The report revealed that the company could reach a final decision as early as the end of April. If approved, Samsung would begin winding down sales of products including televisions, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners in the Chinese market.

While retail sales may end, Samsung is expected to keep its factories in China. Those sites would instead support overseas demand by producing goods for export markets.

The planned exit is influenced by the number of Chinese manufacturers now operating in the local market with lower prices and stronger product quality. Brands such as Haier, Hisense and TCL have also expanded beyond China, increasing competition abroad.

Samsung once held a stronger position in China’s consumer electronics market, but local competitors have steadily reduced its share in recent years.

In a statement, Samsung said it regularly reviews its global business structure in response to changes in operating conditions. The company added that nothing has been decided regarding speculation over possible restructuring in China.

If the withdrawal goes ahead, Samsung would lose direct access to one of the world’s largest appliance markets. However, it would still maintain a manufacturing base in China while focusing sales on regions where its premium products are more competitive.

TV Market: TCL Narrowing the Gap with Market Leader Samsung https://techeconomy.ng/tcl-narrowing-the-gap-with-market-leader-samsung/ https://techeconomy.ng/tcl-narrowing-the-gap-with-market-leader-samsung/#respond Tue, 27 Jan 2026 08:07:55 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=175014 Quick Read:

  • Samsung maintained its top position with a 17% market share, although its shipments declined 3% YoY.
  • TCL continued to expand its presence, shipping 20% more TVs YoY and narrowing the gap with the market leader.
  • Competitive pressure is expected to intensify in 2026 as major brands increase shipments in high-growth segments such as MiniLED and mid-to-large-size screens.

Global TV shipments declined 1% YoY in November 2025, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest Global Monthly TV Tracker, reversing the growth seen in the previous two months.

In MoM terms, the shipments fell 15% in November, as September and October shipments had been boosted by inventory accumulation ahead of year-end peak sales.

Samsung remained the leading global TV brand in November 2025, although its shipments declined 3% YoY, resulting in a modest decrease in market share, from 18% in November 2024 to 17%.

TCL continued to expand its presence in the global TV market, narrowing the gap with market leader Samsung. Despite the continued sluggishness in the Chinese market, TCL’s global TV shipments surged 20% YoY, demonstrating the company’s growing competitiveness.

Associate Director Sujeong Lim said,

“Offering high-definition technologies such as MiniLED at competitive prices, TCL has received great response from emerging markets such as Eastern Europe and the Middle East and Africa (MEA), which are relatively cost-sensitive.”

Another Chinese brand, Hisense, maintained its third place, but its shipments declined 13% YoY.

This manufacturer is heavily reliant on its home market, which accounted for 27% of its total shipments in the first half of 2025, and was hit hard by a 24% YoY decline there.

LG Electronics recorded a 7% YoY increase in shipments, raising its market share from 8% to 9%.

With comparatively lower exposure to China, LG benefited from strong momentum in the North American and Latin American markets, where shipments grew 8% and 29% YoY, respectively.

Thanks to the successful completion of the Vizio acquisition in December 2024, Walmart saw significant YoY growth, quickly moving up to the top five.

With its own brand, ONN, and subsidiary Vizio, the company is now emerging as Samsung’s strongest competitor in North America.

Research Director Bob O’Brien said,

“For the year through November, Samsung’s lead over TCL remained stronger. Samsung’s share of TV shipments through November held steady at 16%, as total shipments decreased by 0.6%.

In 2026, Samsung will remain the global TV market leader, while Chinese brands such as TCL, Hisense and Xiaomi will rapidly expand their presence across various segments. In particular, they are increasing shipments in high-growth segments such as MiniLED and mid-to-large-size screens, increasing competitive pressure.”

CES 2026: Google Adds New Gemini Features to TVs, Turning Screens Into Voice-Driven Home Hubs https://techeconomy.ng/google-gemini-google-tv-ces-2026/ https://techeconomy.ng/google-gemini-google-tv-ces-2026/#respond Mon, 05 Jan 2026 15:02:14 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=173697 Google is expanding Gemini to the living room, and this time the television (TV) is the focus.

At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, the company revealed new Gemini features for Google TV that go beyond content search, aiming to change how people interact with their screens entirely.

Instead of scrolling through menus or adjusting settings mid-show, viewers will soon be able to speak to their TV in plain language.

You can ask for recommendations that suit more than one person, request a recap of a series you missed, or describe a film without knowing its title.

Gemini is built to respond like a conversation, not a command list. If you forget a show’s name but remember the plot or an actor, that’s enough.

Google demonstrated this with everyday questions, including, “What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?” The response is not just text. Gemini uses a visual layout that changes based on the question, mixing words, images, video context and live sports data when needed. The idea is to make the TV screen useful, not cluttered.

The company is starting this rollout with TCL, its launch partner for Gemini on TV. The features will first appear on TCL’s flagship QM9K series before expanding to other Google TV devices in the coming months.

