MediaTek has improved commendably with its HyperEngine gaming technology, which combines graphics processing, network optimisation and system tuning to deliver smoother gameplay.

Despite these improvements, many flagship gaming phones still rely on Snapdragon processors because of their consistent performance and stronger developer optimisation.

Which is Better for AI and Imaging?

Artificial intelligence has become a huge feature of smartphones in 2026, powering tools such as voice assistants, camera enhancements and real-time image processing.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 includes a powerful AI engine and advanced image signal processor designed for computational photography and faster on-device AI tasks.

MediaTek is also investing heavily in AI capabilities. Its newer Dimensity chips feature improved AI processing units designed to handle generative AI features and advanced smartphone photography.

This event marked the first global showcase of this cutting-edge technology, representing a key milestone in bringing multi-device collaboration into real-world 5G networks.

With the growing popularity of applications such as extended reality (XR), 4K live broadcasting, and immersive metaverse experiences, single user equipment (UE) faces inherent limitations in power, spectrum, and channel capacity.

UE Aggregation offers a compelling solution by enabling Remote UEs to collaborate with nearby Relay UEs.

Relay UEs can contribute their spare resources to enhance the uplink performance of Remote UEs, effectively breaking through the bottlenecks of single-device capabilities.

UE Aggregation integrates three key dimensions of cooperation to create a robust and efficient uplink transmission chain:

  • Power Aggregation: 

The Relay UEs assist with signal forwarding, improving uplink connectivity in areas with weak coverage.

  • Bandwidth Aggregation: 

Relay UEs share their unused spectrum resources, boosting the Remote UE’s uplink throughput.

  • Channel Aggregation: 

Remote and Relay UEs simultaneously establish independent communication links, enabling multi-path transmission and enhancing reliability and redundancy.

The live trial was conducted in A-Z center lab based on AIS commercial 5G network configuration, using ZTE’s 5G gNodeB and core network equipment. MediaTek supplied prototype terminals equipped with UE Aggregation capabilities. Test scenarios simulated collaboration between Remote and Relay UEs, with direct comparisons to conventional single-device setups.

Performance was evaluated based on wireless uplink throughput and real-time 4K video streaming from mobile devices, achieving following results:

  • Uplink speeds for edge users improved by up to three times with UE Aggregation enabled.
  • Without aggregation, uplink throughput is insufficient for stable 4K live streaming, resulting in frequent stuttering and frame drops.
  • When aggregation was activated, uplink can support smooth and high-quality 4K live streaming with consistent quality and no noticeable frame loss.

UE Aggregation has been incorporated into the 3GPP Release 18 specifications and will continue to evolve in future releases (Releases 19 and 20). Future iterations will support multi-path routing, multi-relay architecture, inter-DU/CU coordination, and intelligent low-latency path optimization—laying a strong foundation for future use cases in industrial IoT, vehicle-to-everything (V2X), and XR.

Presented by CEO Jensen Huang during his keynote at Computex 2025 in Taipei, the announcement came with a message that Nvidia no longer intends to be just a chipmaker, it wants to become the backbone of the next wave of AI infrastructure

NVLink Fusion is offering rival chipmakers a piece of the technology Nvidia itself uses to build its high-performance AI systems.

Marvell Technology and MediaTek have already signed on to adopt NVLink Fusion, showing early industry trust. This technology enables chip-to-chip communication speeds up to 14 times faster than PCIe, a good move forward for training and running AI models at scale. 

It’s not limited to Nvidia’s own systems anymore. Companies building their own AI chips can now link multiple processors with Nvidia’s own fabric, essentially bringing them into the Nvidia AI ecosystem.

Once upon a time, I spent 90 percent of my keynote talking about graphics cards,” Huang said. “Now, our mission is to build the AI infrastructure of the future.” 

That infrastructure includes partnerships with Qualcomm, Fujitsu, Alchip, Astera Labs, Synopsys, and Cadence to make NVLink Fusion usable across full rack-scale AI architectures.

Huang also used the stage to reveal Nvidia’s next line of AI chips. The Blackwell Ultra is due out later this year. Rubin will follow, and a new chip family named Feynman is set for 2028. 

These timelines are Nvidia’s roadmap for staying ahead in an industry that’s evolving faster than any before it.

The company also confirmed that its desktop AI computer, DGX Spark, designed for researchers, has entered full production and will be available within weeks.

Outside the announcements, Nvidia is strengthening its physical footprint in Asia. Huang revealed plans to build a new regional headquarters in Taipei’s northern suburbs, reflecting both commercial intent and geopolitical awareness as semiconductor influence shifts eastward.

