New iPhone, Old Android: Why Is Switching Still So Hard?

May 12, 2025

Once upon a keynote, Apple wore a turtleneck and whispered โ€œinnovationโ€ while pointing at a recycled square. Samsung, not to be overtaken, rolled in like a K-drama protagonist, always ready to flex specs.

And here we are again, caught in the annual ritual where smartphones drop harder than oil prices, and consumers must choose between two very different kinds of obsession, iPhone 16 Pro Max and Samsung S25 Edge.

If phones were human beings, the iPhone 16 Pro Max would be a well-dressed executive who insists on doing everything himself, efficient, polished, slightly uptight; the Galaxy S25 Edge would be the fashion-forward genius who can host a dinner party while live-translating Shakespeare into code.ย

Both command attention. Both are brilliant. But they speak very different languages.

Hereโ€™s my take after combing through both devices.

Design and Build: Slim vs Serious

Letโ€™s start with what youโ€™ll feel in your hand. The S25 Edge is slim, just 5.8mm thin and 163g light. Itโ€™s basically the Kate Moss of smartphones, all titanium bones, curves, and Gorilla Glass Ceramic.ย

Samsung stripped it down without stripping away power, and that alone deserves credit. Itโ€™s a fine, strong, and truly pocket-friendly phone.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max, on the other hand, is built at 6.9 inches with a new titanium frame, itโ€™s Appleโ€™s most refined industrial design ever, sleek but weighty. Itโ€™s not trying to be slim, but iconic. And in typical Apple fashion, it is mostly excellent.

Verdict: The S25 Edge is the better looker if you’re after elegance; the iPhone is a fortress with flair.

Display and Visual: Quality vs Quantity

Samsung gives you a 6.7-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen. Itโ€™s rich, sharp, and adaptive with 120Hz refresh rate. Add in mDNIe visual enhancement, and youโ€™re staring at a device with a highly captivating display that fully draws you in.

And Appleโ€™s? The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion tech and always-on functionality. Bigger, vivid, and paired with the thinnest borders ever on an iPhone.

My pick: Samsung wins on pure eye comfort and smart display scaling. But if youโ€™re a fan of cinematic colours and smoother animations, Apple has a slight edge with its A18 Pro chip driving visuals like a film editor on espresso.

Performance: Brains Behind the Beauty

Appleโ€™s A18 Pro chip is no joke. Built on second-gen 3nm tech, it tears through tasksโ€”4K 120fps video, real-time transcriptions, even gaming at console levels. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is a performance giant, plain and simple.

Samsungโ€™s Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy isnโ€™t far behind. It handles gaming, editing, and AI processing smoothly, especially with its custom vapour cooling system. If you multitask hard, maybe Zoom, video editing, and AI sketching all at once, it holds steady.

Reality check: Both will do everything you throw at them. But Appleโ€™s chip, paired with iOS 18 and native hardware-software harmony, makes the experience feel more seamless, more instant.

Cameras: Detail vs Drama

Samsung built a 200MP wide camera into a frame slimmer than most wallets. Add a 12MP ultra-wide and a 12MP selfie cam, and youโ€™ve got a photography giant house. Low light? Sorted. Macro? Effortless. Video tools like Audio Eraser and Drawing Assist are genuinely useful for creators.

Appleโ€™s camera system is… surgical. The 48MP Fusion camera might sound unassuming by comparison, but quality trumps quantity here. Paired with a 5x telephoto lens and advanced image signal processing, the results are cinematic. Add real-time editing, Photographic Styles, and spatial video, and itโ€™s like holding a film studio.

Truth: Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge gives you firepower, Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max gives you finesse. Pick your battle.

Intelligence and Software Experience: Who Thinks Smarter?

Both brands have gone all-in on user-aware functionality.

Appleโ€™s โ€œApple Intelligenceโ€ reads like a privacy-first personal assistant that remembers context, rewrites emails, summarises alerts, and answers naturally via a smarter Siri. Most of it works on-device or through secure Private Cloud Compute.

Samsung answers with Galaxy AI and One UI 7 running on Android 15. It’s a bit louder, more experimental, like Gemini Live, which lets you share your screen in real time during chats. Contextual automation adapts to your daily patterns.

Whoโ€™s smarter? Depends. Apple is intuitive, private, and clean. Samsung is versatile, social, and forward-thinking.

Battery and Charging: Endurance vs Ecosystem

iPhone 16 Pro Max comes with its biggest battery yet, finely optimised through iOS 18. No exact numbers, but it comfortably outlasts most of the competition.

Samsungโ€™s 3,900mAh battery feels like a compromise for the thin design. It charges 55% in 30 minutes and supports wireless options, including PowerShare. Practical.

Verdict: Depends on your usage and battery protection.

Price and Availability

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: Starts at $1,199 (โ‚ฆ1.9m)
  • Samsung S25 Edge: Starts at $1,099 (โ‚ฆ1.7m)

Bearing in mind that rates fluctuate.

Which Should You Buy?

  • Choose iPhone 16 Pro Max if you want the absolute best in performance, professional-grade camera finesse, and a deeply integrated software-hardware ecosystem. Youโ€™ll feel its weight, but also its worth.
  • Choose Samsung S25 Edge if you prefer an ultra-portable design, cutting-edge photography tech, and a more open, adaptable software experience. Itโ€™s modern, awesome, and ready to evolve.

Me? Iโ€™d take the iPhone for the discipline, the Samsung for the charm, and probably wish I could merge the two. But alas, the life of smartphones still comes in separate boxes.
