If you need an additional source of income, you should look no further than Nigeria’s thriving digital banking industry.

You’ll find the best business opportunity there, with PalmPay being the most rewarding fintech to bank with.

With over 30 million users and 1.1 million businesses, including 600,000 merchants and 500,000 agents as part of its cashless payment ecosystem, PalmPay is a perfect platform for those looking to make money in the digital banking space.

One major reason why PalmPay stands out among other competing brands is that its users can send and receive money seamlessly, pay bills effortlessly, and shop with ease, all while earning discounts and cashback performing these tasks.

In Nigeria’s fintech space, no other brand has these financial offerings, except PalmPay. Data even shows that PalmPay has the highest rating on Google Play store in the fintech space.

This article covers the top six most popular features of the PalmPay app that anyone can use to make money from referrals, betting, cashback and discounts, sales and a distinctive financial offering by PalmPay called the Trial Cash.

1. Refer & Earn

PalmPay’s Refer and Earn feature is a perfect marriage between your contact list and the app’s innovative financial payment offerings. Inviting people you know to register on the PalmPay app and transact can earn you extra good money.

How does it work? When you invite anyone on your contact list using your invite link on the app dashboard, PalmPay pays you for every successful download of the app and transaction that your invites go ahead to make through your referral link.

A fee of N250 is paid to you for every successful referral. You’ll then need to complete five referrals to be eligible to withdraw from your PalmPay wallet for spending from as low as N2,000 and as much as you can earn through successful referrals.

2. Sports Betting

There are several ways to fund your sports betting account, but none comes close to using PalmPay. This UEFA EURO ‘24 season, PalmPay is bringing you an exciting opportunity to win fantastic prizes, including an iPhone 15 Pro and amazing cash rewards in its Bet and Win Big promo in partnership with iLOT, BetWay, BetCorrect, AccessBet and BetKing. Join in the thrill of the tournament while boosting your chances to win big with our special betting deposits campaign.

From June 14th to July 15th, 2024, make your betting deposits and stand a chance to win an iPhone 15 Pro and share in millions of cash prizes.

2. Airtime to Cash

You will agree that converting airtime to cash to earn money is an interesting idea. Do you remember back then when you bought more airtime than you needed and didn’t know what to do with the extra airtime? This feature erases that dilemma.

This feature, the first of its kind by a digital payment platform, enables PalmPay users to convert airtime to cash at ease, following just a few simple steps, after which the money equivalent is credited to their PalmPay wallet for onward spending.

As a PalmPay user, should you ever have extra airtime that you do not intend to use and want cash in exchange, all you have to do is click on the Recharge2Cash icon on the app, select the SIM network, enter the OTP sent to your phone, then select the amount you want to convert to cash and finally click on convert.

3. Cashback & Discounts

PalmPay is big on cashback and discounts. You get rewarded coupons or PalmPoints for almost every transaction on the app, from electricity, airtime and data to cable TV subscriptions. The cashback and discounts are respent on the app.

The cashback and discounts apply for the first five bill payments that you make in a month and range from 15 PalmPoints for your first airtime recharge of N100 to a 2% bonus in PalmPoints when you pay for Cable TV and electricity.

PalmPay offers new users various coupons for them to get cashback and discounts on the bouquet of services available on the app. PalmPay users have the privilege of paying less than the market value for the numerous services on the app.

4. In-app Promotions

Periodically, PalmPay rewards users with various in-app promotions which involve the users undergoing activities. One such is the ongoing 2023 AFCON tournament which PalmPay is partnering with TECNO, StarTimes and Bet9ja.

Users who take part in the PalmPay AFCON Soccer Fiesta stand a chance to share N108 million and win free StarTimes subscriptions, betting coupons and loads of cashback.

Ready to kick off the excitement and make money doing so? Open your PalmPay app now and dive into the AFCON Soccer Fiesta for a chance to win big!

5. Trial Cash

Another first of its kind by any digital payment platform, the Trial Cash is a distinctive reward designed to let you explore the benefits of the app’s flexible savings feature. As with most PalmPay features, this comes with exciting rewards.

The PalmPay Trial Cash is not real money, however, users of the app are rewarded with a spendable daily interest of 16 per cent per annum sent into their wallet, which they can then go ahead and use to perform different transactions on the app.

Users can earn Trial Cash by completing daily tasks on the app such as transferring to a PalmPay wallet or adding money to their wallet from their bank account or agent.