This report explores this new definition and why smartphones can be essential for vendors to implement on-device GenAI, as well as what on-device AI applications on smartphones will look like in the future.

What is the definition of an “AI-capable smartphone”?

Lucas Zhong, writes:

“Unlike PCs, smartphones have embraced AI technology for much longer, making ‘AI-capable smartphones’ a much broader concept to define.

Chipset vendors such as Qualcomm, Mediatek, Samsung and Google have focused on improving NPU/TPU performance for years.

Smartphone vendors including Apple, Huawei, vivo, and Xiaomi are implementing AIML algorithms locally to improve imaging quality, battery life, and typing experience.

However, integrating LLM and other GenAI models on-device will require a different computing platform and software capabilities. Canalys believes an “AI-capable” smartphone should meet the following criteria:

Minimal requirements: A smartphone that meets all the following criteria can be defined as an “AI-capable smartphone”.

  • The SoC should include a dedicated unit (eg, Qualcomm Hexagon, MediaTek APU, Google TPU) to accelerate AI-related tasks.
  • The smartphone should be able to run LLMs (eg, Google Gemini, Samsung Gauss) and other generative AI models (eg, Stable Diffusion) on-device.
  • LLM inference performance on-device should be faster than the average adult’s reading speed, equating to 10 tokens per second (based on LLaMA-2 7B, or equivalent).
  • Image generation using on-device AI should be less than two seconds (Stable Diffusion v1.5, 20 steps, 512*512, or equivalent).

Optional requirements: An “AI-capable smartphone” may not necessarily meet all the following requirements. However, meeting the optional requirements can enhance the user experience.

  • A LLM (eg, Google Gemini, Samsung Gauss) should be pre-installed out of the box.
  • GenAI-related APIs and SDKs are available for third-party developers to integrate GenAI-powered features in the mobile applications that can be run on-device.
  • First-party GenAI-powered features developed by the vendor are pre-installed on the device and can be run on-device efficiently.

Why smartphones are essential to on-device AI?

Prominent installed base: Smartphones have the most extensive installed base compared to edge computing devices such as PCs.

Canalys expects the total installed base of global smartphones to reach five billion in 2023, much larger than the 1.4 billion installed base for laptops and desktops combined.

The gap will become more prominent, especially in developing markets and among younger generations, who have jumped over the PC era and spend more time on content consumption and social media using mobile-native apps.

AI applications will, therefore, reach a larger audience when integrated into the smartphone form factor.

Portable form factor: Smartphones are portable and can accelerate the penetration of AI app usage.

A pocket-sized device enables use cases that more closely align with daily activities, ranging from communication to entertainment.

These use cases can complement the productivity use cases of PCs, thus widening the reach of AI in digital life.

The availability of different sensors in smartphones further enhances data collection for AI, paving the way for the development of highly personalized AI applications.

Robust app ecosystem: Smartphone’s robust app ecosystem will enable a thriving developer community for vendors.

Unlike smartwatches, which typically have fewer applications in the marketplace, and focus on specific use cases such as health and workout suggestions, smartphones offer a broader canvas for AI innovation..

The strength of the app ecosystem facilitates seamless AI integration across apps and fosters the creation of diverse third-party AI applications under a strong developer community.

Hub in the smart device ecosystem: A smartphone’s connectivity and versatility means it plays a more critical role than other edge devices.

Major players in the industry, such as Samsung with its Galaxy Ecosystem and Xiaomi with its smartphone x AIoT strategy, put smartphones at the center of their vast device ecosystems.

Integrating AI on-device will further enhance the interconnected experience, empowering smartphone AI to generate personalized actions to control other devices based on user behavior and contextual scenarios.

How will on-device AI revolutionize smartphones in the near future?

The following chart shows a smartphone’s major use cases including Entertainment, Communication, and Information in a pyramid view. We also list some (early) potential AI-powered features for each use case.

Smartphones are also a light productivity device for most users compared to PCs. So vendors still need to develop meaningful features in the “productivity” area to attract prosumers in the premium segment.

It is worth noting that prosumers expect quality, accuracy, and reliability in Gen AI output. Therefore, establishing credibility and trust in the AI features and their on-device models is essential, providing opportunities for differentiation for vendors that can demonstrate their AI capabilities early on to capture the premium prosumer market.

Osman has been working in the Middle East and Africa’s ICT industry since 2002, and has held a number of positions.

