Samsung Electronics has cut jobs across its US consumer electronics operations after moving its headquarters from New Jersey to Texas, affecting hundreds of employees in both states.
The company confirmed that 739 roles at Samsung Electronics America’s (SEA) office in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, were affected by the relocation.
Some employees received offers to move to Texas, while others lost their jobs.
The cuts also affected Samsung’s Plano, Texas office, where about 100 workers, including employees in the mobile division, were laid off, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Samsung said the headquarters move could lead to changes in its workforce structure as it aligns operations with business priorities.
“The shift of SEA’s headquarters may lead to changes in our workforce structure, such as employees who are unable to relocate, or certain functions that are optimised to ensure our roles align to key business priorities,” Samsung said.
The relocation comes less than a year after Samsung opened new offices in Englewood Cliffs. The New Jersey facility had been expanded with support from local officials, and the company employed about 1,200 workers in the state.
Documents reviewed showed that Samsung Electronics America notified some employees on June 30 about an “enterprise-wide reduction-in-force” and said there were a “significant number of impacts”.
The company has not disclosed the total number of job losses across its US consumer electronics business.
Several affected employees have also shared updates on LinkedIn, showing departures from sales, marketing and other roles in New Jersey, Texas and some other US locations.
The workforce cuts come as Samsung sees strong growth in its semiconductor business, driven by demand linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The company expects an increase in second-quarter profit from its chip division and has announced plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in new semiconductor facilities.
However, its consumer electronics businesses face tougher conditions.
Samsung’s mobile division is expected to record its first-ever loss as it competes with Apple and Chinese smartphone makers. The company’s television and home appliance businesses are also facing pressure from competitors such as TCL and Hisense.
The high cost of chips has added challenges to Samsung’s consumer products, increasing production expenses for smartphones, televisions and appliances.
The company’s move follows a similar development among technology companies, with firms including Microsoft, Amazon and Meta reducing some roles while increasing spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Texas has become a preferred location for several large technology companies because of its business environment and lower taxes. Samsung already operates semiconductor facilities in the state and has a mobile operations hub in Plano.
Some Samsung employees have said that the latest cuts could lead to further changes across the company’s appliance, home entertainment and mobile divisions as Samsung increases investment in chips.
Samsung, however, said there was no broad global restructuring programme underway across its consumer products business.
The company said bringing more teams together in Texas would improve collaboration and support its work within the technology and AI ecosystem.
Samsung Electronics had 11,770 employees in the United States at the end of 2025, including workers in its semiconductor division.
Separately, Samsung SDS America, the company’s IT services unit, has notified authorities about possible cuts affecting 179 roles at its Ridgefield Park, New Jersey office.
Samsung said those changes were linked to the relocation of Samsung SDS’ North American headquarters and were separate from layoffs or restructuring.
