What remains largely unseen is the sleek, secure, and solid infrastructure that enables these diverse transactions reliably, at scale, across the entire economy.

Regarded as one of the top 3 payment technology forces in Africa’s largest economy, Remita is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Switch, Payment System Service Provider, Payment Terminal Service Provider and as a Super-Agent.

In 2025, Remita processed well over 100 trillion Naira of payment transactions, underscoring its position as a provider of significant financial infrastructure in Nigeria.

This scale was not driven by isolated surges but by sustained, day-to-day activity spanning transaction switching for financial institutions, corporate and public payments processing, and the enablement of consumer financial flows, reinforcing its central role in the economy.

Remita also enabled access to over 15,000 products and services across 180 countries, further establishing its role as an invisible backbone connecting businesses, institutions, and individuals within Africa’s largest economy. It illustrates a defining paradox of modern infrastructure: the more essential it becomes, the less visible it appears.

Within the fintech and banking industries, this role is often described as “the rails” – the underlying tracks on which Nigeria’s payment ecosystem runs. Like electricity through power lines or water through pipes, Remita’s impact is most pronounced where secured and reliable execution is non-negotiable.

Across corporate payments, institutional disbursements, large-scale revenue collection, and complex multi-party transactions, Remita operates as a trusted national infrastructure, where even minor disruptions can have cascading consequences.

Throughout 2025, Remita supported revenue collection and disbursements across the federal, state, and local governments, operating reliably to ensure the wheels of government operations grounded smoothly to avoid delayed salaries, stalled public services, and erosion of public trust.

Sustained infrastructure uptime reinforced a core principle of modern governance: when systems function seamlessly, confidence is preserved.

On any day, Remita enables a civil servant in Gombe to receive her salary, a contractor in Kogi to be seamlessly paid, a student in Enugu to pay university fees, a resident of Abuja to pay for water, a property owner to pay land use charge in Lagos, and a contravening citizen to pay FRSC anywhere across the country.

These millions of transactions occur concurrently, at scale, and without friction, by design.

2025 marked Remita’s progression toward continental relevance. Through strategic integration with the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), Remita has laid the foundation for simplified cross-border African payments – reducing dependency on third-party currencies and enabling businesses to transact across borders with greater ease.

“As Nigeria’s digital economy becomes more interconnected with the rest of Africa, the role of infrastructure becomes even more consequential,” explains ‘DeRemi Atanda, managing director of Remita. “Our responsibility is to build systems that can support that future. We are not just building for Nigeria. We are building infrastructure that can support Africa’s digital economy.”

AI was another frontier where Remita demonstrated industry leadership in 2025. Its deep understanding of the need for a shift from automation to intelligence led to its release of a landmark fintech AI report, which positioned Nigeria within global conversations on the application of artificial intelligence in financial services.

More than thought leadership, the report signaled commitment to building payment infrastructure that is not only resilient at scale, but increasingly responsive, predictive, and aligned with the realities of modern financial ecosystems.

Financial inclusion and access to financial services by yet a large population continued to be a major discussion in 2025.

Through partnerships with agent networks such as Moniepoint, NIPOST and Paga, Remita further extended services beyond traditional banking touchpoints – bringing formal financial systems closer to individuals and small businesses, particularly in underbanked communities.

In the works from Remita is a next-generation mobile app that generated a lot of buzz in Q4 2025 when it entered a public beta.

Built on the same backbone enterprise-grade infrastructure, the app has amazing features like multi-bank account management, esusu groups, discounted airline tickets, recurring payments, international payments with local currency, and others in development that will surely excite the market. The public market launch of the app is scheduled for Q1 2026.

Remita remains the core infrastructure behind Nigeria’s digital economy and is increasingly becoming a cornerstone of Africa’s financial future.

As the continent moves toward greater integration and rail-play becomes the most crucial element, the platforms that matter most won’t be the loudest or the flashiest.

They will be the ones that work, consistently and at scale, enabling prosperity for millions while remaining largely invisible to those they serve. That’s the mark of truly transformative infrastructure, and the story of Remita’s impact in 2025.

  • Remita Payment Services Limited (RPSL) is a leading Nigerian fintech company committed to simplifying financial transactions for individuals, businesses, and public institutions. Through innovative payment infrastructure and enterprise tools, RPSL enables its customers to collect, disburse, and manage funds securely and efficiently. As a trusted partner in Nigeria’s digital economy, Remita continues to champion inclusive growth through technology-driven financial empowerment.

When Global Policy Hits Your Mailbox: NIPOST Announces New $80 Duty on U.S. Shipments https://techeconomy.ng/when-global-policy-hits-your-mailbox-nipost-announces-new-80-duty-on-u-s-shipments/ https://techeconomy.ng/when-global-policy-hits-your-mailbox-nipost-announces-new-80-duty-on-u-s-shipments/#comments Fri, 29 Aug 2025 13:39:56 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=166174 It began with a standard parcel, a thoughtful gift or an essential shipment, departing from a Nigerian home.

