12 API collaboration agreements.

The CPaaS platform was recently named a finalist in the inaugural Global Mobile Awards GSMA Open Gateway Challenge for its anti-fraud intelligence collaboration.

The joint work between Infobip and Nokia will offer a simplified developer experience without the burden of navigating the complex underlying network technologies, allowing developers to integrate capabilities into their applications faster, relative to working separately with the two companies’ platforms.

Nokia has signed collaboration agreements with 11 network operators and ecosystem partners to use the Network as Code platform with developer portal since its launch in September 2023.
