Drawing from personal reflections, practical insights, and a forward-looking vision, Banigbe urged Nigerians to rethink approaches to learning, work, and growth to build a prosperous, inclusive, and innovation-led society. He emphasised that the traditional model of “learning once and working forever” is now obsolete.

With Nigeria projected to become the world’s third most populous nation by 2050, with 70 percent of its citizens under 30, continuous upskilling, digital learning, and adaptability are not optional—they are existential,” he said.

Obafemi Banigbe highlighted the need to democratise access to digital tools, ensuring every Nigerian child has the same opportunities as peers in developed economies.

He called for the creation of Afrocentric educational content, including culturally relevant cartoons, to help children learn science, mathematics, and history through familiar cultural references rather than foreign identities that disconnect them from their environment.

T2 CEO also advocated for a national shift from a culture that prizes certificates and training hours to one that rewards competence, innovation, and problem-solving. 

He envisioned a civil service and workforce driven by solutions rather than processes, noting that while artificial intelligence can analyse and automate, it cannot dream, uphold ethics, or create new nations, a reminder of the enduring human advantage.

Furthermore, T2 CEO Banigbe encouraged the adoption of cost-effective training models such as online platforms, virtual cohorts, and open-source learning, while acknowledging the continued value of global exposure where local resources fall short.

During an interactive question-and-answer session, Banigbe addressed concerns around affordability, accessibility, and the role of self-driven digital education in shaping Nigeria’s future-ready workforce.

He also reaffirmed that T2 is undergoing its own transformation, committed to delivering world-class services as a proudly Nigerian brand.

In recognition of his contribution to national dialogue and thought leadership, NITAD President James Bulus presented Banigbe with an Award of Excellence.

The three-year agreement enables 9mobile subscribers to roam seamlessly on MTN Nigeria’s expansive network, significantly extending 9mobile’s coverage and improving service quality for its customers.

The partnership signals a shift toward greater industry collaboration, aligning with the NCC’s vision for a more inclusive and efficient digital ecosystem.

Beyond infrastructure sharing, the agreement drives greater operational efficiency, stronger connectivity, and an enhanced user experience.

It also paves the way for deeper collaboration between the two telcos, most notably a proposed spectrum leasing deal, in which 9mobile will lease its 900MHz (5MHz) and 1800MHz (15MHz) bands to MTN for three years, further strengthening MTN’s network capacity and service quality.

“This partnership marks a bold resurgence for 9mobile,” said Obafemi Banigbe, CEO of 9Mobile. “It empowers us to meet the needs of our customers, especially youthful and enterprise users, by delivering consistent, high-quality service as we roll out city by city in the weeks ahead.”

The most recent NCC statistics revealed that Nigeria had 219 million active mobile subscribers as of mid-2024, with teledensity hitting 101.4%.

It’s no surprise that mobile data usage is rising meteorically, led by 4G and 5G rollouts. But then, even with these statistics, the leadership of CEOs is what will truly determine whether companies thrive or stumble.

As Africa’s telecom market is projected to reach $66.61 billion by 2025, these CEOs face a common threat: tariff review.

The need to review telecoms tariffs has been trending for quite a long time but became more pronounced since President Bola Tinubu moved to Aso Rock in May 2023. 

The reasons are obvious. As Nigeria moves to deepen its digital economy, the need for telecom operators to upgrade their network infrastructure to deliver more data capacity, cannot be over-emphasized. This is key to a sustainable future. 

For close to 12 years, telecom tariffs have remained static despite the dramatic increase in operating expenses, which have surged by over 300% in the last 18 to 24 months alone. 

We suspect that NCC’s hands might be tied in the sense that President Tinubu’s government might not want an ‘immediate upward review of telecom tariffs due to the backlashes from the famous fuel subsidy removal and the electricity tariff increase – including the ‘Band A-D’ discriminatory service provisioning arrangement. 2025 is also crucial for Nigeria’s economy in terms of development and growth. 2026 is a political year preceding the election year – 2027.

But truth be told, Nigeria’s economy will even sink further if telcos pull the plug. 

The President must summon the courage to surmount the pressure to suffocate the telecommunications industry.

