Brilliant students from less privileged backgrounds are set to benefit from a scholarship programme launched today by leading Pan African organization, Paradigm Initiative (PIN).

As a way of giving back to the Ajegunle community and recognising notable individuals who have played vital roles in PIN’s early beginning in Ajegunle, the organization has established the Ajegunle Legacy Scholarship, aptly named after the area to support resident youth/students in securing university education in technology courses such as Information Technology (IT), Software Development and Computer Engineering, among others.

The Project has two arms. The prize arm and the scholarship arm. The prize arm will support two young persons (one male and one female) from low-income families resident in Ajegunle to acquire university education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) or Law annually.

This prize is named after the late Taiwo Bankole Ogunyemi, one of the foremost volunteers at PIN’s Life Program (now known as LIFE Legacy Program). This award is aimed at immortalising the late Ogunyemi’s name for the role he played in improving the lives of young people across Nigeria, especially in Ajegunle.

The scholarship arm on the other hand will also support two young persons (one male and one female) from low-income families residing in Ajegunle to get advanced software development training annually.

Paradigm Initiative, which has for more than 15 years been connecting young under-served Africans with digital opportunities and ensuring protection of their rights online started operations in the area in 2007 in a tiny cybercafé known as Stadnet before expanding its footprints across Africa.

The organization, which advocates for digital rights and inclusion on the continent has offices in Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Zambia, Zimbabwe, The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Kenya from where it coordinates its operations across Central, East, Southern and West Africa and beyond.

Through the organization’s flagship LIFE Program alone, PIN has impacted the lives of more than 6,700 under-served African youth with improved livelihoods through digital opportunities and protection of their online rights.

Speaking during the launch of the programme in Ajegunle, Mr. ‘Gbenga Sesan, the organization’s Executive Director said:  “We named the prize arm of the project after the late Taiwo Bankole Ogunyemi, who was one of the foremost volunteers to our work in Ajegunle in recognition of the sacrifices he made towards ensuring that young people living in underserved communities like Ajegunle had access to skills and opportunities that would enable them to improve their lot.”

On her part, Nnenna Paul-Ugochukwu, the organization’s Chief Operating Officer,  said: “Through this two-armed project, PIN will be awarding a prize to two young persons resident in Ajegunle (one male and one female) covering four years of university education to study any course in STEM and Law in any Public University in Nigeria and a scholarship to another two young persons (one male and one female) to pursue training in advance software development.”

The family of the late Ogunyemi welcomed the utilization of the late Taiwo’s name for the Prize arm adding that they are convinced that doing so after the late Taiwo is a good way to immortalise him.

Thank you for the faith and the thoughts put into considering his name worthy of this cause,” the family stated.

The LIFE Legacy Program is a capacity-building initiative designed to improve the lives of under-served youth in host communities. LIFE is an acronym that stands for Life Skills, ICTs, Financial Readiness, and Entrepreneurship. The program targets youth who do not have the financial capacity to acquire relevant Information Communication Technology (ICT), Entrepreneurial and Life skills that can make them compete in the workplace.

Paradigm Initiative (PIN) builds ICT-enabled support systems and advocates for digital rights in order to improve the livelihoods of under-served young Africans. The organization has worked in communities in Nigeria since 2007 and across Africa since 2017, building experience, community trust, and an organizational culture that positions it as a leading social enterprise in ICT for Development and Digital Rights on the continent.

Paradigm Initiative is joining stakeholders within the digital sphere through an international effort to commemorate Data Privacy Week, to empower individuals and businesses to respect, and safeguard the privacy of online users.

“Digital Rights are Human Rights and to that end, we call on stakeholders, policymakers, governments, academia, businesses, and the general public to be intentional in sensitizing the masses and cautiously considering measures to ensure that the right to privacy and the is given due consideration in the way data is collected and stored”, says Valery Njiaba, communications officer, Paradigm Initiative.

While advising citizens to take action during the Data Privacy Week and beyond in protecting their data, Njiaba explained that Paradigm Initiative will persist in its efforts to monitor and support the rightful use of data collection, and its protection.