Conclusion

If you plan not only to spend money this 2024 but also make money, there’s no reason why you should use any other digital payment platform for your transactions. PalmPay offers you incentives that no other platform does.

Not using PalmPay for your daily transactions? Go ahead and download the PalmPay app, follow the CBN KYC directive to update the app with your BVN and NIN and continue to perform transactions and make good money.

Today, the Nigerian Television Authority said it would be transmitting all the 52 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 holding between January 13 and February 11 2024 in Ivory Coast.

The Africa’s largest TV network made this known on its X handle, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Afro Sports.

It tweeted, “NTA signs Memorandum of Understanding with Afro Sports for transmission of 52 matches of Africa Cup Of Nations in Cote D’ivoire.”

Earlier, Multichoice, the parent company of DStv, last Wednesday, said the upcoming African Cup of Nations tournament would not be broadcasted on its platform.

It said the satellite failed to secure the broadcasting rights to broadcast the continent’s biggest footballing event on its SuperSport channels.

Meanwhile, StarTimes had also indicated that the station would show live coverage of the AFCON 2023 matches.

Monopoly is a situation whereby there is a single producer, supplier or seller of a particular good or service.

Monopoly can also arise when a producer or supplier offers a product or service which does not have substitutes. It may also arise when a product is not easily available.

Government regulations can also encourage a monopoly when competing players are not allowed into a sector.

For example, the defunct Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) was the sole provider of telecom services in Nigeria until the Federal Government deregulated the sector in 2001, leading to the award of GSM licences to MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and later Etisalat Nigeria (now 9mobile).

Also, the former National Electric Power Authority/Power Holding Company of Nigeria (NEPA/PHCN) was a monopoly until 2005 when the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act enabled private sector participation in some aspects of electricity services – especially generation and distribution.

As a lone player in the market, a monopoly dictates the price or availability of its product or service. For example, MultiChoice Nigeria, the local subsidiary of South Africa’s pay-tv company was a monopoly for more than two decades; it consistently increases the prices of its services despite lawsuits filed by subscribers seeking to curb the trend.

This year alone, it has raised prices three times. According to Statista, MultiChoice, owners of DStv and Gotv, presently controls 10.23 million, while StarTimes owns 7.81 million market shares respectively.

DSTV and GOTV fight against monopoly

Rival StarTimes – a partnership between the private sector and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) – was launched in 2019. Despite this, monopoly still persists in the segment.

Telecom operators provide mobile communication services including voice, data, internet services and other value-adding services that make the transmission or exchange of communication or information between one or more people possible across long distances using modern technology.

Monopoly in the telecom industry can occur when a dominant operator owns multiple spectrums, controls the largest subscribers  and profits.

A monopolistic network operator might grow so big wielding enormous influence and connection within the regulatory and political leadership of a country.

Adeolu Ogunbanjo
Adeolu Ogunbanjo – NATCOMS’ President

Speaking on the implications of allowing a monopoly in Nigeria’s telecom market, Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, the national president, National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), stated that a monopoly can impact quality of telecom service provided as it will depend on the whims and caprice of the dominant operator.

The services may be poor. The industry will be characterised by poor performance and dissatisfaction, low penetration of wireless services and expensive internet, mobile and telephone services.

On the contrary, a competitive and free market ecosystem will lead to high performance and satisfaction, high penetration of wireless services and cheap internet, mobile and telephone services.

Chief Ogunbanjo opposed the recent move by MTN Group to acquire the spectrum of struggling fourth GSM operator, 9mobile, describing it as a potentially-dangerous descent of the nation’s telecom sector into a total monopoly.

“We’ve been back and forth on this and I have had cause to put my mouth on this issue. Again, I will say that MTN is going through the backdoor to acquire that spectrum (9mobile). I’m sorry, but that’s the sad truth and the regulator shouldn’t encourage it at all, they should keep it open,” he stated.

He suggested that it would be better for the board of Emerging Market Telecommunications Services (EMTS) – owners of 9mobile, to recapitalise the business rather than selling the network to MTN, which already controls more than half of the telecom market.

