Why Many Free Tech Events In Lagos?
One might be wondering, why are there so many tech events in Lagos. But for those in the booming industry, be it ICT or Banking, it’s very clear why Lagos State remains the priority city for tech events.
One assertion that is not far from the truth is that -Lagos is a major economic center of Nigeria and the fifth largest economy in Africa if it were a country. With a population of over 20 million, the state houses headquarters of most conglomerates and tech companies in Nigeria.
Certainly, no week passes by without any technology event being held in Lagos. Many industry players and investors will always identify Lagos as the ideal city where technology events can be held.
“Lagos remains in the tech global market and in the map of the global space as a destination of choice where investors, tech experts see as a place to be… It is the heartbeat and commercial nerve center of the country, therefore, we will continue to support investors and create an enabling environment for their businesses to flourish”, Governor Sanwo-Olu said during the launch of MDXI’s new Data Center by Mainone.
Lagos has been the home of many startups that have grown to become unicorns. The successes of Paystack, Flutterwave, and Interswitch are all evident to both investors and the tech world at large. This feat is not only identified with the technology industry alone. There are sectors of the economy that are also undergoing such growth, with many events going on in Lagos.
Many have described Lagos to be the Silicon Valley of Africa. Multinationals like Google, Microsoft, IBM, and the rest have strong footprints in Lagos. Even startups are finding their way to Lagos, organizing free tech events. These free tech events in Lagos are avenues for them to tell their stories and attract both local and foreign investors.
In 2019, Nigerian startups were backed by more than $600 million in venture capital funding. Africa, as a whole, received an inflow of over $1 billion in the same year, the first time the continent’s startups crossed the threshold.
