Wikipedia has formally brought some of the world’s largest technology firms into its financial ecosystem, changing how the non-profit funds its operations.

Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Perplexity, and Mistral AI have all joined Google in paying the Wikimedia Foundation for structured access to its projects, including the online encyclopedia’s 65 million articles.

These agreements are part of Wikimedia Enterprise, a paid API launched in 2021 that provides high-quality, reliable data tailored for large-scale use by companies.

The initiative allows tech firms to tap Wikipedia’s content without overwhelming its servers, a problem that had been growing as companies relied more on freely available articles for AI model training.

Wikipedia is a critical component of these tech companies’ work that they need to figure out how to support financially,” Lane Becker, president of Wikimedia Enterprise, told Reuters.

It took us a little while to understand the right set of features and functionality to offer if we’re going to move these companies from our free platform to a commercial platform … but all our Big Tech partners really see the need for them to commit to sustaining Wikipedia’s work.”

The timing of the announcement coincides with Wikipedia’s 25th anniversary, highlighting how far the volunteer-driven platform has come since its launch.

What began as a community-powered encyclopedia is now a vital resource for the global tech industry, underpinning much of the data used in AI development.

Microsoft’s Tim Frank, corporate vice president, noted the importance of the development: “Access to high‑quality, trustworthy information is at the heart of how we think about the future of AI at Microsoft … (With Wikimedia), we’re helping create a sustainable content ecosystem for the AI internet, where contributors are valued.”

Traditionally funded by small public donations, Wikipedia has faced increased server costs due to large-scale content use by AI developers.

The Enterprise programme addresses this by providing structured, paid access, creating a sustainable revenue model without undermining the free encyclopedia that millions rely on.

Adding to this era of change, Bernadette Meehan, former U.S. Ambassador to Chile, took over as Wikimedia Foundation CEO on January 20, 2026.

Her appointment is a professionalisation of leadership as the organisation balances public service with commercial partnerships.

The new agreements formalise Wikipedia’s function in the data supply chain for tech giants while protecting the volunteer work that underpins the platform.

Chao Tayiana Maina is an African historian and Dan David Prize winner who is uncovering buried and overlooked segments of Kenya’s history under the colonial era.

The article, “How a Headstrong Historian is Rewriting Kenya’s Colonial History,” by Kenyan journalist Carlos Mureithi, highlights Chao’s work in unearthing this hidden and suppressed history, using technology to help make this information accessible to a wider audience.

Published in the Christian Science Monitor in January 2023, this article about Chao was recently recognised in first place in the Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards, a new initiative from the Wikimedia Foundation, the global non profit that hosts Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

The awards aim to recognize the essential role journalists play in creating well-researched articles that volunteer editors can use as source materials to develop content on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

Their work helps to grow the knowledge base on one of the world’s most visited websites, so that it is more reflective of the topics, events and people that influence the understanding of culture and history through the ages.

In conversation about the article at a recent event, Carlos Mureithi told us that through this story, he had hoped to highlight the importance of filling historical knowledge gaps, to help promote an awareness and understanding of the country’s past.

He also recognised the importance of amplifying the voices of African changemakers such as Chao on the global stage, who are opening up knowledge through pioneering projects.

Africans and topics about Africa remain obscure on Wikipedia. This is due to the unavailability of credible, well researched, and reliable sources that can help editors to create Wikipedia articles.

Chao, the historian who features in Mureithi’s article, is also one of many Africans who remain undocumented on platforms such as Wikipedia. Not enough has been written about them in the public domain to warrant an article, as part of the site’s policy on notability  criteria.

WikiProject Africa, an initiative that tracks all knowledge linked to the African continent on Wikipedia, shows that only 1.5% of articles on the English version of the online encyclopedia are about Africa.

A deeper look also shows that only 504 of all articles about Africa have been classified as good, meaning they meet the site’s core editorial standards, are well written with a neutral point of view, contain factually accurate and verifiable information, are broad in coverage and illustrated with relevant images.

Media coverage that showcases diverse perspectives is vital in helping to ensure a full and representative view of Africa’s culture and history.

Africa is a mosaic of diverse countries, each with its own unique culture, history, and challenges.

Every corner of Africa has a story to tell; from the bustling markets of Lagos to the serene landscapes of Rwanda. However, this rich tapestry of cultures, languages and traditions remains hidden from view. In the media, a wealth of positive news and developments about the continent often go unwritten.

Stories about economic growth and technological advancement for example, seldom make it into the headlines.

At this year’s Journalism Awards, Nigerian journalist, Osaruonamen Ibizugbe told us:

I firmly believe that the media is responsible for telling and amplifying African tales to influence narratives through its agenda-setting role. As a result, it is critical for journalists to ensure a more inclusive and balanced portrayal of varied voices and experiences in their media reporting, encouraging greater understanding and societal change in the process. Who will tell our African stories if we don’t?”

Journalists hold the key to unlocking a more diverse and inclusive narrative of Africa. We call on them to help promote diversity, equity and inclusion in their reporting to help us present a richer, and more accurate narrative of Africa in the global knowledge landscape.

The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit that operates Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, has launched the inaugural Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards.

Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, this year’s awards celebrate the contributions of journalists in Africa who prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion in their reporting.

The launch was held on May 3rd, 2023, also the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day.

The award upholds the core values of World Press Freedom Day, which highlights the importance of a free press as essential to amplifying diverse voices and experiences. It also aligns with one of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 goals, which seeks to increase local content in all print and electronic media to 60 percent.

The awards aims to recognise journalists who create well-researched articles that volunteer editors use as source materials to develop content on Wikipedia, closing the 85% content gap about Africa on the platform.

According to Anusha Alikhan, Wikimedia Foundation vice president of communications, “Journalists play a vital role in increasing equity on Wikipedia, ensuring that the world’s knowledge is not limited to the perspectives and experiences of a select few. Through Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards we want to celebrate these efforts, shining a light on reporting that helps to close knowledge gaps and uncovers more of Africa’s rich history and culture,”

The Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards nominations will be opened to African journalists whose stories help to expand knowledge about Africa, from May 3rd to June 30th, 2023 using the link here.

African journalists living on the continent are invited to submit their articles under the following categories: Arts, Culture, Heritage, and Sports; Health, Climate Change, and Environment; Women and Youth; Digital and Human Rights.

Articles must have been published online and in English between January 1st, 2022 and June 23rd, 2023.

Award recipients will be announced by the Wikimedia Foundation at the Africa Regional Community Conference, WikiIndaba, in November 2023.

The first-place award recipient will receive USD 2,000, as well as an opportunity to attend WikiIndaba 2023 in Morocco, where they can share more about their work, and accept a trophy, and certificate of recognition.

The second-place award recipient will receive USD 1,500 and a certificate of recognition.

In addition, the Wikimedia foundation will celebrate four other outstanding nominees who will receive special mentions for their work on their website and social media channels.