It has become essential to realign telecom service pricing structure with economic realities!

Nigeria has ushered in the high-speed 5G era for AI, Cloud computing, Data science applications, and Blockchain era. Nevertheless, more investments are required towards building a more resilient network such that the operators can meet the regulator’s KPIs.

All of these require significant investments which are sourced from the international markets at costs denominated in US Dollars.

In the past three to four years, for instance, the dollar has gone from exchanging for about N500 to over N1,600.

The challenges continue: The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has just authorised the telcos to disconnect nine banks from their USSD platform. Why? These banks have been accused of not paying for services rendered to them by the telcos to the tune of over N200 billion naira.

For the tower companies; a very crucial segment of the market, they are daily faced with issues around fibre cuts, vandalism, inflation and others.

All eyes are on these CEOs. How will the operators continue providing high-quality services and meeting the growing demand for digital connectivity, should the government play down the issue of upward reviews of the tariffs? Tough question, right?

Another key achievement in 2024 was IHS’s ongoing contract renewals with telecom companies, including MTN and Airtel. His insightful perspectives offered valuable insights into combating identity theft, a major threat to African electronic money transfer security.

Speaking as a panelist in a session moderated by Nick Cook, the chief innovation officer at AIR, Banigbe outlined how telcos play a pivotal role in protecting financial transactions.

“Fraud is fundamentally a human challenge, not just a technological one,” he remarked, emphasising that identity theft remains central to electronic money transfer fraud and requires a community-driven, human-centred approach.

He emphasized the critical role of telecommunications companies as guardians of security in the financial ecosystem.

He outlined the proactive measures 9mobile and other telcos are taking to fortify financial systems, focusing on several key areas. Banigbe highlighted the integration of Know Your Customer (KYC) systems, which leverage collaborations with national ID databases, banking records, and mobile number registries to enhance customer verification.

He also stressed the importance of robust security tools, including SIM registration, Biometric authentication (fingerprint and facial recognition), and One-Time Password (OTP)-based authentication. These measures he said collectively strengthen verification processes, ensuring a more secure financial ecosystem.

Banigbe reiterated the importance of partnerships between financial institutions and payment platforms. These collaborations enable the secure sharing of intelligence, ensuring compliance with data protection laws. This, in turn, facilitates the detection of suspicious activities while maintaining privacy.

He also highlighted the need to address delays in fraud tracking. To achieve this, he advocated for the deployment of real-time blacklisting mechanisms. This would enable swift action on reported incidents, preventing fraudsters from exploiting time gaps.

While highlighting the need for industry-wide collaboration, Banigbe pointed to the cost-effectiveness of shared investments in advanced security architecture.

“No single organisation can tackle this alone. A united effort among telcos, financial institutions, and regulators is key to safeguarding our financial systems,” he asserted.

The panel discussion, which featured other notable speakers, including Ikenna Ndugbu (Moniepoint), Sheila Senfuma (Consumers International), and Modupe Ladipo (Prosperar Consulting), explored diverse aspects of combating digital payment fraud.

They discussed the role of robust compliance frameworks and transaction monitoring tools; addressed accessibility challenges for vulnerable populations, including people with disabilities like visual impairment that disallows them from baseline financial literacy; highlighted the specific vulnerabilities faced by women in informal financial systems and advocated for culturally sensitive financial inclusion strategies.

Banigbe further remarked on the need for proper access control within organisations to combat possible internal staff collusion with external fraudsters to make security systems more vulnerable.

“Regulating access will help prevent fraudulent activities within organisations,” he said, pointing to the need for stronger internal controls to safeguard sensitive processes.

He spotlighted the crucial role of telcos in creating a secure and inclusive digital financial ecosystem. Collaboration, Banigbe stressed, is essential to achieving lasting results in the fight against fraud. “It is an ecosystem, and there should be a joint effort to enlighten the public on digital payment fraud and advocate for victims of fraud,” he concluded, calling for unified action among telcos, financial institutions, and regulators.

With over 100 participants attending the conference, the collective commitment to combat digital payment fraud is evident.

Discussions continue to focus on leveraging technology, driving public awareness, and strengthening collaborative frameworks to address the pervasive threat of identity theft.
