The African Development Bank (AfDB), in partnership with the Islamic Development Bank, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the Abia state government, has launched a $263.8 million infrastructure development project.
Designed to modernise urban infrastructure, the project seeks to improve transportation and promote inclusive growth in Abia State over the next five years.
According to a statement from the AfDB on Wednesday, the bank will contribute $115 million to the initiative, comprising $100 million from its ADB window and an additional $15 million from the Canada-AfDB Climate Fund (CACF).
The Islamic Development Bank will provide $125 million, and the Federal Government of Nigeria is contributing $23.8 million.
Speaking during the launch, Dr. Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, highlighted the significant development the initiative will bring to the state.
He said:
“The fruits of development are richer when supported by partners who believe in your vision. We are focused on raising living standards, expanding access to education and healthcare, and driving economic productivity. Investor confidence is growing, public optimism is rising, and Abia is emerging as a destination of choice for opportunity and impact.”
The project is expected to rehabilitate over 248 kilometres of roads in Umuahia and Aba, restore two erosion sites, and create over 3,000 temporary jobs during the construction, with around 1,000 permanent jobs expected upon completion.
Dr. Abdul Kamara, director-general of AfDB’s Nigeria Country Development, noted the long-term impact of the project.
He said the goal is saving lives, reducing travel time, increasing income, and enhancing access to education and hospitals while supporting entrepreneurship development.
Dr. Akande Oyebola, assistant director at the International Economic Relations Department of the Federal Ministry of Finance, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to driving economic growth and improving the standard of living of people in Abia State.