But from August 29, 2025, sending that package to the United States comes with an unexpected extra: a flat $80 prepaid customs duty, applied right at NIPOST’s point of acceptance.

This new norm is not born out of local policy but stems from a sweeping U.S. directive under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), effectively ending the duty-free de minimis exemptions for all global postal operators, according to the Guardian report.

For many Nigerians, from online sellers to expatriates sending personal items, the seemingly small disruption ripples outward.

Transit and processing times are already stretching longer, as airlines and cargo carriers adopt more stringent procedures for U.S.-bound parcels.

On arrival, every shipment will undergo additional customs scrutiny, adding potential delays.

NIPOST, aware of the disruption, isn’t standing idle. They’ve opened dialogues with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and airline partners, hoping to buffer customers from the impact and safeguard delivery reliability.

This regulatory pivot has larger implications. It touches the heartbeat of cross-border e-commerce, stretches logistics channels, and amplifies costs for small businesses and individuals alike. With traditional duty-free thresholds now off the table, every parcel now carries a heavier burden.

Why This Matters for Nigeria’s Digital Economy

  1. E-commerce Strain: Small-scale exporters who thrived on low-cost shipments will now face tighter margins, threatening their competitiveness in international markets.
  2. Logistics Bottlenecks: Delay concerns could ripple across supply chains, jeopardizing delivery timelines and customer satisfaction.
  3. Cost Pressures: The $80 charge may be negligible for large volumes, but for single shipments or low-value goods, it’s a hefty increase.
  4. Regulatory Precedent: Nigeria, and indeed postal services worldwide, must grapple with policy shifts originating beyond national borders. This illustrates the fragility of global logistics to geopolitical change.

Takeaway

The new U.S. duty rule is more than a customs update, it’s a pivotal moment revealing how global policy can jolt local economies.

As Nigeria navigates this challenge, coordination, transparency, and innovation will be key to keeping goods, and the digital economy, moving forward.

This was disclosed by the Postmaster-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, during a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House, Marina.

Odeyemi emphasised that Lagos, being Nigeria’s economic growth centre, is standing firm to benefit from improved postal services that support small businesses and drive innovation in the rapidly growing e-commerce sector.

She noted that NIPOST’s focus on last-mile delivery would ensure smoother connectivity within Lagos and across the nation.

“I see Lagos State as a critical partner in achieving this vision, given its status as the economic hub of Nigeria.” She further noted that strengthening NIPOST’s services here can help bring better support to the entrepreneurs and individuals driving the e-commerce growth.

She also commended the state’s administration for its infrastructural achievements and noted how December’s festive events, often referred to as ‘Detty December’, attracted a significant number of visitors, boosting local commerce.

During the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged NIPOST to embrace innovation and rethink traditional approaches to service delivery. He highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to modernise operations and enhance the ease of doing business.

You must challenge the status quo and think creatively to reposition NIPOST for the future. Change is essential to meet today’s demands and prepare for the years ahead,” the governor advised.

Sanwo-Olu also assured Odeyemi of Lagos State’s readiness to collaborate with NIPOST, particularly in upgrading its service centres and improving the movement of goods within the city. He reiterated his administration’s focus on creating an environment that fosters innovation and economic growth.

In addition to its plans with Lagos, NIPOST has reported positive revenue growth, attributing this to improved service quality and operational efficiency.

Odeyemi explained that the agency had begun renovating facilities in key cities, including Lagos, as part of its strategy to sustain this momentum and remain relevant in a fast-changing world.

Through its partnership with KOICA, Galaxy Backbone has ensured that the platform leverages the latest technologies, prioritizing user experience, accessibility, and cybersecurity.

KOICA has provided technical expertise, capacity-building support, and funding for the development of the portal, underscoring the shared commitment to Nigeria’s e-government strategy.

Key Highlights of the Government Service Portal:

Accelerating Digital Transformation: The GSP supports the Federal Government’s commitment to digitize public services, enabling more efficient governance and ensuring that all Nigerians, regardless of location, can access essential services.

Improving Government-to-Citizen Engagement: By reducing the need for face-to-face interactions and offering real-time service tracking, the portal fosters a more transparent and responsive government, enhancing citizens’ trust in public institutions.

Secure and Accessible Services: The GSP is designed with robust cybersecurity features, ensuring that citizens’ data remains protected.

It is also mobile-friendly and accessible in multiple languages, making it easy for citizens from all parts of Nigeria to interact with government services online.

KOICA’s Role:

KOICA has provided strategic support, leveraging its expertise in e-governance and technology-driven public service delivery.

KOICA’s involvement ensures that the GSP aligns with international best practices and benefits from the lessons learned in similar successful projects globally.

Engagement Workshop with 12 Pilot Agencies:
The engagement workshop, which took place today, brought together senior officials from 12 pilot government agencies, including FMCIDE, NIMC, SMEDAN, NCC, NIPOST, FRSC, NAFDAC, NYSC, NPF, NIS, BPP and NEPC.

