What is Fuelling MultiChoice’s Sudden Foray into the Payment Sector? https://techeconomy.ng/what-is-fuelling-multichoices-sudden-foray-into-the-payment-sector/ https://techeconomy.ng/what-is-fuelling-multichoices-sudden-foray-into-the-payment-sector/#respond Tue, 30 May 2023 06:54:58 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=103175 Many projections indicate that the future of payment in Africa is looking promising, with digital solutions and fintech innovation driving financial inclusion, economic growth, and improved access to financial services for millions of people.

In Nigeria and beyond, payment challenges are indeed a significant issue that needs to be addressed. Despite the progress made in the fintech sector, there are still several hurdles to overcome to achieve widespread access to efficient and inclusive payment systems in the country.

Recently, MultiChoice Group, a leading entertainment and media company in Africa, revealed its collaboration with B2B payment processing platform Rapyd and venture capital firm General Catalyst to introduce an integrated payments platform called “Moment.”

Interestingly, the partnership is seeking to provide businesses across Africa with an efficient and affordable payment infrastructure, enabling them to collect and make payments in a manner preferred by their buyers or suppliers.

The platform also seeks to empower consumers to manage their finances effectively, transforming the African payments landscape and expanding accessibility to digital payments.

Market Response and Shareholder Concerns

A 2019 securities filing report revealed that MultiChoice has 13.9 million subscribers, across Africa. And the Nigerian market controls over 45 percent.

The South African firm stands a big chance of losing many of its subscribers after it announced an upward review of the costs of its DStv and GOtv packages by 17 percent, in text messages sent to subscribers. The 2023 hike is coming barely a year when the prices were reviewed upward by the firm.

Meanwhile, following the announcement, MultiChoice’s stock experienced a decline of nearly 2% by the market’s close, suggesting a lack of confidence from shareholders regarding the company’s ability to establish a significant presence in an already fiercely competitive payments sector.

The skepticism among investors might stem from the challenges faced by Multichoice’s core business, DStv, over recent years, as evidenced by declining subscriptions and average revenue per user (ARPU) figures.

Multichoice’s Strategic Approach and Rationale

Africa still faces various payment-related issues, including limited banking infrastructure, a large unbanked population, and a high reliance on cash transactions. These factors contribute to inefficiencies, delays, and security risks in the payment ecosystem

Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice Group, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Rapyd and General Catalyst, highlighting the need for a reliable and accessible payment platform for millions of consumers and small businesses in Africa.

Mawela emphasized the strategic alignment of this venture with Multichoice’s existing payment processing activities, as the company already handles monthly payments from 22 million households across 50 African countries.

The establishment of Moment aligns with Multichoice’s ecosystem expansion strategy, focusing on investing in scalable services supported by technology.

DStv’s Performance and Showmax’s Potential

MultiChoice’s primary business, DStv, has encountered difficulties in recent years. Between 2015 and 2018, DStv Premium subscriptions declined from 2.35 million to 1.92 million, further decreasing to 1.4 million by the end of 2022. Furthermore, MultiChoice’s latest financial results indicated a 6% decline in Compact and commercial package subscriptions.

The average revenue per user (ARPU) for DStv has been on a downward trajectory, falling from R317 per month in March 2018 to R269 in March 2022 for 90-day active subscribers.

In contrast, Showmax, Multichoice’s alternative streaming service, witnessed a notable increase in subscriber numbers, with a reported growth rate of 68% in the previous year and 50% in the year before that.

However, since Showmax’s financial results are not disclosed separately, it remains challenging to assess its impact on Multichoice’s overall financial performance.

Long-term Goals of Moment

Multichoice envisions Moment as a pan-African payments infrastructure that will serve the 44 million small businesses operating on the continent.

The platform aims to facilitate the transition from cash to digital payments, to convert the 90% of retail transactions that currently occur in cash into digital equivalents.

By doing so, MultiChoice aims to stimulate economic development in Africa and enhance the continent’s investment readiness on a global scale, connecting African payments to the wider world.

Final Notes

MultiChoice Group’s partnership with Rapyd and General Catalyst to launch the integrated payments platform Moment signifies the company’s strategic move to address the demand for accessible and reliable payment solutions for African businesses and consumers.

