As we step boldly into the first hours of 2026, it is important to speak with clarity and conviction about one of the most consequential economic transformations in our nation’s recent history.

Nigeria’s new tax reform framework, comprising the Nigeria Tax Act, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, the Nigeria Revenue Service Act, and the Joint Revenue Board Act, has officially taken effect.

This reform is not a routine policy update. It is a structural reset that will shape the future of our economy, our institutions, and the prosperity of our people.

For decades, Nigerians have endured a fragmented, confusing, and often unfair tax environment. Salary earners carried the heaviest burden.

Small businesses struggled under multiple taxation. Agencies operated in silos. Compliance was difficult, and trust in the system was weak.

The 2026 tax reform finally breaks that cycle. It introduces a simpler, fairer, more transparent, and digitally aligned fiscal architecture that reflects the realities of a modern economy.

This reform is intentionally pro‑citizen. For the first time in many years, low‑income Nigerians are fully protected.

Anyone earning ₦800,000 or less annually is now exempt from personal income tax. Millions of households will feel immediate relief.

Disposable income will rise. Families will breathe easier. This is a decisive step toward fairness and social protection at a time when many are battling economic pressure.

The reform also replaces the old, opaque tax bands with a clearer and more understandable structure. Nigerians can now know exactly what they owe and why.

This transparency is essential for rebuilding trust between citizens and the state. More than fifty exemptions and reliefs have been embedded to support families, students, pensioners, and vulnerable groups. This is taxation with a human face, designed to empower, not to punish.

Our micro, small, and medium‑sized enterprises, long the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, are major beneficiaries.

The era of multiple taxation is being dismantled. Compliance is now simpler, predictable, and digitally enabled. MSMEs can finally focus on growth, innovation, and job creation instead of navigating endless levies. This is how nations build strong middle classes and resilient economies.

Corporate Nigeria also stands to gain. A predictable, harmonised tax environment boosts investor confidence. I

t signals stability. It attracts capital. It strengthens Nigeria’s position within the African Continental Free Trade Area and the global digital economy. When businesses can plan with certainty, they invest with courage.

Government agencies are equally strengthened. The reform unifies tax administration, reduces duplication, and enhances accountability.

Digital systems will minimise leakages and corruption. Revenue will flow more efficiently. Policymakers will have better data for decision‑making. A modern economy requires modern institutions, and this reform provides the foundation.

The broader national impact is profound. Increased household spending will stimulate economic activity. MSME expansion will drive employment. Improved revenue efficiency will support infrastructure, education, healthcare, and national development.

A broader and fairer tax base will reduce our dependence on oil and place Nigeria on a path of long‑term fiscal sustainability.

This is the kind of reform that aligns with the demands of the Digital Age. It supports innovation. It encourages digital adoption. It strengthens financial inclusion. It positions Nigeria to compete, not just participate, in the global economy.

As a nation, we must now ensure that this reform is implemented with integrity, transparency, and discipline. The laws are strong.

The framework is sound. The intention is clear. What remains is faithful execution. Every agency, every business, every citizen has a role to play in ensuring that this reform delivers its full promise.

Nigeria stands at the threshold of a new fiscal era, one that is fairer, smarter, more inclusive, and more aligned with the future we must build.

The 2026 tax reform is not merely a policy shift; it is a national opportunity. If we embrace it with seriousness and unity, it will become one of the most transformative economic interventions in our democratic journey.

This is the moment to move forward with confidence.

From economic downturns to global crises, Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises, MSMEs have continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience and adaptability, in facilitating economic growth and development across borders.

Driven by the increased need to improve access to financial services to power sustained and inclusive progress, Africa’s fastest growing financial institution according to the Financial Times, Moniepoint MFB has reiterated its commitment to providing peerless and holistic support for, MSMEs in order to boost their capacity to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, while promoting innovation, creativity, and sustainable business practices across the country.

According to the United Nations, MSMEs account for over 90% of businesses and 60-70% of employment worldwide.

These enterprises make up 50% of global GDP. They contribute to the global economy and sustain livelihoods, particularly among the working poor, youth, women, and workers in vulnerable situations.