His words:

“With just about 6% of the market share, they (9mobile) are not doing well. For me, I really do not know why they could not recapitalise and why they want another network to acquire them. The other operator (MTN) will now become the dominant service provider. It’s not going to be tidy for the telecoms sector. In my opinion, it should be discouraged. However, even if the merger and acquisition should be done, the regulator should keep it open. Again, you may want to ask, why can’t Glo and Airtel buy it (9mobile)? At least, I think one is 20 something per cent and the other about 30 something per cent of the market share. The regulator should encourage those ones to come to terms with building their network as well.”

The NATCOMS boss further stated that in order to build a more resilient telecom industry with fair competition, other MNOs apart from MTN should be allowed to seek funds to acquire 9mobile should the owners consider it as the most viable business decision.

“There are some funds from multilateral finance organisations. If they (other MNOs) apply, it will be granted, because it’s telecoms and we have the market; we’ve got the subscribers base, we’ve got everything. But for 9mobile, they should at least go to town and recapitalise and then come up again and increase their market shares rather than just having a single-digit market share, which is too low to play and dominate in the Nigerian telecoms sector. Perhaps that might be the driving force for the board members to say, ‘look, we are still single-digit market penetration, so why shouldn’t we just sell out? But, in my honest opinion, I oppose selling out. They should rather recapitalise; they shouldn’t sell out. But if they are going to sell out, it should be thrown open back to the NCC and I expect the NCC to do the needful,’’ Chief Ogunbajo stated.

He further warned that MTN’s acquisition of 9mobile would make the South African telco more powerful.

“They will be too powerful. They will have bigger control of the market and dictate the direction of things in the sector. In their (MTN) early days they had a lot of funds to play with at a very low-interest rate in the 2000/2001 days. They’ve been favoured in a way because the South African Government is ready to assist them as well, plus the fact that multilateral financial organisations are also ready to fund them because of their success stories. But nonetheless, others should not die or go out of extinction because of one particular network operator. They should be encouraged to compete and thrive,’’ he noted.

Chief Ogunbanjo emphasised that, “The moment MTN acquires that (9mobile) with their 43 or 44 per cent market share, which means they will have a minimum of about 50 something per cent and that is half of the Nigerian telecoms market. They’ll have so much power and control over the sector and that means they will be dictating the pace. While I agree it’s a free market, nonetheless we can’t afford to have one dominant force in this space.’’

The NATCOMS President also asserted that allowing a dominant player would be a disincentive to the Federal Government’s efforts at attracting foreign investors into the economy, including the telecom sector.

He stated: “Our President is marketing the country’s economic potential to attract more foreign direct investments; so, it will be wise not to kill the ones available here. We should encourage others to be major players in the sector.

Airtel is there also, they have about 20 whatever per cent; the other one (Glo) is also about 20 something per cent. Encourage these ones as well to be major players in the sector. They shouldn’t allow only one player to overtake the entire industry, which is going to be a disadvantage to the benefits of the other players.

“Aside from that, if you look at Multichoice, they have dominated the pay-tv sector in the country, and they have made three increases this year alone to their subscription rate. We don’t want to see that happen in the telecoms sector.

No! We don’t. They will be dictating the pace because they have the volume and they control more than 50 per cent market share. And that won’t be tidy for the Nigerian telecoms industry.’’

Chief Ogunbanjo advised the industry regulator, Nigeria Communications Commission, to initiate and implement innovations that can strengthen the Nigerian telecom sector, including ensuring fair and level-playing field for all operators.

“As a regulator, they should regulate and ensure that every Mobile Network Operator (MNO) competes pretty well within the space and also ensure the competition is healthy. They should regulate the entire telecoms sector without giving any form of preferential treatment to another at the detriment to the growth and development of others. Let NCC keep its operations open and be fair to all parties concerned by ensuring that they are transparent in whatever spectrum that they want to sell or return or give back to the NCC, so that other MNOs can take advantage of the potential in the market, and if possible, acquire the spectrum.

“For instance, I know that some of them have now started deploying the 5G, though China is already looking at the 6th Generation already, but let’s get ours right first. So, it’s good, let them keep exploring other things, but to acquire another MNO’s spectrum is unacceptable. But, if the likes of Airtel and Glo say, look, we don’t have the money, then it is good and fine for a takeover. But, it has to be through the right channel and not the backdoor,’’ the NATCOMS boss said.

You know them as music executives, producers and talent managers, but you have never seen them as talent mentors?

As Naija Star Search kicks off, Kenny Ogungbe, ID Cabasa and Asha Gangali will square up against themselves in the group stage of the music reality show as coaches. Each coach will have contestants assigned to them, with some game twists unknown.