While Multichoice’s core business, DStv, has faced challenges with declining subscriptions and ARPU figures, Showmax has experienced substantial growth.

MultiChoice aims to leverage its existing payment processing capabilities and expand its ecosystem through Moment, aiming to transform the African payments landscape and

Nigeria has 740 Operational Broadcast Stations, Newly Approved 67, says NBC https://techeconomy.ng/nigeria-has-740-operational-broadcast-stations-newly-approved-67-says-nbc/ https://techeconomy.ng/nigeria-has-740-operational-broadcast-stations-newly-approved-67-says-nbc/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2023 08:14:36 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=95523 The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) said it has approved the establishment of 67 new radio and television stations – Nigeria currently has currently 740 operational broadcast stations.

Balarabe Ilelah, Director General, NBC, revealed this while briefing journalists Thursday in Abuja, and also reeled out the NBC Scorecard.

However, he stated that the Commission has fined 17 broadcast stations since the start of the 2023 presidential campaign in September.

According to him, the Commission has also sanctioned 302 for various infringements of the broadcast code.

In total, NBC issued 196 warnings, 69 cautions, and 13 inquiries, and referred nine stations to its national headquarters.

Ilelah stated that the current administration has issued licenses to 473 stations and that President Buhari has approved NBC’s independence from political interference in the exercise of its regulatory functions, particularly the issuance and withdrawal of broadcasting licenses.

He stated that, unlike in the past, this has greatly aided in the reduction of violations by broadcasters.

Ilelah, on the other hand, urged broadcasters to continue cooperating with the Commission in adhering to the provisions governing broadcast operations in Nigeria.

On Digital Switchover (DSO), he stated that despite inherent implementation challenges, President Buhari has continued to support the digital switchover.

“The Commission is currently working on delivering Nigeria to the life-changing experience of digital broadcasting using SIMULCRYPT,” he said.

“Against this backdrop, ITS and NTA-Star Nigeria have signed an agreement to implement this as soon as possible.” The Commission’s Board of Directors has approved licensing the third signal distributor to restructure DSO. This is in addition to the already existing ITS and Pinnacle.”

He stated that the Commission is working to digitize the broadcast license application process so that potential applicants can apply from the comfort of their own homes.

He also stated that President Buhari has authorized the Commission to acquire cutting-edge Nationwide Broadcast Monitoring Equipment.

“Acquisition of the equipment is in the process and if finally acquired the Commission will get to have Ultra Modern Artificial Intelligence-driven Central Monitoring infrastructure,” he said.

He added that the Buhari administration has approved NBC’s request to recruit more staff that will monitor broadcast stations in every nook and cranny.

He said the Commission’s drive to further professionalize the broadcasting industry has motivated it to establish the Nigeria Broadcast Institute for the training of industry players.

“I will use this opportunity to call on broadcasters to continue to abide by the NBC Act, the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, the Electoral Act, and any extant law that guides media operation as we count down to the general elections.

“The Commission has deployed all the technical and operational facilities for the monitoring of the elections.” “To ensure quality broadcast during elections, no locality in Nigeria where a broadcast station exists will be left unmonitored during the elections,” the DG added.

Afreximbank, Silverbird Sign $100m Agreement to Construct Film Studio in Lagos https://techeconomy.ng/afreximbank-silverbird-sign-100m-agreement-to-construct-a-film-studio-in-lagos/ https://techeconomy.ng/afreximbank-silverbird-sign-100m-agreement-to-construct-a-film-studio-in-lagos/#respond Fri, 04 Nov 2022 18:25:14 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=88144 A collaboration deal between the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and Silverbird Group has been struck in order to build a “world-class” film studio complex in Lagos, Nigeria.

Ben Murray-Bruce, the founder of Silverbird Group, and Helen Brume, Head, Project and Asset-based Finance at Afreximbank, inked the deal on Thursday outside of the Africa Investment Forum (AIF) in Côte d’Ivoire.

The agreement, which includes both debt and equity investment, is valued at $100 million.

The Ben Murray-Bruce Studios and Film Academy will be the name of the facility, according to a joint announcement from Afreximbank and Silverbird (BMB Studios and Film Academy).

