Meta has announced the global rollout of a new generative AI video editing feature, now available in Nigeria, Ghana, and more than a dozen countries around the world.
The innovative tool allows users to reimagine and transform their short-form videos with more than 50 preset editing prompts and is accessible via the Meta AI app, the Meta.AI website, and the Edits app.
Meta says this is the first step in a journey to bring generative AI video editing across its family of apps and platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, enabling users to create high-quality, personalised video content with ease.
AI Video Editing for Everyone
Designed with accessibility and creativity in mind, the new video editing feature lets anyone experiment with cinematic visuals, regardless of editing experience.
Users can upload a video and select from a wide variety of pre-configured AI prompts to edit a 10-second segment. For a limited time, these edits are free.
Among the prompts are options that allow users to:
- Transform the setting or lighting of their clip (e.g., add dreamy sparkles or pearlescent effects)
- Reimagine themselves in a vintage comic book illustration or graphic novel
- Turn the video into a stylised video game scene, complete with fluorescent lighting and combat attire
Once edits are applied, videos can be shared directly to Facebook and Instagram from the Edits app and Meta AI app. Alternatively, edited clips can be posted to the Discover feed on the Meta AI app and Meta.AI website.
“We built this feature so that everyone can experiment creatively and make fun, interesting videos to share with their friends, family, and followers,” Meta said. “Whether you’re reimagining a favourite family memory or finding new ways to entertain your audience, our video editing feature can help.”
Meta also revealed that the prompts were developed with input from creators to ensure they appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Integration into the Edits app means creators can seamlessly incorporate these tools into their regular content production workflows.
A Milestone in Meta’s AI Media Generation Journey
The rollout builds on Meta’s ongoing investment in AI media generation research. The newly launched editing tool is inspired by Meta’s Movie Gen models, which allow for text-based video editing and generation. Movie Gen itself was developed by combining multiple foundational efforts in AI research.
In 2022, Meta debuted its Make-A-Scene models, which enabled the creation of image, audio, video, and 3D animations from scene descriptions. This work laid the foundation for Llama Image, a suite of diffusion-based foundation models capable of generating high-quality visual content and facilitating instruction-based media edits.
By 2023, Meta had fused these features into the Movie Gen model, which can generate and edit videos and sounds using simple text inputs. The current video editing tool represents the first public-facing application of this research.
“Today’s launch is a result of our continued effort to push AI video generation forward by conducting and sharing essential AI research,” the company stated.
Later this year, Meta plans to expand the capabilities of the editing feature to include freeform text prompts, enabling users to describe exactly what they want their video to look like. This next iteration will bring even more personalised and dynamic editing experiences to users and content creators alike.
For those interested in experiencing the new feature, it is available now on:
- Meta AI app (iOS and Android)
- Meta.AI website
- Edits app