“We have also kept a watchful eye on the policy landscape of data protection in Africa as well the authorities in charge of this mandate. We have drafted several policy briefs, carried out workshops and research to best evaluate data protection situations in Africa, as well as developed several tools to help curb the malaise within the continent.

“Some of our recent publications include the DPA report that maps out the state of data protection legislation and authorities in Africa, Assessing Data Protection in Nigeria and Towards a Data Protection Legislative Framework in Nigeria which highlights the impact and effectiveness of the Nigerian data protection regulatory framework across different thematic areas, and Nigeria’s legislative and regulatory journey towards enacting comprehensive data protection legislation”, he said.

These reports offer some great conclusions and recommendations to ease data protection and privacy.

“Equally important are our tools of impact such as ripoti.africa a platform that enables online users to report digital rights violations in Africa including breaches of online privacy, and ayeta.africa a proactive toolkit for African digital rights actors aimed at addressing the growing need to safeguard digital rights defenders, journalists , whistleblowers, and others working with sensitive information in the global South.

“As every activity involving digital technologies leaves a trace, we are optimistic that stakeholders and major actors within the digital space will use the Data Privacy Week to educate users about privacy in the digital age, how to identify whether their personal information is being used, what measures to be taken to prevent data breaches and how to seek redress where necessary”, he further explained.

Dozens of young people in Namibia have completed a gamified training programme designed to sharpen their digital rights awareness and online safety skills, as Paradigm Initiative (PIN) expands its continental push for digital inclusion.

The programme, known as the Digital Rights and Inclusion Board Learning Experience (DRIBLE), is an initiative of Paradigm Initiative, a pan-African non-profit focused on digital rights and inclusion.

Its rollout in Namibia marks another stop in the organisation’s Africa tour, where it is convening students and youth communities around conversations on online safety, data protection, and digital participation.

Developed with support from the Open Society Foundations, DRIBLE uses a custom-designed board game to simplify complex digital rights issues.

The goal is to make conversations about data privacy, online harassment, and internet governance more accessible to young Africans.

Namibia joins a growing list of campuses where the initiative has been piloted, including the University of Lagos in Nigeria, Dakar American University of Science and Technology (DAUST) in Senegal, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Kenya, and the University of Zambia.

PIN says it is targeting 20 million people through its broader digital inclusion and digital rights interventions.

Speaking at the Namibia launch, ‘Gbenga Sesan, executive director of Paradigm Initiative, challenged participants to see themselves as more than passive users of technology.

“You are digital natives. So the question for you is, ‘what are the skills I need to pick up and invest in now?’ You must build the relevant skills that will make you stand out,” he said.

Nashilongo Gervasius Nakale of NamTshuwe Digital Hub, the local partner for the launch, urged participants to look beyond simply using technology.

She encouraged them to understand how digital tools intersect with rights, identity, and society, especially as many of them consider careers in tech-related fields.

In his keynote address, Edward Nepolo, head of the Computer Science Department at the National University of Science and Technology, called on African youth to move from consumption to creation.

“Africa is not a promise for the future anymore, it is a force to be reckoned with now. We should not be comfortable being consumers of technology; we should take our space and play our part in the development and shaping of technology,” he said.

Founded in Lagos in 2007, Paradigm Initiative now operates in six African countries, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, and says it has impacted more than 150,000 young Africans.

DRIBLE builds on its existing platforms such as Ripoti, a digital rights reporting tool, and Ayeta, a digital security toolkit for activists and vulnerable communities.

For PIN, the Namibia rollout is more than another campus event. It is part of a longer-term strategy to equip African youth with the knowledge and tools to participate safely and meaningfully in the continent’s fast-evolving digital economy, while ensuring their rights remain central to that growth.

As the world commemorates Data Privacy Week, under the theme, “Take Control of Your Data,” Paradigm Initiative (PIN) applauds countries that have enacted or amended their data protection legislation over the past year to safeguard individuals’ privacy rights.

However, PIN is not happy with African countries yet to enact data protection laws.

Data Privacy Week commemorates the signing of Convention 108 on January 28, 1981, which was the first legally binding international treaty on privacy and data protection.