The project would convert a 32,725 square meter plot of land in Eko Atlantic City into two purpose-built sound stages, a digital hub with music and broadcast studios, editing bays, screening rooms, a studio backlot, production offices, and a film academy created to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s content creators, the statement claims.

“The project seeks to accelerate Africa’s lucrative film and television industries, attract large-scale international productions to Africa, and establish a creativity cluster which will draw in companies and talents working in similar and related sectors,” the statement reads.

“The project will also increase local employment, stimulate business growth, and equip African talents with world-class technical skills and experience in film and television production through the establishment of a film academy.”

The development of the BMB Studios and Film Academy is said to be in line with Afreximbank’s creative Africa nexus (CANEX) initiative, a program established by the bank to support Africa’s creative and cultural industry.

In hIS remarks on the collaboration, Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President of the Intra African Trade Bank, said that the partnership was crucial not only for the substantial support it offers to Africa’s developing film industry but also “because of the studio’s multipurpose potential to serve a range of sectors in the creative industries, from music and film to gaming and virtual reality.”

“At Afreximbank, we recognize the power of Africa’s youth and creative talents to catalyze Africa’s trade, create millions of jobs and promote the emergence of national and regional value chains. This industry is bankable, and we aim to support its growth, expansion, and sustainability. Afreximbank is proud to support this project,” Awani added.

On his part, Murray-Bruce said the BMB Studios and Film Academy is a response to Africa’s need for world-class technical skills and facilities that will accelerate the growth of its creative industries sector.

“From Netflix to Madison Square Gardens in New York, audiences are reveling in the magic of African storytelling,” he said.

“Now more than ever does the African continent need the world-class technical skills and facilities that will propel our creative industries to the next level.

“The BMB Studios and Film Academy is a response to this need and one that I believe will be a catalyst to driving agility, expertise and innovation in the African film and television industries.”

NRG Report Explores Culture, Content Technology Driving Emerging Markets https://techeconomy.ng/nrg-report-explores-culture-content-technology-driving-emerging-markets/ https://techeconomy.ng/nrg-report-explores-culture-content-technology-driving-emerging-markets/#respond Thu, 20 Oct 2022 06:54:18 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=86781 National Research Group (NRG), a global insights leader at the intersection of technology, content, and culture, launched its “Capstone Series,” a first-of-its-kind exploration into the culture, content, and technology driving leading-edge global growth markets.

NRG is part of Stagwell, the challenger network built to transform marketing. In partnership with SBI Media, a Lagos, Nigeria-based media agency and part of Stagwell’s Global Affiliate Network, NRG kicked off the series with “Exploring Nigeria,” a future-leaning view into the technology, culture, and entertainment trends shaping the Nigerian landscape.

“Our Capstone Series is a research undertaking combining a global viewpoint with on-the-ground perspective and expertise at a level of depth we’ve not seen before in emerging markets,” said NRG Chief Strategy Officer Chris Rethore.

“The proof of that is in our inaugural study, which has given us a nuanced, layered understanding of Nigeria’s shifting cultural landscape – showing us what makes Nigerians tick, how their identity impacts their consumption behaviors, and what can be done to better serve these passionate consumers.

We hope that media, entertainment, and tech companies find value and actionable intelligence in this and future studies to help shape decision-making in vanguard markets over the next few years.”

“This study would not have been possible without the partnerships we have built through Stagwell’s Global Affiliate Network, now numbering nearly 80 partners across APAC, EMEA, LATAM, and North America,” said Stagwell Chief Strategy Officer Anas Ghazi.

“Partners like SBI Media accelerate our global research, survey, and insights capabilities at Stagwell, adding an authentic understanding of local markets around the world.”

“We are delighted to collaborate with the innovative team at NRG on this landmark project — the first of its kind in the Nigerian and sub-Saharan African market,” said SBI Media Group CEO Rotimi Bankole.

“We are convinced that the findings in the NRG Capstone Series will provide brands, artists, creatives, and the larger stakeholders in the entertainment and content industry uncharted insights to decipher, discover and leverage engagement opportunities in the market.”

