Spotify plans to raise its subscription fees in the United States in the first quarter of 2026, the first increase in the country since July 2024, according to the Financial Times.

The Swedish streaming service has already implemented price hikes in more than 150 markets globally, including Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific region.

In August, Spotify raised its premium individual plan from €10.99 to €11.99 in these regions. The upcoming U.S. adjustment aims to bolster revenue and respond to pressure from investors and record labels.

JPMorgan analysts have estimated that even a $1 increase per month could add around $500 million to Spotify’s annual revenue. Record labels argue that streaming fees have lagged behind inflation and remain lower than comparable services such as Netflix, making price hikes necessary for fairer compensation and long-term sustainability.

Spotify’s leadership change adds another aspect to this transition. Founder Daniel Ek recently stepped down as CEO, and the company has appointed two co-CEOs: Gustav Söderström, the current Chief Product and Technology Officer, and Alex Norström, the Chief Business Officer.

The move is seen by analysts as a strategic recalibration, combining product innovation with stronger business growth priorities.

The streaming giant remains the world’s largest music service, with over 600 million monthly active users. Its preeminence, coupled with subscriber loyalty, gives Spotify confidence that the U.S. price rise will be absorbed without significant churn.

Reports also suggest that competitors like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music may follow with similar increases as the market adjusts to higher subscription norms.

Spotify will increase its subscription price again, this time affecting its Premium Individual plan across multiple regions beginning September 2025, Financial Times report.

The monthly fee will move from €10.99 to €11.99 ($14.05), covering South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific.

The change comes less than two years after the company’s last increase. For Spotify, this is part of its goal to expand profitability and drive its initiative towards one billion global users.

The Swedish streaming giant currently counts 696 million monthly active users and 276 million paying subscribers.

Alex Norström, co-president and chief business officer, told the Financial Times: “Price increases and price adjustments and so on, that’s part of our business toolbox and we’ll do it when it makes sense.”

Over the past year, Spotify has tightened operations, cutting costs through layoffs and scaling back on expensive podcast deals. Those decisions, alongside subscription growth, helped the company deliver its first annual profit in 2024 and record a 31.5% gross margin in the second quarter of 2025. Free cash flow now stands at €700 million, a turnaround after years of losses.

Alongside the price rise, Spotify is betting heavily on product innovation. Recent features include AI-powered playlist customisation, a virtual DJ tool, and audiobook integration. These are designed not just to improve listening but also to make users less likely to cancel, even when prices climb.

In Africa, Premium subscriptions will now cost R69.99 per month in South Africa, roughly on par with rivals Apple Music and YouTube Music. Analysts say this alignment in pricing shows Spotify’s intent to defend its market share, especially in mobile-first regions where streaming adoption is still rising quickly.

Spotify already controls about 65% of the global music streaming market and 45% of paid subscriptions outside China and Russia, according to Luminate. Analysts believe the new features and improved personalisation will help absorb the impact of higher costs for subscribers, ensuring Spotify maintains its lead as the dominant global music platform.

Spotify, today announced a price hike for its premium subscription plans in the US, the second increase within a year.

The new pricing will take effect for new subscribers starting June 3, 2024, while existing subscribers will see the change reflected in their July billing cycle.

The Individual plan will increase from $10.99 to $11.99 per month, Duo plan jumps from $14.99 to $16.99 per month, and the Family plan rises from $16.99 to $19.99 per month. The Student plan will remain at $5.99 per month.

Spotify justifies the price increase as a necessary measure to fund continuous investment and innovation in its product features, ensuring an enhanced user experience.

This announcement comes after a similar price hike in July 2023, which affected various regions globally. In the US, the individual ad-free premium plan increased from $9.99 to $10.99 per month, with corresponding adjustments for Duo, Family, and Student plans.

Spotify confirmed that existing subscribers will receive email notifications regarding the upcoming price change within the next month. New subscribers signing up after June 3, 2024, will be subject to the new pricing immediately. Existing users on a free trial will be charged the new $11.99 monthly fee after their trial period ends.

This price hike follows a trend across streaming services. The need to secure licensing rights for music and podcasts, coupled with investments in expanding content libraries and improving user experience, likely influences these adjustments.

Spotify offers a variety of subscription plans targeted at different user preferences. The Premium Individual plan provides ad-free music listening, on-demand playback, and the ability to download music for offline listening. Students can enjoy a discounted Premium Student plan with the same benefits.

For couples living together, the Premium Duo plan offers ad-free music listening, on-demand playback, and offline music downloads for both users. Finally, the Premium Family plan allows up to six users residing in the same household to enjoy the same benefits as Premium Individual.

Those who are not ready to commit to a paid subscription can still utilize Spotify’s free tier, which offers ad-supported music listening with limited controls over song selection.