It will be recalled that following a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly in April 2017, 27th of June was designated as “Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day” to raise awareness of the tremendous contributions of MSMEs to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking on the commemoration of this year’s World MSME Day, Babatunde Olofin, the managing director, Moniepoint MFB, noted that MSMEs can lead the charge toward a sustainable and prosperous future with the proper support from governments, financial institutions, and consumers at large while explaining that enablers like Moniepoint is willing to partner with all stakeholders to  can create an environment that supports MSMEs in their efforts to invest, trade, and thrive in local and global markets, harnessing the attendant developmental benefits.

“We recognize that MSMEs are the lifeblood of the Nigerian economy. Millions of people depend on them everyday for food, daily necessities, and sustenance. For businesses across Nigeria, we have just one promise – we’re always going to be here to make you happy. As we celebrate this year’s World MSME Day, we must all acknowledge the hard work, dedication, and perseverance of MSMEs and the driving the charge to not only bolster economic stability but also foster sustainable development, helping to eradicate poverty and improve quality of life for Nigerians,” Olofin said.

He continued, “on a day like this, we must renew our commitment to join hands – agencies of government, private sector operators, and all stakeholders – to continue supporting MSMEs through policies, funding, and capacity-building initiatives. By empowering MSMEs, we pave the way for a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous future for all, especially the coming generations.”

Moniepoint MFB has been widely recognized for its innovative efforts at giving small businesses access to digital financial services, including the ability to accept payments, access working capital loans and manage their finances, that helps them to increase productivity, serve customers better, and ultimately to grow.

In a bid to look out and champion the survival of small business even as the world celebrates MSMES, the financial services powerhouse recently provided incentives to some business owners across Nigeria to ensure the lights are kept on.

Gift vouchers ranging from 3 months worth of inventory restock for a general retail services provider to two months worth of sewing material to a tailor even as a food & drinks supplier received a fuel voucher in order to solve his logistics needs amongst other recipients.

The beneficiaries who expressed their gratitude to Moniepoint noted that the gesture would go a long way to boost their productivity and ensure that they can better serve their local communities.

As the sector closest to local communities, MSMEs are essential for creating local jobs, empowering women, youth, persons with disabilities and other groups in vulnerable situations.

Commemorating MSME Day is a recognition that this vital sector, who are these agents of innovation, growth, and sustainability, at the heart of our societies has tremendous potential to unlock critical pathways to accelerate SDG progress across the globe.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has restated its unflinching commitment to the effective and efficient implementation of the Federal Government’s policy direction in repositioning the youth for the digital era job opportunities through a programme tagged, Digital Job Creation for Youths (DJCY).

In press release today, personally signed by Professor Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, he said this was in line with one of the pillars of the National Digital Economic Policy and Strategy, (NDEPS 2020-2030), which is to further accelerate economic growth in digital literacy and skills.

Over 2,000 Nigerian youths have, so far, benefited from this programme from the Six (6) Geopolitical Zones of the country while the ongoing edition has 600 youths being trained.

He explained that the DJCY programme is designed to enhance the skills of youths across all the Six (6) Geopolitical Zones of Nigeria through customised training and offer of fully-loaded laptop computers with networking devices, to equip them for the purposes of engaging in different digital entrepreneurship businesses that they may chose.

The beneficiaries are provided with free accommodation facilities for two weeks, during which resource persons in digital skills, business development and management, are engaged to retool them with their laptops to re-orientate them towards self-discovery, self-development, and self-employment.

“Some of the objectives of the DJCY include to remould youths with other skills with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) proficiency to fit into the digital economy as well as strengthen technical and scientific competences among the youths with a view to creating opportunities for self-employment.

It is also designed to improve access to ICT-enabled services such as banking, and strengthen the ICT micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector of the economy”.

The DJCY relies on the provisions of NDEPS 2020-2030, which encourage the promotion of Digital Literacy and Skills through ‘massive training of Nigerians from all walks of life in order to enable them to obtain digital literacy and other digital skills.’

Continuing, the NCC boss said that hundreds of the participants in the previous two editions have reported gainful self-employments, using the laptops and Internet connectivity tools provided by the Commission.

“It is gratifying to note that the Commission has, through the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Ali Ibrahim Pantami, received the commendations of the Federal Government for the way and manner it had efficiently and effectively designed and implemented this programme for the benefit of the Nigerian youths.

“The Commission restates its full commitment to this programme as a result of the positive feedbacks from the previous editions and the potentials it has in enhancing the digital opportunities of the Nigerian youth for the benefit of the nation’s digital economy”, Prof. Danbatta said.