Exploring Nigeria

Anchored by a robust survey of 5,000 in-market consumers with added expert viewpoints of academics, industry insiders, and in-person consumer interviews, “Exploring Nigeria” provides a broad understanding of the cultural pillars that drive the country and its people.

The research dives into 10 key topic areas exploring consumer habits and attitudes in Nigeria today, including the criticality of mobile, the rollout of 5G, the creator economy, content consumption, streaming services, audio and gaming as growth verticals, the power of social media, the future of money, and more.

Key takeaways include:

Mobile is the gateway to connectivity. Mobility is table stakes when it comes to streaming, with 78% noting it’s very important that streaming services work well on mobile. Over half (55%) of all movie and TV consumption is on smartphones, while viewership on laptops, smart TVs, tablets, and desktop devices is less frequent. Smartphones are also the overwhelming method for gaming (83%).

5G will “transform my country for the better,” say 81% of Nigerian consumers. With internet connection quality viewed as the biggest tech problem in the market, nearly 70% are aware of the pending 5G rollout, with the primary benefit seen to be enhanced speed (74%).

YouTube leads as the top streaming service with 82% of respondents using it weekly, and 40% of those who use it multiple times per day. On a daily basis, 64% use it the most often over other services such as Netflix (46%), Prime Video (25%), and AREWA24 (44%), the Hausa-language channel. Of the top five daily activities in general, 66% said they watch a short-form online video.

Nigerians want Nigerian content to positively reflect their culture and values. Of the top five features that make film or TV feel most authentic, 60% indicated the characters should demonstrate Nigerian values (e.g., family/community work ethic, integrity) and should portray a positive image of Nigeria to the outside world (52%).

…But Hollywood is still the dominant entertainment source. U.S. content owns the largest share of film viewing (75% of Nigerian consumers have watched Hollywood films in the past 6 months), while American TV is a close second behind Nigerian-produced TV (61% vs. 68%).

English-language content from other non-US markets also has appeal. Where other countries have flourished with local content, streamers can heavily feature English-dominant titles from their global catalogs – 80% say they most enjoy watching content in English.

The audio is ready for a shake-up. Due to limited internet connectivity, music streaming has yet to really take off in Nigeria – only 49% stream music through a streaming service. Nigerian consumers are more likely to depend on downloading and back-packing content.

Big Tech = big influence. Tech companies including social media companies have a “great deal” of impact on Nigerian culture (64%), second only to religious institutions (73%).

Finance-related technology that can directly benefit Nigerians fuels their desire to succeed professionally, to learn and grow, and to make money. More than half of respondents indicated they are aware and knowledgeable about cryptocurrency (90%), mobile wallets (85%), artificial intelligence (78%), 5G (76%), blockchain (71%), virtual reality (65%), and NFTs (59%).

NRG’s planned upcoming Capstone Series reports include Indonesia (Q4 2022), Argentina (Q1 2023), and Turkey (Q2 2023).

LG Smart TV: Enjoy Great Features And Stunning Design   https://techeconomy.ng/lg-smart-tv-enjoy-great-features-and-stunning-design/ Tue, 27 Sep 2022 12:26:05 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=84759 When deciding on a new TV, price and screen size are likely to shape any shortlist you come up with.

Nevertheless, within that seemingly simple filtering process are a whole raft of things to consider, such as panel display technology (how do UHD, QNEDMiniLED and OLED compare?), as well as smart platform, design and more.

4K Ultra HD resolution and HDR (High Dynamic Range) compatibility is now largely standard – unless you buy a bargain-bin TV special. While 4K is a logical step up from Full HD, HDR comes in various flavours.

In addition to standard HDR10, there is HLG, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and some other variations, like LG’s HDR Pro and Dolby Vision IQ.

Every aspect can represent a rabbit hole, but ultimately it is just a question of deciding which suits you best. Like key competitors, LG offers a huge variety of TV types, covering the budget, mid-range and premium ends of the market.

Not only is LG’s TV range class leading, it also has one of the most widely respected smart TV platforms on the market, in the shape of webOS.

The latest iteration, dubbed webOS22 (the brand has moved from sequential numbering to yearly suffixes), delivers a huge variety of built-in streaming service apps, including Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Now (subscriptions may be required).