Thus, aside from the electrifying performances by the contestants, the show is full of drama, intense competition and passion as the twists of the game cause mixed emotions.

In a game flow unveiled by the organisers, the show will be a blend of music performances and a glimpse of their lives off the stage.

In a post seen on Naija Star Search social media handles @naijastarsearch, the game flow consists of the Group Stage Competition with 3 teams led by the 3 Judges; Pair Battle with 12 contestants performing in twos; eight Solo Performances; and the Final 3 who will slug it out for the grand prize of N10,000,000 and more.

In the Group Stage, three teams are formed with five evictions in three episodes. After the weekly performance, the team with the lowest score will go on probation, by audience votes. Then members of the team on probation will nominate their team members for eviction.

The Pair Battle, the next phase, will have the remaining twelve contestants divided into six teams of two each. The judges will decide which four contestants get evicted. Likewise, in the solo performances, which will have five evictions, the judges will decide who goes home. Four contestants will compete in the final episode consisting of three finalists plus one contestant saved by audience votes. The audience will vote using USSD.

Naija Star Search airs every Sunday at 8 pm on ST Nollywood Plus, ST Nollywood and ST Yoruba channels on StarTimes.

Naija Star Search is a reality show aimed at discovering the next generation of Afrobeats superstars.

The judges say, unlike other music reality shows, the Naija Star Search show is unique because the focus is solely on Afrobeats, an umbrella term for all kinds of songs originating in Nigeria.

In a media chat, Mr Ogungbe said that he and his fellow judges would look out for authenticity, potential, originality and street credibility among the talents, adding that the top seven finalists from the show would be groomed by the Kennis Music label and given a platform to turn their raw talents into superstars.

The maiden edition of Nigeria’s first Afrobeats reality show, the Naija Star Search, will commence on September 4 on ST Nollywood channels on StarTimes.

Eighteen contestants have been rigorously selected by the show’s judges led by music label executive Kenny Ogungbe; celebrated music producer ID Cabasa; and singer Asha Gangali. VJ Adams is the host of the show.

The judges would look for authenticity, potential, originality and street credibility among the talents. Naija Star Search will see the contestants showcase their singing prowess while battling for N10 million prize.

Furthermore, the top seven finalists from the show would be groomed by the Kennis Music label and given a platform to turn their raw talents into superstars.

Kenny ‘Keke’ Ogungbe, the head judge of the show, revealed that over 4,000 contestants had sent in their entries for the competition.

The music reality show, which aims at sustaining the Afrobeats culture and nurturing young talent, is an initiative of StarTimes in association with Kennis Music.

Speaking at the unveiling event in Lagos, StarTimes Chief Operations Officer Tunde Aina said, “Naija Star Search is fashioned to be an exclusive Afrobeats show, the first of its kind in the country. Contestants will perform only Naija songs, starting with the classics and contemporaries to warm their vibes (ginger their swagger) and then singing original songs composed by themselves.

“With guidance and criticism from the judges, these talents will be schooled in the art and business of Afrobeats music for the next three months.

“Ultimately, the goal is to discover the next promising talents with the potential to blow. Top performing talents will work with Kennis Music, who will groom, mentor, produce and market their songs to a music-loving audience in Nigeria and Africa.

Comparing Naija Star Search to the future of afrobeats, Kenny Ogungbe said, “Afrobeats will never die.

The people sustaining it now are in their mid-twenties and thirties. To sustain it, we need to groom new talents in their teens so that in the next ten years, we will still have those holding it. We are here for the future to project the beauty of Naija music.

Adding to what Kenny said, ID Cabasa said that “we are here to sustain the momentum that is building in the ecosystem of Afrobeats globally. To do this, we don’t just want to leave it to those that are there now. We don’t want a situation where once our legends die, they die with the history, the music, and the culture of the genre.

“We saw a lot of young talents during the audition process, which blew our minds. Naija Star Search has become a pivot for any ambitious artiste for the limelight. Currently, it is very hard to break through in the music industry.

“To promote an artiste now, you would need millions of naira. This platform was set up to push them even when they didn’t have that push. So, any outstanding talent in this reality show would come out with great potential. We will be training them on songwriting, how to record their songs and how to sustain themselves in the industry since it’s easier to blow than sustain oneself in the industry.”