The goal of the workshop was to familiarize these agencies with the GSP’s features, capabilities, and integration process, and to ensure seamless service delivery as the portal goes live.

Speaking at the workshop, the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, who represented the Honourable Minister, highlighted the significance of this project and the need deepened collaboration and deeper citizen engagement. ‘The Government Service Portal has the potential to change lives and I believe that through and efficient and effective collaboration we will achieve a lot for our nation’.  Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanyu, Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone, emphasized the significance of this initiative in transforming how government services are delivered to Nigerians. He noted:

“The Government Service Portal is a testament to Nigeria’s dedication to embracing digitalisation for improved governance. Galaxy Backbone is proud to lead this initiative, working alongside KOICA to make public services more efficient, transparent, and accessible to all. With the engagement of these pilot agencies, we are taking a major step toward a fully digitized public service ecosystem that will benefit every Nigerian citizen.”

From KOICA’s side, the Country Director, Mr. Sunjil SON, expressed the agency’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s journey toward an inclusive digital economy, stating:

“KOICA is delighted to partner with Galaxy Backbone and the Government of Nigeria in delivering a platform that will change how citizens interact with their government. This initiative aligns with our broader mission of promoting sustainable development through technology and innovation.”

Looking Ahead:

According to the statement signed by Mr. Chidi Okpala, head, Media & Corporate Communications at GBB, the successful integration of the 12 pilot agencies is a precursor to a broader rollout of the GSP across all government ministries, departments, and agencies.

This initiative will serve as the backbone of Nigeria’s e-government strategy, reducing delays, improving transparency, and empowering citizens to engage more effectively with their government.

SMEDAN inks MoU with NIPOST to Offer 15% Logistics Discount to SMEs https://techeconomy.ng/smedan-inks-mou-with-nipost-to-offer-15-logistics-discount-to-smes/ https://techeconomy.ng/smedan-inks-mou-with-nipost-to-offer-15-logistics-discount-to-smes/#respond Fri, 16 Aug 2024 07:22:58 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=140101 The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Postal Service  to offer a special 15 per cent discount on logistics services to small businesses.

Charles Odii, the director-general of SMEDAN and Mrs Tola Odeyemi, the postmaster general of Federation, signed the MoU on Wednesday in Abuja.

Odii said that the partnership would improve business conditions, expand sales, and lower operational costs for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria.

He described the collaboration as a direct response to feedback from SMEs regarding the high cost of logistics and its negative impact on sales.

“We are signing today 15 per cent maybe in another three months the postmaster can make it 50 per cent or review it better.

“This is the best time for this partnership, and in another three months, we are hoping that we can come back here and review what we have done.

“We will articulate clearly how much we helped small businesses in Nigeria save through our monitoring and evaluation department, and then we can continue to see how we can better this partnership.

“The discount offer will commence on Monday, August 26, and will be available to SMEs registered with SMEDAN in two ways: online pickups and walk-ins,” Odii said.

According to him, the feedback received by the agency through its engagements with SMEs revealed that, in some cases, the cost of delivery exceeds the cost of items.

The Director-General said this discouraged sales and limited commercial opportunities for SMEs in their immediate environment.

He said the partnership would leverage NIPOST’s national presence and infrastructure and its ongoing reform and modernisation efforts under the leadership of the Postmaster General of the agency.

Odii urged small business owners that are not registered with the agency to do well to register so as to benefit from the initiative and other initiatives of SMEDAN.

On her part, the Postmaster General said the partnership was long overdue and would contribute to the achievement of inclusive economic growth.

Odeyemi acknowledged that MSMEs, which represent over 90 per cent of businesses in the country and contribute half of the gross domestic product, serve as the backbone of the economy.

“So, we are here to partner with you, to partner with your mandates for small and medium enterprises in Nigeria to come on board our platform, as it is a platform for inclusive economic growth.

“I know that this partnership is one for the ages, one that will spur Nigeria’s economic growth.

“Any MSME that is registered with SMEDAN gets access to a 15 per cent discount, and it runs as long as Nigeria runs.

“Although 15 per cent discount might not look much, you have to realise that NIPOST prices are already socially oriented,” she said.

The postmaster said that through the partnership, both agencies would utilise their offices and stations nationwide to initiate, process, and fast-track deliveries.

“It will ensure that small businesses can move goods to remote parts of the country efficiently, timely, and affordably.

“To ensure a seamless and positive experience for SMEs, both agencies will maintain a dedicated customer support unit to respond to complaints and address any issues that may arise.

According to sources, President Bola Tinubu had to intervene to stop workers of the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) from shutting out the new Chief Executive Officer, Tola Odeyemi.

By implication the erstwhile CEO, Adepoju Adeyemi has been relieved of his duties at the Service.

President Bola Tinubu had last week sacked Adeyemi Adepoju as CEO/Post Master General of the agency and appointed Odeyemi.

The announcement made by Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesperson, was part of the leadership shuffle implemented for agencies and parastatals under the Ministry of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy.