There is also voice compatibility with Google Assistant, as well as the brand’s own ThinQ AI platform.

In this guide, we will steer you through the various 2022 models available from LG, where prices vary throwing a focus on their key features and attributes.

We will review category models – UHD, QNEDMiniLED TV and OLED TV with various sizes.

LG UHD – 43”- 86” (4K Ultra HD)

LG’s UQ range is a gateway to the finer things in life, like 4K UHD and multi-format HDR. These sets combine a solid picture performance with a range of highly desirable smart features. Screen sizes range from 43’’ for the UQ 7-series, up to a wall-filling 86-inch on the UQ 8- and 9-series.

The range-topping UQ91 is fashionably slim, thanks to LED edge lighting, and has a furniture friendly crescent stand.

There are only three HDMIs on board though, which could limit your source options. Handling sound and vision is the brand’s Alpha 5 Gen 5 processor, with ThinQ AI.

This silicon is particularly adept at upscaling. Smart Voice Control is available via Google Assistant. The screens are also compatible with Apple AirPlay.

The UQ range runs the latest iteration of webOS, which in addition to having a wide range of streaming apps on tap, also allow family members to set up different user profiles.

HDR options here include LG’s own HDR Pro, which is a dynamic tone mapping technology for static HDR sources. The set also has Filmmaker mode, for movie fans who would rather turn off extraneous processing. Both of these continue up the range.

Gamers are catered for too. There is LG’s game dashboard and optimizer, plus HGiG HDR support. There is no High Frame Rate support for 4K 120fps though. These TVs use a standard 60Hz panel.

Other UHD Models include the UP and UN Series Models to choose from include 43UQ70006LB – 70UQ80006LD; 43UP7550PVG – 82UP8050PVB; 65UN7100PVA – 86UN8080PVA

See link for more details https://www.lg.com/africa/uhd-4k-tvs

LG QNED MiniLED TV – 75” & 86” (4K)

QNED represents a significant step up in display technology from vanilla flavoured LED and NanoCell. What we are looking at here is MiniLED, a backlighting system that uses a plethora of mini LED lights to illuminate the LCD panel, coupled with a Quantum Dot NanoCell filter.

This combination of tech ensures superior levels of brightness and greater precision when it comes to light control, so HDR handling is more precise, black levels are deeper and images have huge dynamic pop. LG uses QNED for both 4k and 8k screens.

You will find upwards of 30,000 LED bulbs on the brand’s largest QNED sets, with 2,500 dimming zones, so when it comes to performance, QNED has a clear advantage over edge-lit LED and full array local dimming rivals.

The QNED range comprises the 4K QNED80, QNED85, and QNED90. HDR support adds Dolby Vision IQ, which is able to compensate for changes in ambient lighting conditions in your viewing room.

The models also have four HDMI inputs with support for High Frame Rate 4k 120Hz gameplay. This, coupled with support for VRR and no screen burn fears make them a very attractive screen range for gamers.

Models to choose from are; 75QNED90VPA and 86QNED91VPA. See link for more details https://www.lg.com/africa/qned-tvs

LG OLED – 55”– 83” – 4K & 8K

With self-lit pixels and no need for a backlight, OLED screens are widely regarded as the best option when it comes to watching movies at home. They are capable of perfect deep black, vibrant colours and brilliant dynamics. Images are cinematic.

LG offers a variety of OLED screens for 2022, from the entry-level A1, through the C1, G1 and Z1 models. Screens sizes range from 48 up to 83”. Picture quality is sensational.

LG’s AI Picture Pro technology incorporates upgraded upscaling, and enhanced dynamic tone mapping, able to more accurately analyse a picture in real time and apply appropriate processing.

The smart platform is webOS 22 (no surprise), so there is plenty of streaming content and catch-up options, plus smart home interaction, including voice support from Google.

Models to choose from OLED55A, OLED 65A1, 48C1, 55C1, 65C1, see link for more details https://www.lg.com/africa/oled-tvs

Useful Tips on How to Choose a TV https://techeconomy.ng/useful-tips-on-how-to-choose-a-tv/ https://techeconomy.ng/useful-tips-on-how-to-choose-a-tv/#respond Fri, 19 Aug 2022 09:22:14 +0000 https://techeconomy.ng/?p=81364 Choosing a TV that will definitely not disappoint and will delight for many years is not such an easy task. Each model, regardless of the manufacturer, can have a fairly voluminous list of characteristics with many names unknown to an average user.

