The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the conversion of a government property in San Francisco, USA, into the Nigerian Digital Technology Exchange Programme Hub, also known as the Nigeria Startup House.

This move aligns with the Ministry’s vision of establishing Nigeria as a major player in the global tech sector.

The hub will serve as a platform to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by providing access to international organizations and venture capital firms concentrated in the San Francisco Bay Area, an innovative hub for startup funding.

This strategic location is particularly key considering that a good portion of the $1.3 billion raised by Nigerian tech startups in 2023 came from Bay Area VCs.

Again, the Startup House will enhance the visibility and recognition of Nigeria’s growing startup sector. This increased exposure will make Nigerian startups more attractive to potential investors and collaborators, facilitating a more productive and interconnected tech industry.

Ultimately, the initiative aims to promote Nigeria’s economic interests by stimulating connections and collaborations with international players, driving the country’s growth within the global technology space.

The San Francisco Bay Area, encompassing Silicon Valley, has a combined GDP exceeding $929 billion and houses over 200 of the world’s leading companies by revenue. This proximity to a thriving tech sector makes it a great location for the Nigeria Startup House.

While the Federal Government, represented by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), will retain ownership of the property, a consortium of Nigerian tech companies will manage its operations through non-public funding.

Five Best Cities for Cybersecurity Jobs https://techeconomy.ng/five-best-cities-for-cybersecurity-jobs/ https://techeconomy.ng/five-best-cities-for-cybersecurity-jobs/#comments Thu, 18 Apr 2024 23:02:38 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=129394 With the inclusion of technology in so many aspects of our lives, there is an increased demand for cybersecurity jobs around the world.

But where could you earn the most if you’re looking to go into this lucrative field?

Trevor Cooke, the online privacy expert at EarthWeb, gives insight into which cities offer the most in terms of cybersecurity careers.

1. San Francisco

San Francisco has long been the tech capital of the United States since the inception of Silicon Valley in the early 1970s, so it is no surprise that it holds the number one place for the highest salaries for cybersecurity jobs in the world.

San Francisco has a consistent stream of new cybersecurity recruits with Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley both located in the area. ‘Both schools have exceptional undergraduate cybersecurity programs, ranking 4th and 5th in the nation,’ says Trevor. ‘Many prospective students choose these schools so that they can graduate and immediately enter the tech workforce in the same city.’

When choosing a cybersecurity firm to work for, cybersecurity experts have the cream of the crop at their fingertips in San Francisco. Five out of the ten most valuable public cybersecurity companies in the world are headquartered in the area, so there are lots of job openings at all times as these companies continue to grow.

2. Boston

Boston is the current hub of cybersecurity conferences, hosting more than 15 conferences and summits on the topic. ‘This city brings in top cybersecurity experts from around the world to trade ideas and work together to build a safer world,’ says Trevor.

It is also home to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which currently ranks second in cybersecurity undergraduate degrees, as well as Harvard and Brandeis, other reputable research and technological schools.

The salaries in Boston are lower than in San Francisco, but on average, the city provides around 700 more jobs annually.

3. Dubai

As one of the two cities on this list located in the Middle East, Dubai has been rising in popularity, wealth, and cybersecurity expertise in recent years.

The cybersecurity infrastructure in Dubai is now ranked fifth in the world after their years of efforts to build robust cybersecurity programs, and they want to start sharing it with the rest of the world. ‘Because of how much research is being done into cybersecurity in Dubai, it is a very appealing place for experts in the field,’ says Trevor.

4. Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is on the cusp of cybersecurity greatness with by far the most yearly job openings. Trevor states, ‘Although salaries are the lowest in this city compared to the other four, Washington D.C. is a great place to start a career in cybersecurity and work your way up to a higher salary.’

Apart from the great social aspects of living in Washington D.C., residents live amongst lawmakers and politicians who are making decisions about cybersecurity and cyberthreats every day.

This offers a unique perspective for those working in the industry, as well as the chance to influence those key decisions.

5. Tel Aviv

Israel’s government has invested a lot into creating a cybersecurity hub in Tel Aviv. ‘It was also the first country to offer a PhD in Cybersecurity as an independent discipline,’ notes Trevor,  ‘which brought a lot of prospective students to the region to further their education.’

Israel’s cybersecurity approach can be described as a proactive, comprehensive, and long-term cybersecurity strategy, focused not on potential attackers but on potential threats.

For these reasons, many cybersecurity experts feel it is the best place to be for the future of cybersecurity.

British Airways, Emirates cancel flights to US over 5G concerns https://techeconomy.ng/british-airways-emirates-cancel-flights-to-us-over-5g-concerns/ https://techeconomy.ng/british-airways-emirates-cancel-flights-to-us-over-5g-concerns/#respond Sun, 23 Jan 2022 16:52:59 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=66600 International airlines are cancelling scheduled flights to most cities in the Unites States over fear of 5G network interference on aviation signals around most US cities.

The flight cancellations, according to this report were based on perceived fears that 5G deployment in some cities in the US would cause serious disruption to aviation signals around the airports.

Recall that earlier in the month, Pete Buttigieg, U.S. Transportation Secretary and Steve Dickson, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) asked AT&T and Verizon Communications to delay the planned introduction of new 5G wireless service over aviation safety concerns.

Dubai’s Emirates airline, for instance, announced on Tuesday that it would suspend flights to several destinations in the United States as of January 19, until further notice because of concerns over 5G mobile network deployment.

The move, according to a statement from the airline was, “due to operational concerns associated with the planned deployment of 5G mobile network services in the US.”

The destinations included Boston, Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Newark, Orlando, San Francisco, and Seattle.

Also, on Wednesday, British Airways cancelled a handful of flights from Heathrow to Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.

“Safety is always our priority. We are monitoring the situation in the US closely and will continue to review our schedule in the next few hours,” the airline said in a statement.

It added, “We are disappointed that some of our customers are facing potential disruption and will update them as soon as possible on any changes to their travel plans.’’

The introduction of 5G technology has been halted in some parts of the US but is going ahead elsewhere.

Emirates further said its flights to New York’s JFK, Los Angeles International Airport and Washington DC’s Dulles International Airport would continue to operate as usual.

“We are working closely with aircraft manufacturers and the relevant authorities to alleviate operational concerns, and we hope to resume our US services as soon as possible,” the carrier said.