Djibouti, the Gambia, and Burundi enacted data protection legislation in June 2025, September 2025, and January 2026, respectively.

“We acknowledge Botswana, whose law came into force in January 2025, and Algeria, which amended its data protection law in July 2025 to include obligations regarding the appointment of Data Protection Officers. Beyond the adoption of data protection laws,” PIN stated, urging all relevant data protection authorities to ensure the implementation of laws safeguarding data privacy and to guarantee the enforcement of data protection laws to safeguard data subjects’ rights.

Through its work, PIN has challenged rights violations in 2024, in Nigeria, where unauthorised websites claimed to hold and provide access to sensitive personal and financial data of Nigerian citizens for as little as ₦100 Naira.

In 2024, following PIN’s strategic litigation efforts, the United Bank of Africa (UBA) PLC in Nigeria was ordered to pay its customer N 8,000,000 for gross violation of her right to data privacy by unilaterally opening a domiciliary account for Miss Folashade Molehin without her consent.

In 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria, delivered a precedent-setting judgment against Domino’s Pizza, a restaurant chain owned and operated by Eat’n’Go, for using a customer’s data for direct marketing purposes.

The court established that the restaurant’s usage of the applicant, Chukwunweike Araka Akosa’s data for direct marketing purposes was unlawful and violated Section 37 of Nigeria’s Constitution and Sections 25 and 26 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023. Akosa was awarded N3,000,000 (Three Million Naira) upon establishing that the restaurant sent him direct unsolicited marketing messages via his phone without his consent.

The case was reported through Paradigm Initiative’s Ripoti Platform, after which the organisation supported the applicant’s legal redress.

Through Ripoti, PIN documents, responds to and addresses digital rights violations including data privacy breaches in Africa and is interested in supporting victims through pro-bono legal representation and other forms of support to protect victims of digital rights violations.

Despite these strides, the absence of robust data protection legislation in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, South Sudan, Sudan, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea and Western Sahara poses significant risks to individual data privacy.

The existence of such laws signals progressive steps towards safeguarding privacy rights.

PIN calls on countries without data protection laws, including Liberia, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, and Libya, to enact laws and policies to safeguard the rights of data subjects.

As the world commemorates the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, Paradigm Initiative (PIN) is calling for big tech companies to enhance their efforts in combating hate speech on their platforms and uphold fundamental human rights online.

PIN’s 2024 Londa report documents that hate speech online is prevalent, with countries such as Angola making at least 25 content removal requests related to hate speech, harassment, and political misinformation.

Globally, hate speech has contributed to incitement of violence, exacerbated ethnic tensions, targeting vulnerable and marginalised communities, including women, minorities and in some instances, foreigners.

In Nigeria, in 2018, a Facebook post which showed a massacre in the Plateau state was viewed over 11000 times, resulting in ethnic conflicts that led to the killing of citizens.

In South Africa, research documents that poor content moderation practices have increased hate speech. At an International level, PIN joined other civil society organisations early in the year to condemn tech company policy changes, which are likely to have an impact on hate speech and information disorders. In India, during elections, hate speech was prevalent.

In Ethiopia, in 2021, hate speech and disinformation resulted in the killing an Ethiopian citizen after a Facebook post falsely implicated him in a scandal. Hate speech online fuels conflict and hinders progress towards sustainable development and peace in the Global South.

PIN observes the increasing sophistication of actors spreading hate speech, often leveraging emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence to maximise reach and impact.

At the same time, content moderation often falls short, especially for non-English content.

“Hate speech online is a direct attack on the dignity and safety of individuals.  We urge technology companies to commit to transparent and effective content moderation practices, especially in the age of artificial intelligence. We urge technology companies to prioritise human rights in their operations,” said Bridgette Ndlovu, Paradigm Initiative’s partnerships and engagements officer.

The alarming spread of hate speech online threatens human rights and democratic values.  PIN’s latest Londa report notes that as digital platforms continue to grow, governments globally face the difficult task of enacting laws that safeguard individuals from harmful content, such as hate speech, misinformation, and online harassment, while upholding the fundamental right to free speech.