When buying a fairly expensive TV, it is worth choosing very responsibly, especially if you are picky about image quality. A number of simple tips will allow you to correctly assess the importance of certain parameters.

Choose Your Size Wisely

Having determined the maximum amount that you are willing to spend, select the size of the TV screen. This is not necessarily one exact value, there may be several close options, each of which will suit you.

If necessary, you can simply measure with a tape measure the space where the TV will stand, and already under it, together with a consultant in the store, determine the diagonal you need in inches.

Decide on the Type of Accommodation

When choosing a diagonal, you need to know exactly where the TV will be placed. If this is a cabinet or some kind of table, then it is important to evaluate the legs, their stability and dimensions for the selected TV.

If the TV becomes part of a furniture wall, evaluate in advance the proximity of the future TV to the sockets and, if necessary, the method of laying the extension cord.

Choose the Optimal Resolution

The optimal resolution of the TV depends on its diagonal. Those who want to have all the best and most modern, of course, can choose the highest – this is 3840 x 2160 pixels.

Perhaps you want to connect your laptop with the USB port and play 22Bet games for maximum enjoyment. However, if the screen is relatively small, then Full HD will be enough for you – this is 1920 x 1080 pixels. It is generally accepted that a 4K picture makes sense only on TVs with a diagonal of 49 inches or more, although even 40-inch 4K models can be found on sale.

The minimum resolution of modern TVs is 1366 x 768 pixels. In the case of very small TVs, it may be quite enough so that the picture does not crumble into individual pixels. However, remember that models with matrices of 1920 x 1080 pixels may cost a little more, while their picture clarity will be much higher.

Even if you go for the most affordable TV, it makes sense to find out how much the cheapest Full HD option costs.

Check for Correct Connectors

Be sure to check the number and ease of placement of USB and HDMI ports. You will need them to connect flash drives, laptops, camcorders and other equipment.

Useful Tips on How to Choose a TV
TV connectors (Photo: frontlyn)

The convenience of placing such connectors will be especially important if the TV is mounted on the wall. Not all manufacturers make sure that ports are easily accessible.

Pay Attention to the Type of Backlight

In modern TVs, the two most common types of matrix backlight are Direct LED and Edge LED. The first implies a uniform arrangement of LEDs over the entire area of the matrix.

This scheme allows you to apply local dimming and achieve better contrast, but at the same time, TVs with Direct LED are slightly thicker, and power consumption is higher.

Edge LED backlighting is more economical in terms of energy since the diodes in it are placed on the sides of the screen, that is, there are fewer of them.

The light from them is scattered over the entire area of the matrix due to a special reflective surface.

Don’t Believe the Demo Video

Assessing the quality of the backlight and colour reproduction in general, you should not rely on demos that are cyclically spinning on display TVs.

This video may strike with bright colours and contrast, but you should understand that this is the so-called selling content, or simply part of an advertising campaign. By turning on simple TV channels, you may not see such an image, especially for 4K panels.

Get to Know the Interface

When choosing a TV in a store, you may well ask to turn on its main menu in order to appreciate the convenience and ease of setup.

This is especially true in the case of Smart TV. Smart TVs from different manufacturers can vary quite a lot. All of them can provide access to the same services, but additional options sometimes vary greatly. You can study the main features of such operating systems for TV on the official websites of TV manufacturers.

Remote Control

Not all remotes offer a standard set of buttons. In many Smart TVs, remote controls with an extremely limited set of keys are increasingly common. Often, many of the usual actions have to be performed using a gyroscope, that is, the remote control acts as a remote mouse, the position of which is read from a distance.

Useful Tips on How to Choose a TV
TV Remote controls

There is another side of the coin – remotes with a full mechanical keyboard on the back. They will be much more convenient when typing in the built-in browser.

Remotes with a microphone for voice commands can be used for the same purposes. These options should be checked prior to purchase.