TE: Can you tell us your recent event you had in Dubai and also what do you intend to achieve with your partnership with Airtel?

Rami Osman: We try to keep touch with the media in big markets every year. So, we did the global conference. In Dubai, it was a physical event.

In Dubai, we invited the press from all the key markets which includes Turkey, Pakistan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, and we showcased our technologies and our recent projects, especially the ones in 2023. We focused on regional successes and we showed some devices made from the region.

There is a manufacturing industry in Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and design industry in South Africa. We hope that more and more manufacturing and designs can come from the region. So, we invited the media to see for themselves because it will be very difficult for the media to connect with these things if they don’t understand them.

They would think it is impossible to manufacture or design anything outside of China. There is a big misunderstanding from the media side. The consumer does not have to understand how the supply chain works, but the media needs to, especially since after the Covid-19. So, inviting the media to show them and talk to them about how the design works was important.

Talking about Airtel, MediaTek is a global supplier, so we work with everybody. But for purpose of optimising the technology, we do like to work closer with the operator, so that the user can get good experience from the commercial device.

You are not buying the device from Media Tek, it is not a MediaTek branded device and you are not running it on a MediaTek network.

There is no such business model, not even Apple offers that, we have to work with each other. The chip set is from me, the design of the board, the software and operating system is from Google and it is manufactured by probably a Chinese company and all these work seamlessly on one operator in Nigeria. If Africa is close to 50 countries, each country on the average has three telecom operators. So, Africa has 150 telecom operators and so it is impossible to test with all. So, we select the leaders.

For example, in this territory, Airtel seems aggressive and working and cares for the optimisation. Not all operators care for the optimisation and not all telecom companies want to work with a chipset company to test Wi-Fi and to test cellular connection.

All the suppliers like Samsung, OPPO and the factories that make the router are all our customers in Asia. We work as a reliable bridge to the manufacturers.

Any new technology, be it fintech, tracking for vehicles or routers, company like Airtel will leverage our knowledge of the supply chain. That is because nobody understands the electronic supply chain like the chip set companies. It is like the main ingredient in a meal. If you to make an electronic device, the first thing is the chip set. The manufacturers of battery, plastic component, memory, display, everything, are controlled by the chipset and any company like Airtel will leverage our solutions.

TE: What do you think is the future of technology globally as we continue to see efforts to blur the divide between the physical and digital world through artificial intelligence (AIs) and Virtual Reality (VR)?

Rami Osman: With the next generation of virtual assistants, we have started to see the connection between the physical and digital worlds. We now have text-based AI assistants. So, I think going forward more of these intelligence will go to the clients’ side.

MediaTek next year will have some announcement about this, when we move from the stage of only cloud-based, text format AI interaction interactions that generate pictures and stuffs like that, to more like business, entertainment, hospitality with active AI generation on the clients’ side.

I think starting next year, if the time is ripe, the platform suppliers will move their AIs from just the current status to better web-search and some virtual and writing services for all aspects of life. I think next generation of AI platforms on the cloud would better merge the physical and the virtual and make it a reliable experience.

TE: We are seeing more MediaTek-powered devices like smartphones, wearable connectivity and more. Can you tell us more about Mediatex products?

Rami Osman: We are a consumer electronics company; we are not a connectivity, mobility or media company.

We started from media, which is where the name MediaTek came from. So, when started to listen and enjoy hundreds of MP3 sounds and USB sticks, the players were powered by our system.

So, we kept leveraging and moving to new products. So, what we learnt in the media space, we moved to TVs and what we learnt from TVs, we moved to smart phones and what we learn in smart phones, we use in tablets and internet of things (IOTs). So, there are three major categories of MediaTek products.

The first, the legacy category includes the TVs and set up boxes. You know, like the DSTV in Africa, a big part of their service uses MediaTek chips in their set up boxes, whether it is the basic set up box or the advanced over-the-top (OTT) set up box.

We have a lot of operators using our set up boxes. For TV, probably your TV at home is using a device from MediaTex, unless it is a model from Samsung or LG. That is because we have like 70 per cent of the TV market globally and most of the android TVs use MediaTek.

If you move towards computing, the computing leader globally is Intel, because of their dominance with Microsoft for a long time. In Chromebook, we are the largest globally.

Chrome is Google’s android for the laptop or hybrid or notebook forum factor. If this category progresses, we would progress. There are limitations on the progress of this category, especially with the huge success of the Macbooks and now corporates are limiting their employees to the Windows platform. But, we think that sooner or later, we would have MediaTek processing chipsets.