This delicate tension reflects broader global discussions about the role of government in effectively regulating digital spaces.

Additionally, governments enacting hate speech laws should refrain from arbitrary arrests and detentions of human rights defenders on charges of unlawful assembly, espionage, hate speech, and sedition. Efforts to counter hate speech should uphold freedoms of expression and not stifle legitimate speech.

PIN calls on tech companies to:

  • Invest equitably in non-English content moderation across the Global South to integrate local nuances.
  • Increase transparency in government content takedown requests to ensure requests do not infringe on the right to free expression online.
  • Enhance digital literacy, particularly in under-served regions, to ensure safe online practices.
  • Conduct human rights due diligence to identify the platform use risks and take steps to mitigate such risks, in line with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Three human rights organisations—Paradigm Initiative (PIN), Youth and Society (YAS), and the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR)—have expressed concerns over the current digital rights environment in Malawi ahead of the upcoming General Elections on 16 September 2025.

The organisations, which advocate for digital rights and inclusion in Africa and Malawi, highlighted that the elections are taking place amid the restrictive application of criminal defamation laws, such as Section 200 of the Penal Code of Malawi, which poses a threat to freedom of expression and access to information.

International standards, including Principle 22 of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information, urge States to reform criminal defamation laws in favour of civil remedies.

The organisations further noted troubling instances of arrests of journalists and citizens for articles published and posts made online.

“We note the most recent case of Julius Mithi, who was arrested after a post he made online regarding the voter registration database.

The ACHPR Declaration, which elaborates on freedom of expression and access to information under Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights—to which Malawi is a State Party—emphasises the need for States to guarantee the safety of journalists,” they stated.

They are also concerned about the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority’s (MACRA) reported procurement of a misinformation and disinformation tracking or monitoring tool, following an announcement made by MACRA on 14 January 2025.

The decision to procure surveillance technologies without safeguards such as judicial oversight, disclosure of the tool’s capabilities, and engagement with relevant stakeholders is particularly concerning as Malawi heads to elections.

PIN, CHRR, and YAS further highlight the importance of multi-stakeholder engagements during elections to address misinformation and disinformation and promote a safe, enabling online environment.

In this regard, they are urging the government to facilitate engagements with all relevant government agencies and stakeholders, such as the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), the Media Council of Malawi (MCM), and the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), to critically tackle information disorders during this election season.

“We believe this is a more sustainable way of addressing misinformation and disinformation than targeted mass communication surveillance approaches, which violate human rights.”

They further remind the government, in this election cycle, of the ACHPR Guidelines on Access to Information and Elections in Africa, which promote proactive disclosure of information by key stakeholders such as: Government Agencies, Election Management Bodies, Political Parties and Candidates, Law Enforcement Agencies, Election Observers and Monitors and Civil Society Organisations. The role of access to information is critical to the attainment of a free and fair election in this regard.

“We also urge the government to be guided by Article 17(3) of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance (ACDEG), which calls for fair and equitable access for contesting parties and candidates to state-controlled media during elections. To this end, we call for the conduct of elections that align with best practices for an enabling environment for all to vote.”

In terms of Article 31(2) of the ACDEG, State Parties shall ensure systematic and comprehensive civic education to encourage full participation in democracy and development processes.

With elections increasingly conducted using modern technology, such as biometric voter registration systems, it is essential that people with disabilities and underserved communities are digitally included to enhance their participation in electoral processes.

In view of these concerns, we call for the following:

The Government

  • To keep the internet open and accessible during elections.
  • To sensitise the electorate on the role of fact-checking.
  • To enable an environment where the media can perform their mandate offline and online without fear of arbitrary arrests or seizure of digital tools.
  • To proactively disclose critical information to inform the electorate adequately in relation to the electoral process.

The Malawi Human Rights Commission

  • To monitor digital rights during elections and calling on the government to ensure that they are promoted and protected.
  • To raise awareness, collaborating with civil society actors in sensitising the electorate on responsible use of the internet during elections.

