Two Telcos Account for 85% of Nigeria’s Subscriber Base in Q1 2026

Nigeria’s telecommunications market is showing clear signs of deepening concentration, as the latest data from the Nigerian Communications Commission and Q1 2026 earnings reports reveal that two dominant operators now control over 85% of the country’s total subscriber base.

This growing dominance underscores the widening gap between market leaders and smaller players, raising important questions about competition, pricing power, and the long-term structure of Africa’s largest telecom market.

As of the end of the first quarter of 2026, the market share distribution among the major mobile network operators is as follows:

Key Market Dynamics & Trends

Dominant Duopoly: MTN and Airtel continue to expand their lead, jointly accounting for approximately 85.87% of the market.

MTN alone with 95,759,210 subscribers based on March statistics maintaining a commanding position with more than half of the total active subscriptions in the country.

The telco is followed by Airtel (63,629,101 subscribers), Globacom (22,639,893 subscribers), while T2 comes at the distant fourth with 3,478,544.

Total Subscriber Growth: The industry reached a total of 182.2 million active subscriptions as of early 2026 a significant increase from 169.3 million in January 2025. The industry crossed 185.7 million subscribers in March 2026.

Technology Shift

Network usage shows a rapid transition toward high-speed connectivity. 4G is the dominant technology with a 53.41% share, while 5G adoption has grown to 3.94%. Conversely, older 2G and 3G technologies continue to decline in relevance.

Revenue Performance: Despite macroeconomic challenges, operators reported robust financial health.

MTN Nigeria, for instance, delivered service revenue of ₦1.5 trillion for Q1 2026, marking a 41.8% year-on-year increase.

Teledensity Improvement

The national teledensity rose to 84.06% by January 2026, up from 78.10% the previous year, indicating deeper penetration of telecom services across Nigeria. The number increased to 85.67% in March.