More or less of the same platform is used for tablets, Chromebook and smartphone. But of course, a smartphone has much wider range and we are the world’s largest chips supplier for smartphones and Android, since 2019.

Talking about media, computing and mobility and then talk about the next generation like 5G connectivity IOTs, are some of the new things that MediaTek is working on. Like I said, we power a greater percentage of global electronic devices every year.

TE: How is MediaTek adapting to ever-changing technology industry? And can you speak about some of your technologies that focuse on bridging the digital divide?

Rami Osman: We have a smart feature phone that is coming to an operator in Africa. Smart feature phone is a bridge between feature phone and smart phone. There is always enhancement of different operating system – touch screen or no touch screen, what is the price tag that will make the 2G guy jump from a $7 phone to a $20 phone, instead of jumping to a $30 phone.

The smart feature phone continues and we are doing something with one operator in November.

In terms of bridging the digital dividend, it is about mobility and access as well as finding that proposition as low as possible close to the 2G phone, to enhance migration and connect more people to the internet. If you talk about other aspects of life and digital inclusion, you also have to factor in commercial transactions. Kenya has been leading with mobile payments. But that has to do with mostly using legacy system like the SMS.

In Nigeria and other places in Africa, start-ups are coming up with different payment platforms that are affordable, secured and flexible. If you go to MCDonalds in Dubai, you can make orders through electronic terminals and you can make payments using an Andriod point of sale (PoS) terminals.

But, that is understood because it is an advanced market. But when you go to rural African communities and meet people selling mangoes who are not able to utilise their trade fully because of the problems associated with cash and she doesn’t have a bank account. How do you service those millions of SMEs and unbanked merchants using the new ideas and fintech companies in Africa? MediaTek is supplying them with very affordable, unique and secured payment terminals.

TE: How is MediaTek incorporating AIs into IoTs to support the current trend that is expanding that market?

Rami Osman: Actually, MediaTek was the first company that started talking about Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoTs).

If you look at many electronic companies, if you check their products, they have ranges of AIoTs. When we started with AIoT, people mocked it and said it was complicated, that they barely understood IOT and we were already talking of AIoT. But it is picking up. AIoT is about making the IoT or the smart machine talking to each other.

It is about machines talking to each other with a controller and a low level operating system. It can only do what the programmer tells it to do. AIot, for example, we have couple of customers, such as Amazon, who have developed home appliances with the camera that can study cooking appliances and visual status of the dish. That is just little of what the new home appliances with AIoT can do.

This four-component carrier (4CC) aggregation combination will increase the 5G deployment options for communications service providers by blending different frequency bands.

Leveraging 5G services

In an interoperability development test (IoDT), the two companies completed the 5G data call using one low-band and three mid-band channels in the sub-7GHz frequency range (FR1) bands, where typically most of the 5G data traffic is carried.

The higher throughput that this 4CC combination enables will enhance user experience with faster downloads and seamless video streaming for smartphone users and fixed wireless access subscribers. For service providers, Ericsson’s flexible Carrier Aggregation solution will allow them to maximize use of available spectrum assets to deliver high-quality 5G connectivity.

Sibel Tombaz, Head of Product Line 5G RAN at Ericsson Networks, says: “Carrier Aggregation is crucial to getting the best possible 5G performance out of scattered spectrum assets. At Ericsson, we are persistently exploring all possible frequency band combinations to boost capacity and coverage. We have also shown that Carrier Aggregation is a game changer when it comes to optimizing the combined bandwidth of allocated spectrum assets to deliver higher date rates for a greater number of users.”

HC Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication System and Partnership at MediaTek says: “The technology milestone shows MediaTek continues to be at the forefront of NR CA innovation, developing and testing the next generation of 5G SA technologies in close collaboration with industry partners such as Ericsson, ready to integrate into our leading 5G modems.”

Carrier Aggregation is key to deploying high-performing 5G networks. It provides the unique capability to combine many frequency bands, enabling higher speeds and increased cell coverage that improve capacity and user experience.

The speed boost can mean better audio and video quality for streaming users, faster file downloads, and a better working environment for digital nomads. By combining FDD spectrum with TDD spectrum, more users can benefit from carrier aggregation gains.

The downlink peak rate of nearly 4.4 Gbps was reached by combining 20MHz of AWS (Advanced Wireless Service) band, 80MHz of CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) band and 200MHz of C-band spectrum.

The test was carried out using MediaTek M80 5G modem, Ericsson’s Baseband 6648, TDD Massive MIMO radios AIR3268, AIR3239, and TDD Radio 4426.