The Telecommunications Companies in Malawi

  • To ensure enabled internet access during elections and transparency on responses to government requests relating to content or internet access.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria has delivered a precedent-setting judgement against Domino’s Pizza, a restaurant chain owned and operated by Eat’n’Go for using a customer’s data for direct marketing purposes.

Justice Emeka Nwite awarded the applicant, Chukwunweike Araka Akosa N3,000,000 (Three Million Naira) upon establishing that the restaurant sent him direct unsolicited marketing messages via his phone without his consent and went ahead to compensate him for the breach of his fundamental rights.

The court established that the restaurant’s usage of Akosa’s data for direct marketing purposes was unlawful and in violation of Section 37 of Nigeria’s Constitution and Sections 25 and 26 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.

The case was reported through Paradigm Initiative’s Ripoti Platform after which the organisation supported the applicant’s legal redress.

While delivering the judgement, Justice Emeka Nwite observed that the continued unsolicited messaging to the applicant constituted an infringement of the right to privacy and failed to meet the lawful data processing requirements under Section 25 of the Act.

While compensating Akosa for the breach of his fundamental rights, he also issued an order directing the restaurant to permanently erase the applicant’s personal data from its systems and to cease all unsolicited direct marketing communications.

Akosa’s legal battle with the restaurant started brewing on December 14th, 2023 when he observed that Dominos Pizza sent him unsolicited messages via his cell phone number, yet he had not provided his personal data to the restaurant nor consented to usage of the same for any marketing purposes.

The messages which began with the salutation ‘Hi Jumians’ had persisted and totaled 16 instances by May 25th, 2024, the court heard. Upon investigation, the court was told, it was discovered that the customer’s personal data initially shared with Jumia Food, an e-commerce platform, had been shared with Domino’s Pizza at the time of placing a food order but was used for marketing purposes without the applicant’s consent after the food order was completed. Jumia’s subsequent email response failed to resolve the issue or prevent further breaches.

Akosa, through Equibridge Attorneys (EBA), informed the court that he had written a formal letter requesting Domino’s Pizza to stop sending promotional messages, delete his personal data and pay compensation for the breach of his rights but the chain denied any wrongdoing or liability, prompting him to seek legal redress to enforce his rights under the law.

The judge noted that Jumia Food, as a data controller under Section 65 of the Nigerian Data Protection Act, 2023 was obligated to ensure the lawful processing of Akosa’s personal data.

However, he found that Jumia satisfied its duty of care by notifying Domino’s to halt the misuse of the customer’s data or breach its obligations under the Act.

The court also ruled that given there is a written agreement between Jumia and Domino’s regarding such an instance of court action exonerates Jumia from liability for the breach and puts it solely on Dominos.

Commenting on the court decision, Equibridge Attorneys (EBA) said the judgement marks a major victory for Paradigm Initiative as it singles out the importance of consent in data processing activities and upholds the privacy rights of individuals as guaranteed under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018.

“The ruling against the 2nd respondent’s (Domino’s) direct marketing practices highlights the need for businesses to comply with lawful data processing requirements. It is a judgement that affects all service providers who utilise customer data and send unsolicited marketing messages to customers. It is a judgement that establishes the right of Nigerians to the protection of their data especially from unwanted messages and advertisements,” the firm stated.

Meanwhile, Paradigm Initiative (PIN) said it was pleased to have supported this important case, which highlights the need for stronger enforcement of data protection and digital rights.

“Through our Ripoti platform, we remain committed to assisting individuals across Africa in addressing various digital rights violations. Our goal is to hold both the private sector and government accountable, ensuring that digital rights are respected and protected for all. We look forward to continuing this work and strengthening digital rights advocacy across the continent”, the CSO said.

Thirty-nine students completed Paradigm Initiative (PIN), a pan-African non-governmental organisation’s 10-week-long LIFE (Life Skills, ICT Skills, Financial Readiness, and Entrepreneurship Skills) Legacy training.

The trainees from Cohorts one and two of the programme were handed attestations of completion in a graduation ceremony held at Strathmore University, Nairobi.