That is important because Google TV and Android TV OS already run on more than 300 million monthly active devices worldwide, including televisions, streaming boxes and projectors. This gives Gemini instant scale once the wider rollout begins.

Entertainment is only part of the plan. Google wants the TV to double as a learning tool. When users ask a question they want to understand, the screen can present a guided overview of the topic.

Concepts are broken down visually, with narration, and follow-up questions can be asked without restarting the search. It feels closer to a lesson than a lookup.

Personal media is also getting attention. Gemini can search through Google Photos on the TV, helping users find specific people or moments. It can apply artistic styles to photos and videos and turn them into cinematic slideshows.

Google believes that people want to relive memories on a larger screen, not just a phone.

One of the most practical changes is how Gemini handles TV settings. If the picture looks wrong or the sound is unclear, there’s no need to pause and hunt through menus.

Saying things like “the screen is too dim” or “I can’t hear the dialogue” prompts Gemini to adjust the right controls instantly, without pulling you out of what you’re watching.

All of this depends on software. The new features require devices running Android TV OS 14 or higher and an active internet connection. OS 14, which began rolling out widely in 2025, brought upgrades such as picture-in-picture, improved energy-saving modes, smoother performance and stronger accessibility and security features.

A Google account is also required, and support will vary by language, country and device at launch.

Strategically, Google is no longer treating the TV as a passive screen. With Gemini, it is positioning the television as an always-on home hub, capable of conversation, learning and control.

In that process, Gemini is also stepping into the role once held by the older Google Assistant, promising more natural dialogue and bigger abilities.

Top TVs for Movie Lovers on a Budget https://techeconomy.ng/top-tvs-for-movie-lovers-on-a-budget/ https://techeconomy.ng/top-tvs-for-movie-lovers-on-a-budget/#respond Fri, 14 Nov 2025 15:29:36 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=171054 For people who love movies, a good television set serves as one of the main mediums to so many cinematic genres.

Whether you are enjoying the latest blockbuster release or revisiting old classics, the quality of your viewing experience depends majorly on display.

A good television can transform your living room into a personal cinema, bringing similar vibrant, crisp details, and an enjoyable sound system directly into your home.

Fortunately, the TVs we have in the modern market has evolved considerably, making high-quality viewing experiences affordable to those with budget constraints.

Gone are the days when an excellent cinematic experience required a lot of financial investment. Today’s budget televisions come with technologies and features that were once exclusive to only premium models, including 4K resolution, High Dynamic Range (HDR), and the various smart connectivity features.

This means people who enjoy watching celebrities can now enjoy films without breaking the bank.

The main point is to understand which features truly improve your movie-watching experience and identify models that give exceptional value without unnecessary spending.

Key Features to Look for in a Budget TV

When selecting a budget TV, there are certain specifications that deserve attention. Understanding these features enables you to make more informed decisions and ensure that your investment gives you quality cinematic experience.

  • Display resolution should be one of the top considerations. While Full HD (1920×1080) provides enough clarity for smaller screens, 4K Ultra HD (3840×2160) has become more affordable and offers more enhanced detail. For movie lovers, this higher resolution renders the intricate cinematography and artistry that filmmakers intend audiences to appreciate. The additional pixels create sharper images, more noticeable during movie scenes with fine textures or larger landscapes.
  • HDR support is another important feature that has so much impact on visual quality. This technology increases the range between the darkest blacks and brightest whites, producing images that are more realistic and with greater depth. Movies shot with HDR in mind show more contrast, making dimly lit scenes more enjoyable while preventing bright areas from appearing washed out. Even budget televisions now come with HDR10, the standard format that enhances most modern content.
  • Sound quality, although often overlooked, also significantly influences the viewing experience of movie lovers. While a dedicated sound system provides superior audio, budget televisions with Dolby Audio or improved speaker configurations give good quality sound without additional investment. Clear dialogue and balanced audio ensure that you catch every whispered conversation and dramatic musicals in movies.
  • The refresh rate determines how smooth motion appears on a television screen. A 60Hz refresh rate is sufficient for most movie content because films are mostly shot at 24 frames per second. Some models use Motion Enhancement (MEMC) technology, which reduces blur during fast-moving scenes. This technology benefits mainly action films and sports content.
  • Smart features have also become standard even in budget models these days, providing direct access to streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and other popular services. This connectivity feature makes sure users no longer need external streaming devices, simplifying their setup while enlarging their content options as well. Operating systems such as Android TV, Google TV, and VIDAA offer intuitive user interfaces and many applications.
  • Screen size also needs careful consideration, but this should be based on your viewing distance and room dimensions. For watching movies, a 43-inch display is very suitable for rooms where viewers sit 1.5 to 2.5 meters from the screen, while those with larger room spaces might prefer models ranging from 50 to 55 inches in size. The guiding principle is to select the largest screen that fits more comfortably within your space and viewing distance.
