Lagos residents can expect some relief soon as repairs on the Third Mainland Bridge nears completion.

Beyond repairs, the Federal Works Minister David Umahi has revealed that the project on Third Mainland Bridge incorporates enhanced security features to combat crime and illegal activities around the bridge.

When you talk about the total rehabilitation of the bridge, you talk about the deck,” Umahi said. “Thankfully, Mr President has released the funds, and I can confidently say that 99% of the project is done.”

While the bridge itself is nearly finished, additional work is underway to improve safety and deter illegal activity. This includes replacing existing generator-powered lights with solar-powered lighting for both the top and underside of the bridge.

We are also putting up CCTV cameras,” Umahi explained. “President Tinubu himself pointed out the issue of people illegally mining sand under the bridge. I’ve seen it myself – they’re even damaging the concrete to anchor their boats.”

The minister spoke in optimism about the project’s impact, not just on traffic flow, but also on the overall security of the bridge.

This news comes after weeks of repair work that caused high traffic congestion for motorists and commuters. The exact reopening date remains unrevealed, but the announcement suggests it’s imminent.

In addition to the bridge repairs, Minister Umahi took the opportunity to point out his strong support for President Tinubu’s administration. He believes President Tinubu’s leadership is divinely ordained and predicts an eight-year term for the current administration.

You must know that the coming onboard of Mr President is divine,” Umahi stated. “When God starts a thing, He completes it.” He went on to praise President Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to “taking back this country and giving it back to Nigerians.”

The Lagos State Government will on Wednesday and Thursday 28 and 29th respectively close the third mainland bridge.

The third mainland bridge closure will affect both bounds of the carriageways from 12-noon on Wednesday, 28th to 12-noon on Thursday, 29th February, 2024.

The closure by the Federal Ministry of Works was announced On Monday, in a statement by Oluwaseun Osiyemi,  the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation.

He said, there will be a total closure of the Third Mainland Bridge for 24 hours to allow the contractor execute a major aspect of the ongoing repair works on the bridge.

The commissioner advised all road users to use alternative routes already provided during this period as the bridge would not be opened to traffic for 24-hours.

Osiyemi assured road users that the traffic management officials would be on ground to manage traffic and minimise inconveniences.

Repair works have been ongoing on the bridge since January with partial closures for in and outbound traffics.

The Federal Government has disclosed plans to close the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele section of the Third Mainland Bridge from 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

Olukorede Kesha, the federal controller of Works in Lagos State, announced this in a statement on Thursday.

Ms Kesha said the closure would be done on the Lagos Island-bound carriageway of the bridge.

She appealed to motorists to obey traffic rules and use alternative routes to prevent hardship as comprehensive repairs continue on the highway.

“The federal government, through the Federal Ministry of Works, wish to inform the motoring public that the emergency repairs of Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will continue with the closure of Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele bound for the effective repairs of the entire section of the bridge.

“Consequent upon the above, motorists are hereby advised to use alternative routes,” she said.

Ms Kesha listed the alternative routes and links to include: Ojota-Ikorodu Road-Funsho Williams Avenue-Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS and Ojota-Ikorodu Road-Jibowu-Yaba-Oyingbo-Iddo-Carter Bridge-CMS.

Also listed was Gbagada-Anthony-Ikorodu Road-Funsho Williams-Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS.

“Motorists are further advised to cooperate with the traffic management officials deployed to manage traffic and ensure hitch-free movements in order to minimise the discomfort during this repair period.

“While thanking the general public for their past cooperation and understanding, more is expected this time around,” she said.

The 11.8 km 3rd Mainland Bridge undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation is the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland.

The bridge starts from Oworonshoki, linked to the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island.

It was constructed in 1990 and was adjudged to be the longest bridge in Africa until 1996, when the October 6 Bridge in Cairo, Egypt, was completed.