According to Paradigm Initiative, this is part of efforts to bridge unemployment challenge in Kenya which has started bearing fruit following the graduation of this first batch of students from under-served communities under the LIFE Legacy Programme.

The event was graced by Mr. Timothy Were, ICT deputy director at the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy in Kenya, who highlighted the critical role of digital skills in today’s economy and the importance of empowering youth from underserved communities.

“The LIFE Legacy Programme represents more than a training course; it embodies a powerful vision of empowerment, inclusion, and opportunity… By focusing on digitally excluded individuals who lack skills, confidence, and opportunities, this programme is contributing towards bridging the digital divide and unlocking the potential of young people from underrepresented backgrounds,” Mr. Were noted.

Speaking at the same occasion, Gonline Africa Founder, Alphonce Odhiambo said with the graduation of the first and second cohort of students, a lot more needs to be done for the youth, and the role of organisations working in the digital sector is to collaborate and see how to position them in the digital economy.

Khadijah El-Usman, Paradigm Initiative’s senior Programmes Officer, Anglophone Africa, traced the origins of the LIFE Legacy programme, highlighting its impact on underserved youth and communities across the African continent.

On her part, Judith Ogutu, Paradigm Initiative’s communications manager, indicated that besides the LIFE Legacy programme, the organisation also advocates for digital rights, contributes towards policy development and scrutinises the state of digital rights and inclusion on the continent. She  presented the organisation’s digital advocacy tools, AyetaRipoti, the Londa report and the short films inspired by the report.

Launched in 2007 in Ajegunle, Nigeria, the Paradigm Initiative LIFE Legacy Programme has expanded to multiple African nations.

Since its inception in Kenya in September 2023, the programme has trained 80 young individuals from Kibera in Nairobi and Tana River in Coastal Kenya, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in the digital age.

The LIFE Legacy Programme, an acronym for Life Skills, ICT Skills, Financial Readiness, and Entrepreneurship Skills, aims to create opportunities for youth to access internships, online work, or entrepreneurial ventures, enabling them to earn immediate and sustainable income.

The programme, which is currently being implemented in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and Zimbabwe has impacted the lives of more than 150,000 young Africans on the continent.

In an effort to tackle dual challenges of youth unemployment and digital exclusion, Paradigm Initiative (PIN) and Sunshine Cinema have sealed a dynamic partnership aimed at bringing about transformative change on the continent.

PIN, a leading non-profit organisation advocating for digital rights and inclusion also works to connect under-served young Africans with digital opportunities, and ensures protection of their rights online.

Sunshine Cinema is a non-profit solar-powered media network working through Southern Africa to address youth unemployment.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Sunshine Cinema will provide innovative mobile solar cinema kits to showcase Paradigm Initiative’s impactful short films.

The kits not only harness the sun’s energy but also empower young entrepreneurs as media facilitators, enabling them to earn income while driving positive social change within their communities.

The collaboration comes at a critical juncture when countries within the continent are grappling with the consequences of digital divide and the urgent need for employment opportunities for the youth. The two organisations aim to bridge these gaps and create a ripple effect of positive change.

Commenting on the collaboration, Nnenna Paul-Ugochukwu, PIN’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), said:

“This collaboration marks an important step in leveraging the power of storytelling to champion digital rights and inclusion on the continent. It is a symbiotic relationship that goes beyond traditional advocacy to lighting up minds and creating opportunities for the youth.”

On her part, Sydelle Willow Smith, Sunshine Cinema Executive Director, said:

“As we embark on this journey, we will be keen on amplifying the message of digital inclusion, youth empowerment and social transformation. Together, we can illuminate the path towards a brighter, more inclusive Africa.”

Paradigm Initiative has produced three short films inspired by the annual Londa report, which spotlights the state of digital rights and inclusion across African countries. ‘Undersight’ follows the journey of Omar, a brilliant computer programmer who creates revolutionary data collation software, which is in high demand.

The short films the organisation has released are Training, Focus and Finding Diana.  Last December 2023, PIN unveiled the trailer of the 4th short film- ‘Undersight.’
